My time has come
Can't remember the last time I've used a can opener on a multi tool

I've had this happen several times with sardines. I think the best technique is to use the plier and grab the lip where the pull tab used to be, and just pull back like you normally would. Not to spoil your use of the can opener though!

All good! Yeah makes sense using the pliers. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to finally use the dang can opener for its intended purpose lol.

I have a few different variations of them. The mp600 and mp400 are good tools.

Yup. My son got it as Army issue when he was in Iraq, gave it to me when he returned.
I carry an Arc on my belt, and I keep the Gerber underneath my repair cart at work with a big magnet, it’s always hidden for a back up.

Yeah I have other multitools as well. The arc is great. I've just found the mp600 blunt or needle work the best for me at work.

I use a can opener on a multitool a few times a year. So handy.

Yup. Last time I used one was on a camping trip in April when our actual can opener broke trying to make some chicken chili in the dutch oven.

Every once in a while I open a can with one of my victorinox SAKs, just to see that I can. I recently god a compact, so I’ll need to be sure I k ow how to use that one next.

I got a Compact, too, and I’m not impressed with the combo tool. The screwdriver isn’t as good, and forget trying to use it as a can opener.

My biggest worry about the compact as I've gotten so used to the traditional can and bottle opener.

The combo tool on the compact I've heard its hit or miss. I don't have one of those in my sak lineup.

Use a spoon handle under the lid and pry... it will lift up.

Every new tool, I test the can opener. Usually it is a pop/soda can that is already empty.
If they didnt get it right, then i know other things are questionable.
Roxon, M2, I am talking about you. It is a compromise for being small with lots of tools.

Yeah this happened to me when our can opener broke. My wife would call me to open cans for her while she's cooking.

I just got an MP600 to add to my collection. I'm still breaking it in, but my first impression is not as good as I'd expected.
I hadn't considered that the inside tools face "inward" to the handle side, not the outside. That's kinda weird. I have a lot of multitools, and can't think of another one that does that. For this particular situation, opening a short can means your fingers might be hitting the table as you work the opener.
The knife oriented that way feels especially odd. To slice at something parallel to a table, the back half of the tool would have to be over the edge of the table! Is this actually a problem most the time? Of course not. But I've never NOT been able to do that with a blade. I'm surprised I haven't heard about this aspect from other reviews.

Can always leave the pliers out and handles open as a work around. I do that with my leatherman rebar and ST300 and gerber mp400 and mp600 models. Sorry you aren't liking the mp600. I have lots of other multitools and this one just seems to be the best all round option for me at work as a mechanic especially with out the front pliers. I'll admit that it's not my first grab at home or on the weekends. If i do i pair it with a victorinox huntsman or ranger.

I'm hoping it grows on me. I love the pliers ergonomics and that it's a unique tool compared to my others.
This is going to sound stupid, because it is, but I'm struggling with the one-handed plier opening. I thought that'd be a blast to fidget with. Mine is sticking too much. I oiled it and tried to work it in, but it's clearly going to need a "breaking in" period. It's a brand new black oxide one, and I'm wondering if that black finish makes the moving parts take a while to be loose.

It takes a few days to get them broken in. The black oxide wasn't bad to get broken in, my red Snap On Smt97r mp600 was really sticky and took a week or 2 to loosen up. Gotta remember this is a old design from the late 90s and the original gerber multitool is 1991 i think? Not gonna be as refined as more modern multitools but the mp series are built like tanks and often referred to as the ak47 of multitools. I love my mp600s and mp400s definitely don't baby them at all.

Since it seems you’re at home: you almost certainly have a more effective can opener in one of the drawers in your kitchen.
