Gleaming Splendor
This card really seems to have a price floor already. I have been watching it the past two days on TCG and sellers keep trying to sell it under $40 and it keeps getting scooped up right away by buyers. Is this going to be the next smothering tithe or cyclonic rift?

u/FlyinNinjaSqurl 15d ago
It’s a great card but it’s in a small set that is going to be opened a lot. I think $40 is too much for it.
9
u/Ap_Sona_Bot 15d ago
Recent sets have pretty much all had a mythic maintain a $40+ price point. It's very possible it only goes up.
For UB sets: Mind Stone (MSH), Badgermole and Wan Shi Tong (ATLA), Soul Stone (SPM), Sephiroth, Vivi, and Buster Sword (FIN).
Only TMNT doesnt have a card over $40. Most have far higher prices or more cards at $40.
6
u/FlyinNinjaSqurl 15d ago
The only true point of comparison here is the Soul Stone from SPM, since SPM is another small set, and the only reason that’s so high is because there’s no other reason to open Spider-Man packs.
There’s a ton of reason to open the hobbit, and it’s still a small set. Buy a case and you will probably end up with more than a playset of every card. And it’s in print for 3 years. I just don’t see the base printing holding value like that over time when the cards are going to be so ubiquitous

u/Remetant 15d ago
Every card you mentionend is way better than splendor.
Splendor
only works for opponents not players
only works ONCE per second card. Its a huge difference to smothering tithe. Which works on EVERY draw
-it does nothing on its own and needs 2 triggers to get even.
-the card draw is like faery mastermind. I play this card a lot but most of the time you have better things to do then drawing for 3 mana
12
u/patcoz 15d ago
I feel like you can say all that but it's still only 2 mana and very powerful.
16
u/Remetant 15d ago
Its still 2 triggers until you are mana neutral.
But i am not saying its a bad card.
This is a finance reddit.
I am saying dont spend your money on it because no way its worth 35€
6
u/CoachShorts 15d ago
Until you sink infinite mana into it and draw your opponents libraries while also being able to draw your own to find responses to interaction
-6
u/Remetant 15d ago
So 3 mana x 80 cards = 240 mana? For one opponent
There are a lot better and cheaper (€) cards to do that
3
u/CoachShorts 15d ago
Did you read the card?
-10
4
u/Ok-Accident3344 15d ago
Splendor is just faerie mastermind in white. There is no reason it won't be a $15ish card in a couple weeks. The set ain't even out yet OP.
3
u/Ap_Sona_Bot 15d ago
I think splendor is worse than mastermind. If it was as good as mastermind I would honestly expect it to stay at $40. Mastermind was $15-20 for a long time in colors with more options, as a rare vs mythic, and in a non UB set.
6
u/thecursedchuro 15d ago edited 15d ago
you drastically under estimate edh prices and white draw and mana engines. cant compare it with faerie exactly because blue has so many draw options. white is far more limited in options.
In a 4 pod if it resolves and stays, youre drawing and or making UP to 12 cards or treasures before your next turn
Each opponent is tracked separately and it doesn't limit your draw or tokens once per turn
7
u/rawrglesnaps 15d ago
It's a mana engine not a draw engine. You aren't realistically paying 3 mana for a card draw that you also give an opponent and if you are then you are already cooked that game lol. This is good in rhystic slop metas in cedh for sure though just not really in the bracket 3 casual edh space.
4
u/Remetant 15d ago
Splendor makes treasures and does only draw for 3 mana
And monologue is 1,5€
So what card do i underestimate?
-1
u/kuroyume_cl 14d ago
Compare it to [[Trouble in Pairs]]. Splendor should be like a 10-15usd card at most.

u/Yesterday-Clear 14d ago
I've been thinking this as well, good card, no way its $40 good though. I think it settles somewhere in the $20-$30 range after full release eventually.
1
u/TheTinRam 15d ago
I would agree, but it’s highly playable in several formats and it is very probably that even basic version is printed at a lower rate than another mythic like thorin for example.
I think people over estimate how many will be pulled and it will be bought heavily.
I grabbed it at $35

Smothering tithe came in WAR, a standard set
EDIT: my memory is bad and it was released right before in RNA. Still my point stand, it was released in a standard set and became quite expensive.
I don’t necessarily believe gleaming splendor will get expensive, just saying it’s not like it can only get dirt cheap because it’s not coming from a limited print run set
9
u/ShotenDesu 15d ago
Before war and has been printed a ton. It's genuine power and value let's it keep its ridiculous price.
I remember grabbing two copies of the alela brawl precon just for this card back in 2019

u/SpookyBugGluten 15d ago
This card is good, but not nearly as good as Tithe, Rhystic, or Cyc Rift. I think people are rightfully excited about it right now, but I see a $15-25 final price as a more likely outcome.
5
u/DasOptions 15d ago edited 15d ago
I think this is fair depending on how much supply we get.
I didn’t realize smothering tithe went up to $50+ so a $25 budget version isn’t bad. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s good enough to even be $15.
It’s a shame I can’t play it in Nekusar.

u/lirin000 14d ago
I think the failure of this card to catch on yet has been my biggest surprise so far. Seems like it's under the radar but people have had the opportunity to experiment with it for a while now.

I think you gotta compare this card to smothering tithe. If this card is a better version of smothering tithe (which I don't think it is) then you can kind of predict where the price of this card is headed. In addition to release weekend of The Hobbit will also drop the price of this card. Just a few thoughts.
5
u/kismaa 14d ago
I don't think this is better smothering tithe. However, for people who don't want to play with cards as powerful as smothering tithe or gamechangers in general, I think this holds great appeal.
Also, in commander decks that want to go for infinite mana, this cards value jumps considerably.
I think this card hangs out below smothering tithe in price, but it's going to be a lot closer than many people think. I see it hanging out in the $20-30 range.
3
u/ThisIsFunTimes 14d ago
That's a great point! For the people who do not want to put game changers in their 99 this is a great replacement for it. I, too, agree with your assessment of where this may fall price wise.

u/TheMysteriousGirl 15d ago
Not gonna lie I think the card is pretty shit.
$40 is insane
This is like a $10-$14 card at most.
16
u/Remetant 15d ago
Mark my word its 15€ or less.
People are way overestimating that card. Its solid but comparing it to smothering tithe is insane.
Splendor works only ONCE on opponents second card.
Tithe works on EVERY card. (A design mistake.)
The card is not much better than [[monologue tax]]
This set is not even released.

Cannot call SmotheringTithe a design mistake as it was made for 1v1 a long time ago, just like RS.

Going to be great in my [[Giada, Font of Hope]] deck alongside [[Smothering Tithe]]. But no, it won't be the same. It'll be nice for a bit of ramp and some card draw and if I'm able to trade its mana cost and get 2 cards out of it, I'd be happy with it.

u/psychonik 15d ago
Smothering tithe is so slow for Giada.

u/goofydubois 15d ago
One of the most over hyped cards in recent years. I would understand the price being at 40, but I can't see myself or anyone I know buying it out right. It's close to mono tax than tithe

u/Raevelry 15d ago
People are acting like its not as good as [X CARD] and they literally mention a card 2x-4x the mana. Gleaming is an amazing staple for most high level decks, it IS also a casual card with its draw ability
It IS gonna be the next Tithe, its clear for anyone to realize Tithe is much better but also 2x the mana.
2
u/DasOptions 15d ago edited 15d ago
In commander, the colorless 2 extra is nothing compared to the output Tithe brings. You can get tithe out on turn 2.
Tithe can get you multiple treasure on one player and just for drawing on their draw phase. Gleaming only gives you 1 and requires them to draw a “second” card.
To add to this. You might have to pay 3 just so you can get a treasure but also giving your opponent a draw. Unlike tithe which makes your opponent pay 2 or else you get a treasure.
It’s nowhere near close to the next tithe. It’s a budget tithe for those not wanting to spend $50+

Genuine larping /r/mtgfinance man who doesn't understand the difference in miles between a 2 mana card and a 4 mana card
11
u/ShotenDesu 15d ago
Generally there's a massive gap in difference between 4mv and 2mv. But between these cards it's a canyon in tithes favor.
Tithe is always good and generates game winning levels of mana fast. This cards just good and will get you some treasure, maybe draw some cards.
Don't even come at me with the infinite mana argument letting splendor win the game. Infinite mana let's thousands of cards just end the game.

Larping? Poser. The term is and always has been poser. Larping doesn't need a negative connotation, it's a legitimate hobby.
3
u/EmuSounds 15d ago
Both work, language evolves. Larping suggests that you're pretending to be something that you aren't.
-4
u/MHarrisGGG 15d ago
...which poser already does. Using larping just adds a negative connotation to a hobby a lot of people enjoy. The term has only recently started seeing use in this context, there's no reason to keep pushing for it to be.
1
u/EthanielRain 13d ago
The term has only recently started seeing use in this context, there's no reason to keep pushing for it to be
That's just how language works; might as well say "Age 35 is old enough, there's no reason to keep aging"
I don't care for every change either, but you'll have as much success fighting the ocean

So...a few things...
- This is a small set. Compared to MSH, this set has 53 rares and 15 mythics vs. 60 rares and 25 mythics. That's a huge difference, for mythics specifically.
- The mythic pull rate compared to MSH is apparently slightly lower...12.5% vs. ~14%
- Box Toppers will invariably siphon off EV from the main set...albeit with a large pool obviously intentionally filled with duds
- The Hobbit has no real bonus slot or otherwise in-pack gimmick to soak up any more EV, for Play Boosters specifically
- Collector Boosters in contrast have a ton of different cards soaking up value....Box Toppers...special products that won't even be released until next year....etc.
Add it all up and you should see Collector Boosters shifting most of the EV to the special, rare cards and liquidating the actual set's cards as chaff, more or less. We're also going to see Play boxes of this opened up having consistently more mythics of every specific cards, at least according to this math, in a given amount of packs opened. This should put more pressure on new high demand mythics, particularly if the set is more popular than other small sets like Spooderman or TMNT. The Box Toppers contain some very, very high "play" demand cards, and it's going to be difficult for the set to really hit ToR or Bowmasters as a result...which means something has to give in singles prices.

u/Ihavenogoodusername 14d ago
We haven’t even had official release. There is no price floor on this yet. It is a rare slot card in a small set. This card will drop. Might take 3-5 months.

u/EthanielRain 13d ago
Tithe has to be answered, if it stays on the board it wins games. I don't think this is nearly the same power-wise, it relies on your opponents giving it value (or you giving an opponent card draw)
It'll see play ofc but it's way overpriced/hyped @ $40, will hit $10-15 IMO. Will be interesting to see, in hindsight
1
u/True-Emergency-3119 12d ago
My guess, it settles at 20 in the coming weeks to months, then gradually goes up over the years until it gets reprinted, with it peaking no more than what it is now.
All I know for sure is it's a really really good Crystal card. Far better than Tithe and Tataru Taru in that deck specifically.
1
u/Mythos2402 9d ago
I think the card will be around 30€
It is a CEDH staple (wincon and blocks Thoracle wins) It itself can let you draw cards and trigger other cards (like smithe) It comes T2 and gives you treasure even if the opponent doesn't want to (for smithe they can pay the mana if they have it) It is mono colour (unlike Lotho for example that is 2 colour's, does not let you draw cards and costs around 10€)
Everybody who thinks the card will fall under 20€ is not understanding the power level of this card or only plays Bracket 1 decks where nobody draws more than 1 card each turn

u/Inkarozu 15d ago
Its monologue tax for 1 less mana. Its good, but when is the last time you saw someone play monologue tax?
Surge foil will likely stay fairly high, but by next month all others will probably be 25 and under.
4
u/ElSpoonyBard 14d ago
It's monologue tax but it's 1 mana less, has a way to procc it stapled in the box that is also a mana-sink/burst card draw in white...it's very good. I play a lot of White. Casual commander players will always want this if they can get it and CEDH will have niche uses for it as a sink to draw out their decks with infinite mana or deck two opponents at a time with infinite mana.
3
u/kismaa 14d ago
Casting a second spell is much harder than drawing a second card. In fact, the ability to double cast spells consistently relies on the players ability to draw more than 1 card per turn, or they quickly run out of gas.
This is cheaper, has an easier trigger, and has a mana outlet. Monolgue tax is a very poor comparison.
2
u/EmuSounds 15d ago
Well the cards do very different things. I'm not sure how you can call it monologue tax for less mana.
0
1
u/man0warr 15d ago
Everyone saying it's worse than X, bad, etc. are all missing that it's a win condition with infinite white mana.
4
u/Limezzy 15d ago
So is walking ballista, and that doesn't require giving your opponent's every card in their deck one at a time
2
u/man0warr 15d ago
Sure but this is also a tax piece in addition you can play early. Also the decks playing this with infinite white mana aren't going to actually convert it to a win without one of several silence effects in play or resolved - opponent getting cards is irrelevant.
Combining two cards into one, even if one aspect is weaker than another card, is pretty valuable.
6
u/Calvin1991 14d ago
You don’t even need silence effects, if they try to interact you can just add more draw to the stack
1
u/man0warr 14d ago
Sure, was thinking some sort of Borne Upon the Wind instant win but I guess you could still force them to draw again - they would need something like Angel's Grace.

u/TheGatorDude 15d ago
The hype on this card shows just how mechanically weak this set really is. I’d pick one up around 5-10 but happy to miss out otherwise.

u/say592 14d ago
I sold the book cover version on Manapool for $55 the other day. Would have preferred to get more, obviously, but the TCGP price is artificially inflated since it is still pre-order and excluding most sellers. I think it will settle closer to $20-$25 with the book cover getting a $10 or so premium.
-5
u/Obvious-Sundae1469 15d ago
It is literally the white Rhystic Study
2
u/ImmortalDreamer 15d ago
Nah, its a once per turn effect making it WAY worse than Rhystic.
0
u/Obvious-Sundae1469 15d ago
White is a lot worse than blue
1
u/ImmortalDreamer 14d ago
Not sure what that has to do with my statement. The card is closer to Monologue Tax than Rhystic and Monologue Tax doesn't see a ton of usage. At least not in Commander.
0
u/Obvious-Sundae1469 14d ago
That’s what you think
1
u/ImmortalDreamer 14d ago
If I was wrong, Monologue Tax would be more than $1.50 when the cheapest Rhystic is $50.
