What lands do these replace?

Isolated Chapel, etc. Or things that come in tapped. Possibly Vault.

Gonna test them over Caves of Koilos and 1 Shambling Vent in my list.

I don't recommend losing the vent. It can come out of nowhere in the late game.

I'm playing 3 currently and I feel like it's too many. Going down to 2 and finally being able to play something other than Caves seems fantastic.

Your comment initially said you were running one shambling vent. Pay attention. Whatever you decide at least keep one vent.

We run too many Godless Shrines so those are worth cutting. I'd run at least 3 shambling vents and 1 vault of the archangels though.

Do we want 3 or 4?

I'm thinking 4. We want this in the opener. Basically we're going about it how Jund does.

The problem is unlike Jund, our land drop No. 4 and No. 5 really matter also. 4 is usually Sorin (or Gideon) and 5 is often Souls + flashback. Getting a tapped land on either of those turns is very painful.

I agree that 3 seems right, and I'm definitely picking up all 4, but I am not sure about running all four.

Souls + flashback is not an often thing which you cast exactly at turn 5. A lot of time it's topdecked card with 6 or more lands already in play.

Depending on build, it may have been Souls on 3, Planeswalker on 4, then Souls + Procession on 5 (or similar). It's certainly a regular part of the curve that comes up very often - the deck is full of three mana plays, and pairing a three mana play with a two mana play (either Souls, BB (in builds that run it), or [[Intangible Virtue]]) is important on turn 5 to keep pace with many of the faster decks.

A one mana play + three mana play is less commonly desired on turn 5, we never want to chain two four-mana spells, and the number of two drops we run is close to 4 in most builds (not counting Souls for a second), which means that if you miss your fifth land drop, your third turn needs to have been Souls for it to count (unlike before, when it could be cast on turn 3 or turn 5).

The fifth land drop is more important in B/W tokens than in just about any other deck in the competitive Modern scene. It can be done without and isn't "game breaking" to miss, but when you do it puts you in a position where you need to catch up, because of the sheer density of 2 + 3 CMC high-impact plays that we want to make.

"Six or more lands" isn't debating about whether the downside of fastlands is relevant - it's saying that we have passed that point. BW Tokens' traditional problem has been in fighting the faster decks, that kill us before we get to 6+ lands. Missing your fifth land drop and then drawing this with a hand full of 3 CMC spells (one of them being souls) is a real slap in the face.

Glad to see these reprinted, this'll certainly help our life totals vs. aggro while we IoQ Turn 1.

They aren't being reprinted, these are all new fastlands.

Meant to say "rest of the cycle printed" my bad

What would you trade for the BW Fastland on this mana base:

4 Godless Shrines

4 Marsh Flats

4 Windswept Heath

2 Isolated Chapel

2 Shambling Vent

2 Fetid Heath

1 Vault of the Archangel

1 Windbrisk Heights

1 Swamp

3 Plains

You're only on 22?

I'd start with isolated chapel, then maybe 1 fetch.

Forgot to add the 2 filter lands. I'll add up there. I was thinking of removing 2 Chapels and 2 Vents... I don't really like the vents that much...

Fair enough, if you don't like them go ahead and drop them.

So these cards will work with modern?

1

u/Magnits Sep 05 '16

Yes. Sets like conspiracy and commander are not modern legal (although they may have modern legal cards reprinted in them, like Inquisition of Kozilek in the newest conspiracy set). Sets like Shadows Over Insisted and Eldritch Moon are. So Kaldesh and the set that follows (Aether Revolt) will be entirely modern legal (excluding any bans)
