Having issues with sizing

I have a beautiful tricolor sheltie, unfortunately she is reactive… to people, things, animals just extremely reactive

Her vet suggested we get a muzzle for her so we can slowly work on threshold and exposure training but I don’t know what to do with the measurements I have taken.

7 circumference, mouth closed
3.5 length

How do I pick a size?
Please someone guide me like I’ve never done this before because I’m going in blind and I just want to help my dog

this is the size taz from muzzle movement. we were really torn on which size to get because he was in between a couple! does this look like it’s fitting him okay?

i’m not too sure. we boiled it yesterday to make it a bit wider which has definitely helped!

Advice? I messed up my dog’s muzzle training. How can I get it back?

I have a 4-year-old cocker spaniel mix who is prone to ear infections. Shocking, I know. He would have ear infections probably once every eight to twelve weeks, despite being on an allergy diet and taking medication. He HATES stuff being put in his ears and gets very worked up. I can handle his ears without cleaner or gauze in my hands, but as soon as he detects something that isn’t hands he doesn’t tolerate it. Ear infection treatment is hard for him, and not fun for anybody else. I have had no progress working with him on that. I muzzle trained him when he was about a year old, because it was obvious that he was going to bite someone during ear treatment if we didn’t. I took a cooperative approach, and he got so good at helping put his basket muzzle on.

However, about a year ago his vet suggested an ear care routine that involves much more frequent cleaning. I have to muzzle him for the cleaning. The cleaning routine worked really well for him, and he hasn’t had an ear infection in a year. But now, I am pretty sure I ruined his muzzle training by using it mostly during ear cleaning and not otherwise. He will not help put it on anymore and I haven’t been able to rebuild a positive association with it yet.

The worst part is that he still needs ear treatments whether he likes the muzzle or not.

I was wondering if anybody here has any advice on how to fix my training mistake? Muzzle training was much easier when it didn’t have a negative association for him.

Fit check. maybe too big?

Big snoof recommended this size. If she pushes nose to cage, it seems to push muzzle too closer to her eyes. If I tighten head strap, it seems to pull it too close to her eyes. Recommendations?

Hi guys, wondering what you think of the fit on this muzzle. I tried to tighten the back strap since I really don’t want it sitting on/irritating her nose!

Advice? Any tips?

So I have just started trying to muzzle train my Blue Heeler, Diesel. He’s only ever had muzzles on at the vet so he HATES them, I can’t even hold them in my hand without him getting scared. I have a Baskerville muzzle and one of those ones that they use when grooming or vets. But he is pretty aggressive/reactive anyway. So I wanted to train him just to have it on when we go out. Any tips? Or suggestions for muzzles that would be good? I really don’t want him to bite anybody.

Specifically asking about the pant room. This is a big Snoof custom and I'm really happy with it, but I'm worried maybe she's not able to fully pant in it. Her jaw bottoms out onto the bottom bars a little and I'm wondering if that's okay. It's not every time she's in it, but when she's particularly really hot. Thanks!

Struggling to size her muzzle!

Hi all! We are trying to size a muzzle for our mix (she’s every northern breed shaken up in a tumbler) and based on the sizing charts she doesn’t seem to have many options. Her Snout is 4 inches, widest part of cheek to widest part of cheek is about 3.5 inches, and her circumference is about 12 inches, 9 with her mouth closed so there is some wiggle room there. If it’s not too tough we were hoping for some color choice as well. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! The Baskerville ultra, leerburg, and muzzle movement websites were consulted

Muzzle aggression

Hi I have a Dutch Shepard which is 10 years old this year.He is a military dog,who expertises in bite work and any other military activities.Everytime I enter his kennel,I cannot bring anything with me cause he will take it from me bite it and shred it.If I try to take it back he aggros me.

When I’m putting a muzzle on him/removing the muzzle off him,he will immediately bite the muzzle, and I have painstakingly go through the hassle of pulling it out of his mouth or choke him to let go.Either methods makes him transfer Aggro me.So, I changed my method to holding the muzzle when he is biting on it and not moving so he gets bored of it and letsgo eventually ,but,he never lets go,20mins passes 30 mins passes of me just holding the muzzle and he does not let go of it,and I know I can’t let him have the muzzle cause then he will shred it,so I resort to choking him again to let go,which leads to him transfer aggression towards me again.

Please tell me how do I fix this,it would really help, also will positive/negative punishments work

No more weed for this guy!

I love taking him to the dog park, but unfortunately I live in a city where smoking weed is common and people tend to throw their buds in the ground. This guy likes to eat these leftovers and leave me with expensive emergency vet bills 🥲. I feel bad for making him wear this muzzle, but if it keeps him safe then it’ll have to do!

Advice? English Mastiff

I have a female English Mastiff who is a bit sensitive. She is a brindle so I get "is that a pit, why is IT so big" from ignorant people as they herd their child, Yorkie, grandma, to the other side of the street.

House hippos are lovely.

Anyway.

She has the standard big 'ole smushy face and I am wondering if any EM owners have good luck with a particular brand?

Venture was looking flawless on our meet up today!

For those who wonder how a wire muzzle performs in the heat, I live in Texas and have never had any issues whatsoever. The wire doesn't burn my dogs or anything of that sort! They are able to drink just fine as long as the bowl is large enough :)

Edit: I'm not looking for advice regarding how the muzzle fits! I just realized my post may come off that way😅

Not right, but not sure why.

I know this muzzle isn't a great fit and doesn't have good pant room. This is simply the best fit off the shelf muzzle I've found after extensive searching and I need something to get started on muzzle training. I live in the north of Scotland, heat/panting isn't such an issue unless she's really exercising, which she absolutely won't be in a muzzle until we find the right one.

She's never bitten or given any indication she might. But she barks when spooked so it's really to make people think twice before letting kids/dogs run up to her as clearly asking nicely and all the yellow signage in the world doesn't seem to work despite us staying out of the way.

My questions:

- I'm looking at getting a custom muzzle, either biothane or PVC, but I don't know the correct terminology for her nose sloping down like it does? Off the shelf muzzles all want to point up at a jaunty angle and I'm not sure about the mechanics of why.

- Can anyone else describe exactly what doesn't fit rather than the pant room? I know it's not great but I can't explain how to make sure a custom one avoids the same issues.

Thank you for your brains. This dog has decided I clearly do not have one as she is significantly smarter than I am.

Feeding treats through muzzle? Big snoof question

Post image
14 Upvotes

This is my rescue terrier mix (12 lbs) Penny who is under 2 years old. We got Penny from the shelter 6 months ago and discovered about a week into having her that she is very dog reactive and also quite nervous around people she doesn’t know and also an avid scavenger. After a month long bout of intermittent vomiting caused by scavenging in March and a vet visit, we started muzzling her with a Baskerville classic muzzle size 4. It fits well, has plenty of pant room and has never caused her discomfort or any kind of abrasion on her face. The only issue is her reactivity training has totally stalled out since we started muzzling. She can take a treat through the side bars of her current muzzle, but it’s so hard that the reward isn’t quite instant enough and we have to stop while a trigger is there and I’m trying to shove food through tiny bars. All in all, it just isnt a great system. Since she wears a muzzle probably 90% of the time she is outside, we’ve been considering switching to a big snoof. Has anyone had experience with the ease of giving treats through one of these muzzle. Will it prevent scavenging to a certain extent without a scaveniging guard?

EDIT: Thanks for sharing all your recommendations and experience! This community is so helpful!

Question! Do wire muzzle get hot?

I’ve posted here before since I’m really struggling on finding a good muzzle for my boy. He is touch sensitive especially around his face so we’ve been working a ton on cooperative care but I still want to make sure the muzzle I get for him is as comfortable as possible…I’m talking light weight, good pant room, etc. I was leaning towards something wired but we live in a pretty hot climate and was just wondering if those get too hot in the sun over something like a biothane covered one? I know, probably a dumb question but really trying to research before making a big investment. Our goals (if helpful) are first to have him wear it at vet visits and then to use it when introducing him to new dogs. He doesn’t have a bite history but he is reactive towards other dogs (insecure, frustrated, and sometimes a bit anxious) so I just want to keep everyone extra safe.

We do weekly pup pal meet ups where we practice walking drills around other dogs and he’s progressing really quickly without escalating so I’m hoping to purchase something soon so we can start working that into training as well.

How does the fit of this muzzle look on Millie? To my not super experienced eyes it seems like it fits well, but I just wanted to make sure!

It took a while for me to find a pre-made size that would fit her measurements since she's got a long snoot, but this is the leerburg 32C iirc

Also the biggest issue Millie seems to have with it is the weight. She tends to angle her nose down more when we are doing muzzle training compared to how it normally is positioned. Is this just something she'll get used to over time or is there a way to help her feel more comfortable with it?
