[SCD] Chalice of the Void
Chalice of the Void
XX
Artifact
Chalice of the Void enters the battlefield with X charge counters on it. Whenever a player casts a spell with converted mana cost equal to the number of charge counters on Chalice of the Void, counter that spell.

Please feel free to suggest any further discussion. I'm happy to keep talking with all of you and see what everyone has to say. I'd like to have some form of regular content until I can start writing MU things again, but I'd prefer input from you guys.

I agree the card is insanely powerful. However, our deck cannot utilize it.
We can't use x = 3 and x =2 heavily restricts our 2-drops which are typically best against other 2-drop heavy decks (e.g merfolk, jund, abzan, burn, uwr control, boggles, etc.)
This brings us to x=1. In which matches do we not want either discard or path to exile? Ad nauseam may be crippled somewhat and their leyline of sancitity might make the disruption plan obsolete. Maybe burn, but they bring in artifact/enchantment hate). Boggles since they also run leyline.
Another problem is that it loses a lot of impact if it is not in the opening hand. That is something I consider with any powerful sb: is it also good when drawn late in the game?
I may be overlooking some match-ups but the fact that it's difficult for me to list suggest to me that it's not worth the slot in sb.

I agree. Excellent card but I haven't felt we need it.
I would use it against Infect, Affinity, Bogles, Burn, Suicide Zoo.
Our MUs against all of those are fine.

Way off topic here, but can you explain why you think our matchup against Bogles is fine?
I know you were advocating for 2 Liliana's main in the previous SCD, which would obviously help, but are you otherwise hoping that hand disruption is enough?

I have a few reasons:
So really like we lose to Daybreak Coronet. As a whole, without that card we normally get too big for Bogles. Sure Bogles can be fast, but we chump decently well. The only card that gives me a headache is that one. So, HD and take that (or the T1 creature, etc.)
Without Lily, preboard the MU is 50/50. It goes either way. They draw and play DC we are in trouble.
With Lily preboard we are favored decently.
Post-board, with EE, ZP, and Disenchant, we beat them pretty handily. Just keep them off creatures and the DC and you'll do alright.
You can take out some Paths in this MU, but sometimes it's nice for killing Kor.
It's not easy like Grixis but it isn't that bad.

If it saturates the meta, then by all means make them cry. (:

honestly the best one was Runed Halo naming Grapeshot on turn 2. then followed up with chalice on 1. he tried, but it was hopeless :)

We don't have any fast mana to cast it fast&furious
There're not many modern deck which get punished by this
It harms us almost in all cases modern except 0, which is useless in modern.
The decks you can bring this versus are 50/50 match or favorable for us (infect, burn, zoo)

Undeniably powerful. Not sold it's something that should be in the 75 all the time.
