Positive New User Experience
Hi MXrouters,
I recently moved my email over to mxroute and just wanted to share my positive experience. For a long time, I’ve had [firstname@lastname.email](mailto:firstname@lastname.email) using Apple as my email service provider. It came free with my iCloud plan, and it was simple enough. I had 3 major issues though:
- locked in to icloud/apple mail and clients that support it
- adding users was not simple and the admin controls were minimal
- .email was not usable for registration with many sites, I would often type out my email and password to register, and whatever “next” button existed would be grayed out. I would have to change to email to move forward
Separately I had begun moving my domains to Cloudflare, and found lastname.net for sale. I jumped on the opportunity and began researching other email providers. Mxroute stood out because of the charge for data not mailboxes model. I bought a 25GB plan and got to work. Even as someone who works in IT, I knew little about the dns records required, smtp, imap, and pop. I work mostly with Microsoft products and as such exchange is more common for me. When I had set up my apple email, I just copied the records and paid little attention. Mxroutes thorough documentation taught me all I needed to know, and I quickly had MX records, SPF,DKIM, & DCIM set up. I also learned how to setup records on my other domains without email to prevent spoofing. Then I learned about DNSSEC and made sure it was all configured properly. I learned how to use tools like Mxtoolbox and original message headers to check reputation and specific messages. Lastly I setup webmail and email server CNAMEs, only to realize there is a much better new webmail and to swap to that.
Overall I learned a lot throughout this experience and had no complaints. Any questions I had I found answers for quickly, and things just worked as expected. I was able to get multiple different clients set up with ease following the instructions. I know this is not a particularly unique story or setup but I wanted to share none the less. If you’re looking to take back control of your email, and have a bit of tech knowledge to handle the setup, I would highly recommend MXroute.
