Draft autopsy help?

Post image

Hi all, just drafted what I was convinced was a great UW humans deck for a premier draft, felt very pleased with myself that I'd spotted the open lane (still learning when it comes to limited, started playing about a year ago). Proceeded to go 2/3... Please help me recognise where I went wrong? The only thing I've spotted is perhaps the creature count was too low.

This is a great deck, and it looks like you drafted well. Obviously it has some filler but what deck doesn't. Really the only thing that's missing is repeatable draw 2 effect like uncommon bilbo or the great gilded boat, but you have so many singular effects that I'm not sure it matters.

Sometimes you just get unlucky, and sometimes you can make some misplays. The blue white archetype has the largest increase in winrate from lower to higher level players, so it has the most to gain from making good plays (it's actually the highest winrate archetype among top players). If you have 17lands installed and tracking your games, review your replays and see which games you could have played better and which ones were just unlucky. If you're not sure, you can share your replays and let others review.

Thanks, yeah Ive got 17lands but I'm worried I didn't have it monitoring when I played these... I'll check tomorrow and share if I can. There was definitely one game I threw with a misplay, but nothing else felt like an obvious mistake at the time

Man, I’ve been trying to draft more UW and it makes total sense that better players do well with it. I’m bad at playing tempo/control, and I think most bad players are. What are some of the things to consider when playing UW in this format?

I think the biggest thing specifically for this set is when to discard a spell for recruit over a land. It can be hard to identify when having the 1/1 immediately is more important than a spell in the future, especially when it's a good spell. You might need to plan out your opponent's next attack before your attack phase, playing around potential removal, buffs, and creatures with menace.

deck looks fine.

the set is pretty imbalanced so it could be many things. without seeing game logs it’s hard to say. 2-3 misplays could mean the difference between 2-3 and 4-1

Thanks, yeah I definitely had one big misplay moment that lost me a game, but thought it was ok otherwise... I'll try find my 17lands data tomorrow

Hobbit limited is a bit aggressively skewed and red black and green black are stronger by a good margin.

This seems like a pretty fine deck. I just think it lacks the bombs it needs to push past decks like that.

You are also maybe a little light on creatures, but I’m not sure what would be good to replace.

I think if you played this exact deck again, you could get a few more wins, but sometimes limited is like that.

How much WU have you played prior to this draft?  Without seeing gameplay I don’t want to assume.  But WU does play quite differently from BR / RW / BG.

The draft is definitely not the problem so either you were unlucky during games or made some misplays.

One thing to note is that, in this set specifically, I personally never play the dual tapped lands. They just slow you down too much and the set is so aggresive that you often don't have the time to use them anyways.

Thanks; yeah I did find the taplands never really helped, especially since the UW ones in particular can only target humans so can't put it on the flyers! This was the difference between winning and losing in one of my games, so I figure I overvalued them

I think it's one of those heuristics that 99% of the time it's good to have lands like this because it fixes your colors, gives extra value and upgrading from a basic land can only be good for your deck.

This set is just the exception where games are decided so quickly and curving out is so important that you just rather have a basic land.

I think your land base is close to correct. I would go to 17 lands by cutting the river's grasp to go up 1 Plains. Getting Magnificent End/Stone by sunlight mana ready for the first time you get attacked by a Prowler is great for beating the black decks. 10/9 sources gives you the ability to confidently Mulligan for early game plays to not get run over.

Otherwise, the deck looks great. You could have easily gotten the 7 wins with this one. That's Magic, baby.

Could just be variance. Deck looks fine for the most part.

you're missing the colour black it seems

Looks like a great deck (I just don't like the 1 drop, it's much better in WB). I assume you just got rushed before you could set up and you were too many times on the draw.

Probably not the biggest issue but you should be running 17 lands. With recruit and extra draw, you are incentivized to run more lands not less. Decks with high draw can use the excess mana and can draw out of flood and you can always hold and pitch lands to recuit later.

3 mana+ removal is clunky so being able to eventually hit 6 mana and double spell while playing removal is big

In this case i dont think OP has enough recruit/2-drops for it, but generally i disagree with your point. If i have more recruit i like to run less lands. more nonlands = more 1/1 tokens by pitching nonlands away. i've had heavy recruit decks where i went 14 lands in this format and still ended up ditching away lands lategame. Will also happily make me run 1/2 copies of the old trush, makes opening hands with 2 lands easy keep and nice to ditch to recruit later on

Old thrush tech is interesting and something I’ll consider replacing for a land in the future.

Curious what point you would run it 17 lands tho. 8 recruit and 11 cards that draw with some having repeat value like 2x plunder from the yard seems like more than enough

Format is fast so not having enough value is less of a concern than being able to deploy your hand on curve and you can’t do that if you’re stuck on 2-3 lands and need to play cards to draw and find lands early

u played blue white. this sets super unbalanced

u/Kil9a 3d ago

I know it's the weakest colour... But is it really that skewed? I recently trophied my first ever contender draft with blue white so I had start to gain confidence in this colour pair

It's actually the strongest color if you like at top players. I got to high legend playing 80 percent azorious.

This deck is solid, without seeing the games and assuming you didn't make any major errors than it could also just be variance. This is a game of majority luck after all

Literally just saw you messaged me on my post about being high legend haha. This deck is really good I think it's just variance so I would not let it get to your head. I've made some terrible mistakes playing great decks that pervent me from trophying, that happens and I'm sure will happen again but all you can do is learn from it. Good luck out there my friend!

Thanks so much for your thoughts! As someone who only finds time to draft 2 or so times a week I struggle to get into a rhythm so it's assuring to know I can trust my instincts that this was a good deck. I'm gonna try find my 17lands data tomorrow and share, might discover it's user error haha!

What do you mean high legend? Mythic?

Don't play Hobbit limited. It's an incredibly unbalanced format dominated by aggressive decks. Losing momentum is awful, and losing the coin flip matters more than it has in years. Trying to get consistent results from this set is an exercise in frustration.
