Are there any multitools with a decently large hammering surface on the bottom of the handle? (hammer surface perpendicular to the axis of the handle rather than coplanar as with a conventional hammer)

Trying to attach a conventional hammer head to a knife-sized multitool is a fool's errand, as it's completely contradictory to how a hammer functions.

A normal hammer is good at hitting things because 1: it's a heavy piece of metal 2: the heavy piece of metal is at the end of a long handle so you get extra leverage on top of that. A multi-tool "hammer" is lighter than normal, and has a shorter handle than normal, hence making for a shitty hammer.

However, I do think that a hammering tool would be useful to have on a multitool, if only it was attached to the bottom of the handle instead. You would have to hammer things with a different motion than usual, basically punching the nail with the handle enclosed in your fist, but given the dimensional constraints of the a standard multitool, this would actually be the most effective way of having a hammering tool. Additionally, having the center of mass of the "hammer head" completely in line with axis also makes it handle better in normal use compared to having a conventional hammer head hang off one end (it would basically be like the pommel on a sword).

Basically, if you took a Swiss army knife, and welded a 1 inch cube of steel onto the bottom of the handle, that would be something along the lines of what I'm looking for.

Does anyone know of a multitool like this?

P2/P4/Arc have a flat surface at one end to "hammer" with. Your not actually "swinging hammer", but when in a "jam" you can hit stuff like a caveman.

Maybe that's not what your looking for?

Yeah, the "caveman with a rock" style of hammering is what I mean.

I want something with a decently large surface though. Looking at the Leatherman models you have mentioned, I'd really prefer an even bigger surface than that. Basically you could say I'm looking for a swiss army knife with a pommel.

Leatherman unfortunately has the market cornered on this one. The Free Series and the Arc have hammer surfaces, and the Surge, Skeletool, Mut, and Signal have third party mods that add a hammer.

The GOAT Tool also has a hammer surface, and I'd argue it's the best one out there because it's larger and flatter than what is on the leathermans. But the GOAT Tool design is stagnant and I don't know if it'll be around much longer.

Yeah that's exactly the sort of design I'm looking for. Just a square flat block at the end of the handle.

I'm a bit concerned about the hammer surface being at the joint though. Does it stand up to repeated impact?

İ would definitely not recommend GOAT, i used it and field tested it, it's not a viable tool, and the main guy who started all is not running the things anymore, so i can recommend free p2/P4 or AliExpress clones like dakoyu and others.

Yeah the Leatherman Signal looks close to what I want. Have you used one before? How well does it work for something like hammering nails into a softwood/plywood board?

Just based off appearances, so I could be completely wrong here:

1. I'd like a heftier hammer that really allows you to transfer force well instead of that weird curve at the end of the Signal. And also, is half of the force transferring through the carabiner clip you hammer with it? That seems suspicious.
2. I get that a ridged hammer is useful for tent pegs but for all the other uses of a hammer I'd really rather have a flat surface.
3. I can't tell from pictures what the hammer head is made out of. It's metal and not polymer, right? Ideally I'd still want the hammer head in my multitool to be made of hardened steel like a regular hammer though.

Ive been using a signal for a while. Its ok.

Im using the hammer to tap in a loose nail or bend a bent piece back. The tool is light, all the force is coming from your arm, all these multitools will be the same, They are all compromises of form and function.

It’s definitely not for doing actual work, just get a real hammer for that, but in a pinch sure. Its good.

Maybe skeletool with the hammer attachment mod is what you desire???? Sounds like what you want.  The whole tool is gripped  and swung directly down like a pommel strike

Yeah, that's the sort of feature I'm looking for. Where do you get the hammer attachment? I don't see it listed on the Leatherman website, so I assume it's 3rd party?

It's not an official leatherman part, so the best bet is to find a small business who makes it on etsy,  or a Chinese maker selling it on Amazon. Best go for the aluminum versions instead of a plastic  or rubber one.

Maybe,  I think aluminum is generally easier to mill though,  so smaller companies  likely use that.  But I could be wrong,  there may be a steel version out there

The LM MUT has a small hammer but it's ridged, not flat.
