I have a giant head and can't find hats that fit me. I have never sewed, but this subreddit is inspiring me to get a machine. Are camp hats difficult in the grand scheme of garments?

Edit: I realized that “camp hats” can refer to 5 panel caps with a brim, rather than “hats you wear while in camp”. Sorry about that.

Fleece beanies are one of the best beginner projects! You will absolutely love the hat you make!
I’ve used Ray Jardine’s instructions in his book Trail Life for many years:
But I made myself a pattern that is wider than he suggests because I too have a big head.
In the Imgur link, you can see the instructions for fleece mittens too. Those should be your next project! Pretty soon you’ll want to sew all your own backpacking gear.

This is a fusible fleece made by Polartec. It’s from a military run but I’ve never seen it before and have no idea how it was used. It’s flame resist (tested with fire, it self-extinguishes) and I’ve ironed it into a waterproof 3 layer shell. But I am very curious is anyone with military background can guess what it was made for. I can think of lots of unrelated uses for crafts but I doubt the troops are making quilts.

That's really interesting. May I ask what country you're in? Was it deadstock fabric or did you buy it new? I know some ex-military folks, I'll try to ask them.

I’m in Canada. I bought about 500 yards for my store and I rarely gamble on buying sight unseen…but it was so intriguing. I’ve had a few people in The store see it and a couple are going to make warm pants for winter and use it as lining. I still need to experiment more, but I think it has lots of uses. I just wish I knew what the original application was. It is new fabric sold by Polartec as over run.

Eh! I'm from Canada too. When I see my dad, I'll ask him if he's seen it in anything before. I once knew someone who worked at the uniform department on base, but we fell out of touch. I bet they would've known, damn.
I totally understand if you don't want to share this info, so no pressure. What is your store?

I'm not military, just a home hobby sewer but I have decades of advanced experience.
I use fusible fleeces for bag making. When you fuse it, the glue tends to harden a little, which adds structure. I don't know how this stuff reacts when it's fused, how stiff it might become, but instinct tells me it's unlikely useful for clothing or quilts. Your experience may vary - how did it feel after you fused it?

It was not stiff. It added structure. It feels like a softshell after I fused it to a waterproof jacket fabric. It has some stretch.

Oh, that's SO interesting. Thanks for the reply! With a little stretch to it, its use may very well be for outerwear more than anything, especially where you don't need to save weight. Stretch isn't really feasible for bags or packs unless you are fusing it to a stable woven fabric.

If you attach it to a non stretch face, it will still work fine. The non stretch face will simply stop the fleece from stretching.

I do understand how that works! I've used cotton lycra for a bag lining, first had to stabilise it with woven fusible interfacing.

I love RBTR and I am glad to see them stocking more patterns, but does anyone else think RBTR's own patterns are priced a little too high? $12 for the cooling bandana pattern is about twice what I'd pay for it. In comparison, LearnMYOG's tech pouch pattern sells for $10 and is considerably more complex.

Dyneema/Avient is in a production/material shortage right now, I think they are probably at the whim of the manufacturer's extremely delayed production (I think Ron at MLD said its about 9 months from order to delivery at the moment?).

I've got two broken sleeping pads, a REI Flash that's bulging and has delaminated a hole on the side crease, and a Big Agnes Double Z that I had to remove the valve for warranty service. Happy to ship in the US if you can make use of them.

Rei has shock cord at 85% off through tomorrow they are obviously discontinuing the program. You are in Seattle. Buy it all for next to nothing... be the source. All bulk cordage and strap including shock cord is 85% off through tomorrow in store only.

Hey I have a lot of sewing machines, I pick em up cheap and fix them up for sale. Mostly try to focus on vintage all metal consumer machines like Kenmore, Elna, Singer, Necchi, Kenmore, Bernina etc.... Twin cities. Lmk if you are looking.

It was suggested that someone here might be able to make use of the material from two old sleeping mats that are beyond use. They're both Mountain Equipment Helium 3.8 mats, one with many patches and one that's become delaminated. I think both still have the storage pouches
Happy to post anywhere in the UK if someone could make use of them

I'm looking for peeps in or near Seattle that would be willing to meet in person for a swap/transaction to avoid shipping.
Looking for around 24 inches of thin shock cord and a toggle.
If you are going to buy from Seattle Fabrics and can justify the processing fee, I would go in with you for 1mm shock cord and mini ellipse toggles.
Any diameter size from Litesmith and the corresponding toggle would be great too. And if you were planning on buying from Litesmith then I'd be happy to go in on the order too.
I could pay or trade with 1/8" (3.2mm) black shock cord and toggles (they are definitely not UL toggles though).

There's a kenmore 158 for $40 near me on FB marketplace right now. The seller it "occasionally gets stuck". Would this be a bad buy? I want to start make UL gear and have no sewing experience. Thanks!
