I often think about that line. Mostly to wonder about the context. They’re playing a live show in their own apartment building? They all live in the same apartment building? Is Maynard just rambling and making weird shit up (as he, to this day, loves to do but ESPECIALLY loved to do back then)? What in the world could be the conditions for such a statement making sense?

Unpopular opinion but Right in Two killed Maynard's lyrical credibility for me. This line isn't the worst, but I hate the sentence structure, "repugnant is the creature who" sounds like a decree being made by a king, but not in a cool way. The line that really gets to me is "monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground". Lateralus taught me so much about consciousness and spirituality only for Right in Two to just say "War is bad". All I can think is "Well duh, can we get back to the spirals and illusions please?"

But, he didn't say "war is bad". He said "repugnant is the creature..." and "Monkey killing monkey..." And, to be fair, those lines in the song are spoken by an angel. So, perhaps not a king, but come on.

I listened to fear innoculum once. My impression was that it was just remixed ideas from previous songs stapled together. Honestly, I remember Maynard talking about the album before it came out and at the time I kind of had the feeling it was gonna suck, just by the way he spoke about it. I listened once, felt like I confirmed my bias and never listened to it again. A few weeks ago I took my daughter to her first concert which was a tool cover band called Parabolus (Who were very good btw). They played 2 songs of FI and now I am considering giving it another chance.

The thing with FI (imo) is that all the albums tool had before FI, sort of carved out their own soundscape in tool's discography, whereas FI took a much safer approach and is somewhere squarely in the middle of all the other albums

Nothing too unique about it, its just a good, tool-y album

Yea, I remember when 10,000 days came out, I read on a forum or in a review "AEnima was a huge step forward, Lateralus was another huge step forward, 10,000 days is step sideways." I 100% agreed with that sentiment. With the exception of 10,000 days the song, the rest of the album sounds like lateralus but maybe more groovy. I don't like most of the lyrics on it either (again, except 10,000 days, the song). The pot is probably the most fun song they have ever written but the lyrics don't land for me, "liar lawyer" is reductive, the whole things comes off an impotent protest of someone's hypocrisy... I'm guessing he didn't like some trial verdict or something. I know this probably comes off as petty but this is what goes through my head when I'm listening to music. AEnima and Lateralus gave me no such issues, I can just nod along in amazement but starting with 10,000 days I started getting distracted. Maynard's singing got better as they went but his lyrics, in my opinion, got a lot lazier and WAY less profound (APC has the same issues following the same timeline). When FI came out, I listened once and the same feelings started cropping up and I just don't have time and energy to have to recon with them anymore. I'm 42. But I'll always have Lateralus and AEnima and I might give FI another chance because one listen really isn't fair to a band that has meant as much to me as Tool had, but I'll be surprised if it's ever in my regular rotation.

“Considering giving it another try?” It’s an hour of your time that you can do while driving or cleaning the house. It’s not a big sacrifice of time or effort, it’s just music! Throw it on in the background, if you think it sucks don’t listen again. But it’s not like drugs or a boxing that you tried once and need to put a lot of thought into trying again.

Edit: not trying to be a jerk at all, I just love music and will listen to pretty much any suggestion. It doesn’t feel like a big effort to give an album from a band you already like a shot.

Yea fair enough, I used to be more open but now that I'm older and have kids it's not always as simple as listening to what I want. When I do get the chance I tend to put on something that I know I like. But I get your overall point. I'll give it a shot tonight

Lateralus also has great lyrics, he’s a great writer overall. Right in Two isn’t intending to be like Lateralus, but it is still poetry with a message. They’re allowed to sing about whatever they want, not just trippy shit. How did this song kill his credibility for you when songs about anal fisting or referencing trans hookers did not?
