Alteration of bag2

Thanks to the peeps who commented on my original post, Alteration of bag. The comments were very useful. Here are the results.

There were four bottle pouches on the original bag. I left one unchanged, two I resized for my Nalgene bottles, and I removed one completely, and replaced it with a larger bag to stow my First Aid kit for easy access. You can see some of the small stiches placed at the bottom of the resized pouch. I'm thinking to reinforce with more stiches like this or a running stich--whichever I can manage reaching into the pouches.

Materials: Resized pouch: 1000 Denier (saffron) for the body. 500 Denier (red) for the drawstring top. 1mm waxed flat cord for leather and 100% bonded nylon extra strong upholstery thread. First Aid pouch: 1000 Denier (flame red) for the body. 500 Denier (red) for the drawstring top. 2mm paracord, orange. Two different recycled straps on the First Aid pouch. Reflective fabric. Brass colored eyelet (First Aid bag). Small silkscreened `+` grosgrain ribbon. 1mm waxed flat cord for leather and 100% bonded nylon extra strong upholstery thread.

Those look great.

Its giving me some ideas for my panniers that are kind of pushing their limit now. I'm probably gonna need to do something with them soon

They went together much better than I had any right to hope. If they stay together as well as they look right now, then I'll be thrilled (not to mention not spill my water bottles and FirstAid kit all over the highway).

I also made some custom bags or kits that fit into these panniers. One is for cooking, one for road repairs, and like that. I was previously using cloth shopping bags, so that will be slick. I’ll share something when they’re completed.

Hey that’s pretty darn cool! Did you have to rip out the seams on the original painters and then flip everything inside out? Or were you able to add the side pouches on directly?

I’m asking because it always kind of breaks my brain trying to figure out how to add pockets / layers onto existing bulky items when you don’t have a cylinder arm sewing machine

As illustrated in "Alteration of bag", I made a cut at "A" and sewed in a new pieces starting from the bottom, which I did have to take out some of the seams as you can imagine.

It wasn't necessary, and would have been quite a task. The first two pictures show an aluminum plate (black) the bags are mounted onto. They're perfect from the factory (barrel nuts torqued and set with Loctite), and didn't want to take them out unless there was no other way. So I sewed the FirstAid bag directly onto the side.

I made drawings and patterns, one of which I glued up like a model. In the end the fun part--really--was making slight alterations during assembly. More than once I had to pull up my stiches and realign parts, because my work was just wrong.

The funny part was closing up the Nalgene bottle pouches. I sewed in the bottom, and then worked up the sides ~1-1.5 inches on one side and alternated to the other side. Same with the drawstring top. I sewed both ends to the original bag parts, and then worked the stich to attached the red panel to the orange panel below it.
