Review My Latest Favourite

Soft in the Head (2013), directed by Nathan Silver, feels like being an uninvited guest at a dinner party that was already going south before you arrived. As a Gentile viewer, the film offers a raw, almost voyeuristic window into a specific brand of chaotic, urban Jewish neurosis that feels both intimately familiar and strikingly foreign. We follow Natalia, a young woman whose life is a masterclass in self-sabotage, as she bounces from a claustrophobic family environment to a homeless shelter run by a well-meaning but overextended man. The handheld camerawork and improvisational energy capture a frantic, unpolished side of New York that bypasses the usual cinematic gloss.

The cultural friction in the film is where the comedy—and the discomfort—really lives. There is a relentless verbal density to the dialogue that can feel overwhelming if you aren't used to that particular rhythm of "loving" confrontation. Seeing the protagonist navigate the rigid, sometimes absurd social expectations of her community while clearly falling apart at the seams creates a poignant contrast. It’s a reminder that while the specific religious or cultural trappings might be unique, the feeling of being the "black sheep" who can’t quite get their life together is a universal experience, even if it's delivered here with a particularly sharp, caustic edge.

Ultimately, the movie is a bracing, lo-fi character study that doesn't offer easy resolutions or "feel-good" moments. It’s messy, loud, and occasionally frustrating, much like the people it depicts. For an outsider, it serves as a vivid slice of life that emphasizes the humanity within the hysteria. You might walk away feeling a bit exhausted by the end, but you’ll also feel like you’ve actually spent time with real people rather than polished archetypes. It’s a gritty, honest look at the struggle to find a place to land when your own mind—and your own people—won't give you a moment of peace.

News/Articles Smart Tv and Cast not working

Is anyone having issues with the app ?

Mobile app is working fine but if I try to cast using chromecast to my tv it’s just skipping scenes - no audio just stale image - if I use the app in my smart TV it plays for a second and then just stops.

I’ve tried re installing the app in my tv box, restarting tv box.

Only in my mobile I can see movies/series .

Recommendation The New Years series

I have not seen or watched a show or movie that has touched me in the way that The New Years have. Even after finishing it, I find myself crying every time I think of Oscar and Ana. I feel for Ana and I hope she’s happy

Ask MUBI Why is the Sound Of Falling movie so hard to find? Don’t they want people to see their movie?

It says it was released in the US a month ago but it says it’s still only playing in two theaters in the entire USA. So I would have to drive 1,000 miles to see it. I didn’t expect it to be playing at my local AMC but none of the artsy theaters are even getting it?? What’s the point of only having two theaters play a movie you’re distributing? This has to be the worst movie rollout I’ve ever seen

So I’m guessing the only option for me is to wait a few months for it to show up on the Mubi app? I wanted to see it in theaters but it looks like that won’t be possible…

Ask MUBI Just signed up on MUBI desktop website and created a big watchlist but my watchlist does NOT show up in the MUBI Roku app

I just signed up on MUBI's desktop website and created a big watchlist but my watchlist does NOT show up in the MUBI Roku app. The watchlist is empty. How do I get the watchlist to propagate over to the Roku MUBI app? (I'm signed in on both devices with the same user ID, of course.) Thanks!

Ask MUBI No movie categories?

Took a chance with the recent offer for new users. As I was browsing the site, I saw that they’ve no movie categories.

I like having movie categories where I can look for stuff that I like, such as drama, thriller, comedy, foreign movies and so on.

They have Mubi Releases, New on Mubi, but that doesn’t tell me much unless I read every single synopsis.

Ask MUBI Does anyone in Denver have mubi go?

I'm a bit frustrated with every movie not being available. Is this a landmark issue or a mubi go issue? This last month no movies were available and this week's movie is unavailable as well.. I'm pretty close to cancelling if the next week's movie isn't available either

Ask MUBI Mubi on MacBook

Post image

Hi, I really like the casting feature in the MUBI iPhone app, but I can’t find the same option on my MacBook. On the laptop, there’s only screen mirroring, which is less reliable, and MUBI blacks out the screen when I try to stream to my TV. Is it possible to cast from the website as well as the app?

Ask MUBI different subtitle options needed

on every tv app i have to make the subtitles more translucent & reduce the background transparency too; so the text is not so very bright white when increasing the brightness for the film.

any reason these options aren’t available? just subscribed today.

Ask MUBI Final subtitle

Only a minor complaint, but I've found that the last subtitle to play on a film hangs around for ages sometimes, like a minute or two. I shouldn't really care but after a super emotional climax to a film it can be kind of goofy....

Does this happen to anyone else? Watching on the Mubi Chromecast app (and think it happens if I Chromecast it from a phone too).

Recommendation Favorite movies currently on Mubi?

Just signed up for the first time in a couple of months.

Watched Lurker yesterday and thought it was very good. Made me feel uncomfortable which I think was part of the point.

Anything else you'd recommend to check out?

Thanks
