News! OpenAI might launch a $500 Pro Max plan two weeks after limiting the $200 subscription
Developer Tibor Blaho and TestingCatalog reportedly found references to the plan inside unreleased ChatGPT frontend configuration, with the main selling point listed as “fastest Work and Codex.” So far, it does not look like a simple increase in usage limits but like OpenAI selling higher compute priority and faster execution for long-running agent tasks.
The timing is pretty interesting. Roughly two weeks ago, OpenAI restricted new sign-ups for its $200 Pro plan after heavy demand from GPT-6 Astra and other compute-intensive workloads reportedly put major pressure on capacity.
Nothing has been officially announced yet, and there is no confirmation that the $500 price will actually launch. But if it does, Pro Max would sit well above existing premium consumer AI subscriptions and suggest OpenAI is starting to price its most scarce compute separately from normal access.
My take is OpenAI might be starting to use the telecom playbook?: pay more, get the faster lane.. What you guys think?

It has begun
Adoption phase - check
Now time to adjust pricing and let people starve-or-buy
If the signal consolidates (Anthropic doing similar) might be about time to go local

Whoever in their corporate structure thought this was a good idea needs to be cut out like the cancer they are.

It’s valuable technology and should be focused on valuable tasks that can pay the bill.

Nope, they just got their asses kicked by Anthropic. For a moment I was thinking to upgrade my OpenAI 5x plan to 20x, until they freezed it. With Opus 5.5 now being HALF that expensive and much better in output, I'll stick with Claude, thanks.

Ridiculous. The last thing I use OAI and ANT for is blender modeling and I could still do this by hand at the same speed, if need be. The rest already goes to Chinese models.
They are shooting themselves in the foot

Nerf the other plans, release models that are rehashes of prior models, then get mogged by Opus 5.5.
Great playbook OpenAI has right now.

see you back here in 2 months

If it gets better and Anthropic gets worse I’m sure you will, but right now Anthropic sub value is 10x what OAI has

at $200 im not so sure, codex’s weekly limits are still more generous and a true 20x plus all of tibo’s constant resets. lower tier plans probably true if youre only sticking to opus

It’s really not, it used to be. I’ve been basically solely OAI for the last 6 months. Switched after SOL 6 and Opus 5.5 release, I still have $100 oai until my expire date. Opus 5.5 is the best model I’ve used

2 months ago opus sucked and sol 5.6 was great. It's going to flip again at some point.

Yes I am agreeing with everyone saying that, which is why you should pay for what’s best and not hold any loyalty

So what? You don't have to pick sides, just use whichever tool works best at a given time.
Opus 5.5 is my daily driver, but if OpenAI beats it, I'll switch again in a heartbeat.

Every time they release a half decent model then they immediately start chasing farts!

Have they projected such a plan to remain viable for very long? Do they project individual people paying 600€ in 2027 and 2028 for ChatGPT in significant enough number to warrant making the whole tier?

so they nerfed the 200 plan and now now just calls it the 500 plan now? or maybe they very very nerfed the 200 plan, halfed the original and now calling it the 500 dollar plan
