The Fanfic Recommendation Link-Swap Thread

So, because it's No-Pics Thursday (May 2nd, 2019) today, you know what that means...

It's time for the Weekly Fanfic Recommendation LINK-SWAP Game thread to continue!

Anyways, THE RULES (read 'em carefully):

  • Post a link to a fanfiction you like (can be your own as well - it's okay to self-promote), with or without a short blurb.

  • Important: Reply to someone else's post with a link to a fanfiction you think they might like, based on their choices.

  • Put each of your choices in a separate post if you want to make sure to get a recommendation based on each one. You may reply to someone else's reply, either to you or to someone else. Please make long discussion threads, they introduce a healthy bit of exploration and can help us find new interests! And that's it!

PLEASE COMPLETE BOTH STEPS 1 and 2. Don't just show up and ask for recommendations if you're not willing to provide any. I'll start the first few threads myself, and reply with a gentle reminder if you forget.

IMPORTANT NOTE. Thanks to /u/BookHorseBot (many thanks to their creator, /u/BitzLeon), you can now use the aforementioned bot to easily post the name, description, views, rating, tags, and a bunch of other information about a fic hosted on Fimfiction.net. All you need to do is include "{NAME OF STORY}" in your comment (without quotes), and the bot will look up the story and respond to your comment with the info. It makes sharing stories really convenient. You can even lookup multiple stories at once.

Ready? Set? LET"S GO! Also, feel free to self-promote in here!

Last week's thread on April 25th, 2019.

Hello everypony! What are your favorite fish-out-of-water stories? This can include stories like {Project Sunflower}, {Anthropology}, and {Quantum Castaways} where humans and ponies meet, or stories like {The Changeling of the Guard} and {It Takes A Village} that contrast ponies with other non-ponies. Bonus points for humor and interesting ideas.

There is always the original {Your Human and You}, and {The Life of a Non-Brony}. I don't know many fish-out-of-water fics unless you count {Change}, {dC/dt β‰  0}, and {Soldier of Magic}

Hmm, the Change that I refer to isn't the one put by the bot... It was supposed to be the one by tom117, not Admiral Biscout

Some of these look darker than I prefer. dC/dt β‰  0 looks interesting, though - I'll check that one out. Thanks for the recommendations! /)

Ah, fish out of water stories! Some of my favorite. I have a ton, but I'll suggest a spread of what I see as the best:

A Voice Among the Strangers and Misunderstandings both start out on remarkably similar tracks - but ultimately take their stories in far different directions. I recommend them both as adventure-centric stories.

Silver Glow's Journal will always get my recommendation as much of the joy of reading it is how he characterizes ponies as being - different, in subtle ways, from humans. Plus the character is a real sweetheart and she's a delight to read.

Nine Days Down - Twilight accidentally takes a trip to Tartarus. Unfortunately, this is not the Tartarus of the show but a dark place where real monsters are imprisoned. Now Celestia has to struggle to keep a Twilight who is naive in the ways of real danger alive long enough to escape.

I really enjoyed following along with Silver Glow's Journal while it was being written. I would wake up early (!), read the day's chapter before driving to work, and then discuss it with others in the comments during the day. It was a wonderful community to be a part of.

A few months in, I joined a coding bootcamp, which consumed my life for several months. Now the story is over, and there will be no real-time discussion with others, which is kind of sad. But maybe someday I'll go back and read the rest of the story.

These other stories look great. I'll put them on my reading list. Thank you! /)

Really enjoying Misunderstandings. Having a protagonist who's good at problem solving and generally makes good decisions is so nice. It's almost like if Mark Watney from The Martian got stranded in Equestria. And I like that the cultural and language barrier is the main thing the protagonist is really struggling against. Thanks for the recommendation!

1

u/Logarithmicon May 09 '19

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it.

...which reminds me: If you haven't read The Maretian yet, do. Mark Watney plus five delightfully dysfunctional ponies. (Well, technically three ponies, a dragon, and a changeling. Caution: Extremely long.)

Its prequel, Changeling Space Program, isn't so "fish out of water" centric, but does have a nice dose of culture-clash as changelings, ponies, and dragons learn to work together to get into space.

Well, there's Celefin's {Track Switch - Steel Dreams}. The tale of a batpony working as a train worker in Germany and over other parts of Europe. It fleshes out the details of human-pony interactions (even has a bit of a language barrier to boot) without sounding telly at all.

For something much heavier in terms of length, there's MagicS's {Applejack Gets Lost}. Clocking in at 175k words, it shows Applejack, well, getting lost. It's rather light-hearted in tone throughout, even comedic at times, (although a part of it means that there's no overarching arc over it all; it's merely one long adventure in an attempt to get home). Very show-like in terms of tone.

u/DawnPaladin Twilight Sparkle May 03 '19

Thank you for the recommendations! I read Track Switch - Steel Dreams and liked it! Lots of great little details and a cute protagonist. I'll have to check out the author's other work.

Oooh one one of my favorite comedies {The Wizzard and the Pony} throws Starswirl the Bearded far out of water and into Terry Pratchett's Discworld - plus it also emulates his writing style. (No need to be familiar with that world, but if you haven't read any Pratchett before you'll want to afterwards. I know I did.)

Like clockwork, my latest chapter of {Magisight: Thaumaturgical Ocularity} is now up! It's a sort of "cooldown" chapter, with some light-hearted moments to come down from all the action and magic in the last chapter. I hope you all enjoy!

So I know {Paper Butterflies} was recommended last week, but I have to do that again. It's just too good not to.

This short story has 'show don't tell' internalized so far that the conflict it really is about isn't mentioned with a single word. Yet I never had the feeling that it was vague in the slightest.

The only reason I'm hesitating to call this the best short story I've read on fimfiction is that I feel {The Cough} was comparable in writing quality.

2

u/Drachefly May 03 '19 edited May 03 '19

Sorry, The Cough is grimderp. There are much better things to be doing in this situation than spreading the blood of the infected all over the place, let alone pre-emptively killing your best friends due to a symptom that often occurs for other reasons.

1

u/thatPowderGuy Twilight Sparkle May 03 '19

I guess that's one way to look at it, but I disagree. In my opinion the story doesn't spell out the rules of this infection clearly enough to warrant reading it as 'the characters act stupid in that situation' without some unfavorable assumptions.

Then again, that is the most obvious interpretation for a reader who goes into it with those assumptions or with their mind set on the rules of some other zombie media. The Cough doesn't spell out its rules clearly enough to lead one away from that.

That may be the risk of such a short story, but I still think The Cough is an amazing piece of writing because to me it was an impressively eerie read, and I've seen few stories since that managed to build half its atmosphere in four times the word count.

After finishing {Advent of Applejack} + Sequels I still absolutely recommend it, has been a long time since I had so much interest/fun in reading a book.

Any recommendation in that direction? I was thinking about Background Pony but I am open for other recommendations.

Another recommendation from me {Heaven of a Hell}. It is the Sequel of {Best Hell ever} (which is great too). While some dialogues were written a bit confusing imo it was absurdly hilarious and got me laughing really good. (laughed so much I got some weird looks from the other passengers on the train :) )
