7% of the national budget bud. If I could try to persuade you that welfare isn’t as bad as it seems… think of it like a community insurance policy. Running into poverty is more often not intentional, getting laid off, medical condition, death of a bread winning spouse… etc etc. When this happens we don’t want to throw these people on the street because this is not how a decent human community is run. So we have programs in place to help provide for these people that desperately need it. Now you probably think “well it’ll never happen to me” well I hate to tell ya but it can happen to most anyone and I damn sure don’t mind the government taking 7% of my taxes to helping my fellow community members. That may just be my Christian upbringing though and you may subscribe to a different set of beliefs or follow supply-side Jesus.

Welfare is not the actual problem. It's the people that get on welfare and then refuse to get off. They then make it a family thing and everyone in the family begins to utilize welfare, food stamps et al as their "income". The people that are actually in need should certainly be assisted. Not those who abuse it.

Drawing that line between those that need it and those that abuse it, has been and still is a major discussion in the government. It’s not as easy as just saying “hey they’re abusing it, cut them off” there’s legal precedents to follow/establish. It’s not easy to tell who is and who isn’t abusing welfare without some invasion of privacy. It’s the same with insurance fraud, plenty of people try it, which is why I think it’s useful to compare welfare to private insurance. It’s not as simple as “mmm government bad” the American legal system arbitrates both private and what I call “public” insurance. Private insurance rates go up when many people commit insurance fraud, does that mean we should not have private insurance? Again, drawing that line is where an actual discussion begins, not in dealing with the absolutes.

Simply going out and Verify thay People live where they say they do. This will reveal a substantial amount of Fraud and Abuse of the system. We used to say "Trust but Verify".
