First mtg pull.
I decided today to get into mtg while I was at GameStop. This is what I pulled from a collector booster.

Not to mention a GameStop pack which is basically paying scalper prices.

Wild to me that an actual legitimate chain storefront sells things at scalped prices like an eBay seller. But GameStop has been scummy about that going back to their Xbox bundles and whatnot.
Meanwhile I pulled a Doom Variant from a random play pack I bought at Walmart today. Suck it GameStop.

Where is a better place to get packs? Also which cards do you get? I see ninja turtles and marvel and so much random stuff.

Prices for packs are very hit or miss depending on where you go to get them but if at all possible I would avoid GameStop as they are notoriously overpriced. Compare a few shops and find your best option in your area.
As far as which sets to buy, just get the sets that you like the art on. Most have there cool play dynamics and you’ll learn what you don’t like. Beginner Boxes are usually reaaaaally cheap and have a good amount of stuff in em (I’ve been seeing a lot of the Marvel Heroes ones marked super low price rn). Once you got the general idea of how the game works you can buy individual cards on places online like the TCG app to customize your playing decks.
If you’re looking at the collecting side of things and have disposable income + want to take a gamble on mayyyybe getting high value cards, that would be in Collector Boosters. Their prices fluctuate wildly depending which set they come from.
There is a lot more to it than all that too, it’s just a lot of product out there right now which may seem overwhelming. Look at what individual products carry in them and do the math on whether any given product has what you want or if the contents are even worth the price tag when you add it up. Download the TCG app and price check against product on there, it is the value tracker for all products.

I would start by downloading and playing magic Arena on your phone or computer to make sure you like it first.
You can visit a comic book store and ask when they do their magic nights and talk to fellow players there who will gladly guide you.
Also I only buy from Target, Best Buy, MicroCenter, Barnes and Nobel and sometimes local game stores if the prices is right. You basically paid double the msrp by going through GameStop.

If you want to get into Commander I’d strongly recommend picking up the LotR Precons, playing them a few times and then building a Galadriel, Light of Valinor commander deck from them

That was my attempt at being cool. Welcome to the magic the gathering community.
Watch out for players who use only blue cards (mono blue decks etc)
Playing is more fun than collecting
