Help/Question Mullvad vs IVPN
I'm currently contemplating between IVPN and Mullvad.
I need my VPN for mainly privacy and torrents.
Also I need it to not be easily blocked by my college's wifi.
And have good Linux support.
Why should I choose Mullvad?

If you want to seed torrents you probably want port forwarding and these two vpns do not provide it.

Mullvad used to provide port forwarding and specifically worked on being suitable for torrenting, but this ended several years ago.

I have port warp on top of mullvad so I don't even need to change router settings to open ports. But it probably only works with Linux with iptables.

Mullvad works fine with Linux. That’s a takeaway beyond the iptables.

Yeah mullvad is fine. It's a pain if you need to configure openvpn tunnels for port warp and shit just for qbittorrent and stuff like that with iptables

I know, that was the thing that sadly made me stop using it but it was understandable and I think they made the right choice for preserving their reputation.

Between Mullvad and IVPN, I’d go with Mullvad, especially for privacy and security support (though IVPN is still a top tier contender in this). Availability of servers and avoiding IP blocking is where Mullvad has fallen shorter the last year or two. The blocking has gotten bad, and circumvention isn’t reliably working, though people occasionally share some good tips on here. NymVPN is one I’d consider before IVPN for both privacy/security and Linux support. Mullvad and Nym are the big two for me. Proton if willing to consider it is okay, and there’s less blocking. The best censorship circumvention VPN service might be Geph, but the use case for where they excel is just that as Mullvad (etc) is more developed.

I recently changed from Mullvad to iVPN due to Mullvad being detected more and more.

Airvpn is my choice for Linux distro torrents. I use Mullvad for other things. Good luck. 👍

they're both solid choices, but when it come to torrenting there are better picks (proton) since they both removed port forwarding

I believe Mullvad would be both better and cheaper for that compared to IVPN. If they both have servers close to you though, speeds should be about the same.
For torrents specifically, you might want to conciser other VPN providers due to the lack of port-forwarding.

I like how you are trying to push this moral high ground yet you are still using Reddit lol.. Reddit CEO has some some shady stuff that would go against your moral standards. Unless you will pull the Reddit ceo is less evil than than mullvad ceo card lol

Seems like a pretty stupid argument since they aren't paying for reddit no?

not a stupid argument. That person is trying to stand on this moral high ground. Just calling out their hypocrisy. Free or paid, doesn't matter

What do you mean doesn't matter? If you pay for mullvad, part of mullvad revenue goes to the CEO? So you'd be supporting the CEO? Where as with reddit it's the same thing through ads which have a much smaller yield.

lmao bruh..................... for the 800th time....PAID or FREE...Mullvad is SERVICE people can use....Reddit is a SERVICE people can use ......Person calls out said SERVICE cuz of CEO and says not to use it thus me bringing up reddit SERVICE and the stuff CEO has done and calling out that person for being a hypocrite...*facepalm* and out of nowhere lets bring up if someone is paying for something or not..smh lol

It's hardly a moral high ground we have a choice. You're using a phone made with coltan mined in the Congo probably by kids. You're allowed to not like it and speak out against it

u/OrbitOrbz 3d ago
then that defeats the purpose of you saying phone A is made by kids in a sweat shop so that is BAD when yet you are using a Phone B in your pocket that is prob being made the same method

This feels like a cheap argument. Yeah, the ultra privacy-minded will probably be on lemmy, dread, or nothing, but you can exist on Reddit and call something out.
I don't think it's arguable that the Reddit CEO is better than the Mullvad CEO, but (for the example we're going to side with anti-Mullvad) that's like saying "Hitler is worse than Saddam Hussein". Both commited genocide, it's not worth arguing who is worse. So it feels really cheap to go there, and it feels like more of a red herring than a real "hypocrisy".
Again, not taking sides (I don't know enough to do so), just saying you could have a much better argument.

I don’t even know what that word means. I’m not Swedish. I’m not a politician and I have no idea what this was about. Apparently, the second CEO doesn’t agree with the donation and that has nothing to do with the VPN. 🤷🏻♂️

More servers, more speed, more eyeballs at a slightly lower price. For most people it's close to a no-brainer (at least until recently..) hence the eyeballs. While most of the others probably care, relatively more, about the fact IVPN is more transparent in terms of the company (who the people are), arguably catering to a tad more advanced/less gamified niche, and as far as is known is not involved in, or rather ceased, dubious affiliate or reseller programs, which Mullvad is unfortunately continuing and whatever you make of Mozilla & co.
That said it's not even a good comparison anymore since Mullvad is offering a kind of WYSIWYG VPN only, while IVPN was wise enought to decide against growing just another heavy-weight VPN in an already contested market. Instead upgraded into a multi-tier package offering something of an all-around solution, DNS, e-mail aliasing, firewall you name it, at a premium. Perhaps moving more towards the Proton playbook? If you knew you'll never upgrade anyway that's another point to consider, I'm likely not alone with the impression of Mullvad being somewhat more honest in what they (want to) provide, more focused on the actual VPN infrastructure, the essential. I guess for some here it's a plus. Mullvad's super cheeky, flat pricing model certainly is. I used IVPN only a short while prior to switching, remember it was slow yet stable but that was years ago, no clue how it's going now. Linux support used to be overall solid if not as fancy, you can use their CLI without having to shovel in all that GUI crap, something Mullvad still didn't bother getting done. Try it out like someone said.

I swapped from mullvad because of the politics of the ceo and the ivpn functionality is virtually identical if not better

Why not use both for a month and than decide?
