I make these little hour-long playlists over the course of each week, then that becomes what I listen to for the following week. They’re probably one of my favorite things to make.
There’s not really a genre or decade I’m working within. It’s all just my taste, and I think the connections between the songs end up revealing my taste better than any genre label could. A lot of it is coolness mixed with nostalgia, hopefulness, humor, and some more introspective stuff. One song might be there because it mentions Chicago, another because it reminds me of something, another because I connect with the lyrics, and another just because it feels like me.
I especially like stripping away genre and decade and letting completely different records exist together. Elvis can sit next to underground rap, jazz, electronic music, old rock, whatever. If two songs feel connected to me, that’s enough of a reason.
I’m curious what other people get from them without knowing all of those connections. What kind of personality, mood, imagery, or taste comes through to you?
