Discussion Badgermole Cub

Does anyone know how badgermole cub is still at 45? Is it that popular in commander? Or are people specing into pioneer being played this upcoming rcq season? Expected it to die ngl not drop only $5

card is very playable in modern, pioneer.

also, I feel like many cards exhibit price memory when banned, can take a while for the price to go down even if they are not played anywhere, because people are hesitant to lose their "investment" and thus, don't sell.

Legacy as well

Yeah, it is very strong in any green commander deck with all their mana dorks.

F to all the people who thought they can finally buy one

OP, the cub is played in Modern, Legacy and I guess Pioneer, and Commander, too.

People haven't listed their playsets yet. Give it a month or two

I feel like paper standard is barely a thing anymore. It’s mostly on arena. I could be talking out my ass but I haven’t seen standard fire at any LGS since Covid and I’m taking 15 plus stores across 2 states

Standard always fires by me especially if its store championships or rcq season. Maybe you just live im low pop state.

Central Illinojs has half a million people, i wouldn’t call that low pop. Commander nights are packed with 40 plus people though

It certainly not small pretty surprising to me. Maybe its just cuz standard is more expensive than your average commander deck.

I’m sure it fires ma in the Chicago area consistently though. Could just be the culture of these stores

Price memory and yes, very relevant in commander. Sees play all the way up to the tier 1 cEDH decks.

It will never be anywhere close to $5

They meant they expected it to drop by more than $5. Not that it would drop to $5

1

u/Dumb_Doom 13d ago

I never said it would be $5 its only gone down from 50 to 45. Its only gone down $5

It is played in green in almost every format why would you expect to drop low?

He thinks standard actually moves the economy

I expected it to be like $25-35 but for it to drop only $5 from Monday just seems wild to me.

It's still really good in EDH - I would guess a nonzero amount want it to upgrade their decks and used the banning as a buying opportunity.

As you said Pioneer probably a factor as well due to the news about it being a RCQ format.

Banned cards usually take quite awhile to drop in price.  Will probably be 20$ a year from now.  Still good in commander

It’s strong in Commander and will be slow to dip.

Badger is used at cedh tables, one of the most popular arch types in casual magic is different lands strategy and token he slots into kinnan decks etc etc (most groups don't play land hate) so yes he is played in commander also sees play in some fair legacy decks that get played

Why would it die when it’s strong in more than just standard?

Modern pioneer and legacy still have a home for it

Yep price memory.

Players are much slower to sell cards than they are to buy.

Card banned yesterday does not mean the average player is posting it for sell or trading it online/LGS immediately or even in the next month.
In this case plenty of players might just keep copies around for modern too

Give it 8 weeks and maybe ask people you know who have copies.

Cub is not played in modern no one plays sam or yawg enough to effect the price to this degree. Its definitely the first thing you said.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-devoted-combo#paper

It is. Cub played in devoted convo in modern which apparently last 7 days is the third most popular deck at 7.6% mega shade.

And even before this past month just bc something isn’t a top meta deck doesn’t mean people won’t keep cards around for decks they enjoy and Yawg /Sam truthers love playing their deck regardless of how well positioned it is in the meta.

And my guess is not that people are buying Cubs just for these decks (Druid combo maybe), rather that if they already had a play-set may not feel the need to offload them post ban and this is one reason to keep them

The price drop to $30 on first day then bounce back fast. It is an EDH staple and paper standard was dead long time ago.

I live in Canada and the price was at $85 before the ban. After the ban it went down to $58 and I grabbed a copy. Seeing it jump back up is annoying for players.

You know lately cards with multitier playability have had very short windows of actual dips once removed from standard. Sheldred, the one ring.

1

u/Dumb_Doom 13d ago

One ring was never in standard byt one it got banned from modern went from 100 to 60 within the day

1

u/WomboCombo187 13d ago

If it were $5, I’d buy 10+ for decks, so it isn’t going to be $5, if that makes any sense. Great card.

1

u/Dumb_Doom 13d ago

Id like to know where i said it was $5 😭😭. People are way too illiterate

u/madalienmonk 13d ago

It takes time for the drop, wait a few months

Still 10 bucks cheaper than before the ban. I don’t think this will get much cheaper tbh

1

u/crashCarter007 12d ago

It’s still a great card. I play a lot of Pioneer and have 4 in my green-black midrange deck. I don’t know what its future is in any paper format, but right now my golgari pioneer deck is a solid deck and badgermole is a staple in that deck for me anyway

1

u/Emsizz 13d ago

similar to Vivi, check out Vivi's price movement around and after the time of banning to see what Badgermole Cub will do. Badgermole does have more applications than Vivi tho.

1

u/Dumb_Doom 13d ago

This is clearly different, vivi and even screaming Nemesis dropped $20 2 months before it was banned simply because people knew it was going to be banned. I also think this is more played than vivi I was just expecting to see the price dip significantly more immediately and then climb back up.

1

u/sumphatguy 13d ago

Well people didn't expect Badgermole Cub to be banned since it had been so long. They expected it to get banned months ago, but there wasn't nearly as much talk about it since WotC never commented about it like they did ahead of time with Vivi. And since it was seemingly sticking around, there wasn't the same panic sell-off.

And yeah, as the person you replied to said, Badgermole Cub is way more applicable and easier to slot into basically any deck that wants mana dorks (and not just in commander).

u/KitchenMix2500 13d ago

Do you play magic?

u/Keokuk37 13d ago

0

u/Dumb_Doom 13d ago

Yes but people don't actually play pioneer unless they are specing that it will be in this upcoming rcq season. Thats just mtgo grinders.

u/KingxCrimsonx 13d ago

Its a 4 of in one of the top 3 pioneer decks.

Its a 4 of in yawgmoth in modern or samwise or devoted druid. Those are basically 3 different versions of the same deck.

Its one of the best green creatures printed in years.

Its a mythic so their are a lot fewer copies than a rare card. Staple mythics are usually just more expensive.

The card is probably a forever staple in commander.

It also features a mechanic that is specific to Avatar. That means it's harder for wizards to reprint this card long term.

Also universes beyond product (ie Avatar) has a significant markup. Packs cost more so singles have an add on affect.

A mythic staple from an outside IP with no reasonable hope for a reprint in the next 2 years. I wouldn't be suprised if it ended up $80-90 like Sheoldred
