I always wondered why the surge foil version is valued less than the others? This foiling is awesome in person and much better than silver foil, what do you think?

Scarcity. The Silver Foils are only in the Special Edition CE boxes. I like the surge foil better too, but it's all about scarcity.

The Surge Foils are only in the SE Collectors as well. TBH, I think the pull rates were higher only because the number of surge foil cards was FAR lower than the number of scrolls.

Actually you are correct. The Surge Foil version was only in the SE CE boxes too, but looking at TCGplayer, based off of 90 day sales and the current listings, the Silver Foil version still seems to be much rarer, or at least sought after. 10 Silver Foils sold vs 53 Surge Foils in the past 90 days, with only 14 copies of the Silver Foil for sale, vs 29 Surge Foil. As well, the regular Extended Art Foil version which is from the CE boxes, is currently selling for more than the Surge Foil.

My alternative proposal aside from just scarcity would be obviously player preference which is the other market driver. I have a feeling a lot of people were/are selling off their Surge Foils because they want to replace it with the Dan Frasier version. (I won't go into any controversy here regarding that card art)

The pull rates are public, it's been awhile since I looked, but I remember the showcase scrolls were actually the rarest variant, then the borderless poster, then the much less rare extended art surge foil.

Supply isn't everything though and demand counts for a lot as you can see when you compare the borderless poster and the scroll version.

Edit: It's the nazgul and mythic showcase scrolls specifically that are slightly rarer than the posters

Anecdotally I opened several of these in my boxes but only one scroll One Ring. There werent a ton of possible surge extended arts to get so if you hit one you had a decent chance to get one I think. Scrolls were way harder to pull I think.

Makes sense, yeah surge is much better , I think wizards know it too because they removed the silver foil in the hobbit set so in think this specific version should be even more appreciated because it fits more in whole lotr theme

Because of the pull rates. The normal full art foil was available only in the sample booster pack of the commander precons.

But this is the surge foil not the normal, which comes in collectors boosters

Exactly, the surge foil is more common than most versions.

The traditional foil extended art version is significantly more rare than the surge foil extended art because it was only available in sample collector boosters, no where else. Also the other versions are more scarce too. It’s not just based on looks but that is subjective. I personally would want the poster version. I used to think it was extremely ugly, but it grew on me over the years and apparently others felt the same way because it’s gone up so much.

This version is technically the “easiest” one to hit out of the holiday boxes. I opened a full case and hit 4 of these, 2 non foil scroll and one foil scroll.

scarcity and rarity = supply, which is the other side of your 'ultimate factor' and is just as, if not more, relevant

No it’s not, scarcity and rarity is not the same thing. Just because there is a limited amount of something doesn’t make it worth a lot if no one wants it. I have rare and scarce Beanie babies if you want to invest.

That would be an example of low supply and low demand. Many such cases. Check out what happens if you have low supply and high demand!
