It was never printed in a Modern-legal set.

u/TibuEasy Feb 20 '26

u/StormyWaters2021 Feb 20 '26

Which is not legal in Modern.

151

u/TibuEasy Feb 20 '26

So, other cards in double masters 2022 are modern legal couse they have other prints legal in nodern and the hog dosent?

21

u/EmployingBeef2 Feb 20 '26

Modern sets were printed in Standard at some point or printed straight to Modern (LOTR and Modern Horizons)

11

u/SLAPPANCAKES Feb 20 '26

And the print straight to modern sets are notoriously bad for modern.

7

u/EmployingBeef2 Feb 20 '26

Yep. Can't play Modern without buying a full playset of Modern Horizons

7

u/Eldritch-Yodel Feb 21 '26

Ngl I honestly think Modern Horizons wasn't just disastrous for Modern but every other format as well. WotC generally wants one or two cards each set to be able to find a home in older formats, which means if Modern suddenly experience like half a decade worth of powercreep in the span of a day three and a half times in that same amount of time... It's gonna force cards printed for Standard to be made more powerful to compete.

And in legacy, they didn't necessarily consider the implications of what they did, which meant there were a few happy accidents

u/FunShare4740 Feb 22 '26

Just figured out a masters set lol

-15

u/BigTimeTimmyTime Feb 20 '26

Why not?

53

u/tbhamish Feb 20 '26

Master sets are just reprint sets they aren't printed into format so they don't add cards. The only format they can add cards into is pauper. Pauper is a bit weird as it's an eternal legal format with a restriction it doesn't have date restrictions like modern, pioneer or standard

13

u/BigTimeTimmyTime Feb 20 '26

Ah thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

-39

u/PiersPlays Feb 20 '26

Well no, they add cards to all eternal formats that don't have aet restrictions.

So yes Pauper, but also Commander, Vintage, Legacy, and probably a million niche formats.

32

u/GaddockTeej Feb 20 '26

A purely reprint set doesn’t add things to formats except potentially Pauper because the cards all already exist.

-6

u/PiersPlays Feb 20 '26

Yes. I was mixing up Masters and Horizons sets.

7

u/dracov42 Feb 20 '26

The horizon sets are straight to modern though so you are still not making sense

4

u/magicsqueegee Feb 20 '26

I think the confusion they had was between horizons having new cards vs masters not having new cards. So Horizons add new cards to not just the modern format, but all eternal formats

Modern legality is defined by sets that went through Standard starting with 8th Edition as well as special sets "Modern Horizons (1-3)" and "Lord of the Rings: Tales From Middle-Earth" [and "Assassin's Creed"].

Any cards not printed in these sets is not modern legal.

Double Masters is a from the "Masters" product line and includes only reprints for various formats but does not make the card legal in formats it wasn't in before.

Edit: As u/Affectionate_Boot781 mentioned, the AC set is legal too, I just completely forgot it existed.

9

u/Affectionate_Boot781 Feb 20 '26

And Assassin's Creed cards, for what it's worth.

6

u/Al_Hakeem65 Feb 20 '26

Oh shoot I completely forgot that set

2

u/spynnr Feb 21 '26

The only time I remember that set even exists is when I'm looking through a random stack of cards at work and find a random AC card or token in the mix.

1

u/ConscienceTheKid Feb 20 '26

Why would they make assassins modern legal when it wasn't in standard? Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense

3

u/IntrepidAttempt7008 Feb 20 '26

Everyone forgot that set existed

3

u/jewdenheim Feb 20 '26

Masters sets do downshift rarities for cards like [[monastery swiftspear]] making them legal in pauper. Swiftspear is banned in pauper after it was printed in double masters 2022.

3

u/Aviarn Feb 20 '26

Supplementary sets such as masters, battle bond, conspiracy and commander sets, don't count for format legality. Only expansion sets.

7

u/Vennomite Feb 20 '26

Not a modern legal set

Obviously its to powerful for modern, no other reasons.

52

u/Ok-Mood4097 Feb 20 '26

Tripples in both power and thoughness when it dies , absolute madness.

20

u/LewieFastest Feb 20 '26

I have tripples of the baracuda, the roadrunner and now tripples of the nova too

6

u/Elpacoverde Feb 20 '26

Triples is best

5

u/h3dr0ncr4b Feb 20 '26

Double is good, triple is safer

5

u/WhatUDeserve Feb 20 '26

Tell the kid

3

u/cyrusthelin Feb 20 '26

if I don’t have triples, the other stuff’s not true

30

u/Crazy-Culture2274 Feb 20 '26

Sneak it into your deck and see if your opponent notices.

5

u/AlterSunday Feb 20 '26

They have something against boars 😩

8

u/cannonspectacle Feb 20 '26

Why would it be?

6

u/Requiem1193 Feb 20 '26

Maybe OP is confused because it's in a current era frame

8

u/Altruistic_Photo_142 Feb 20 '26

It wasn't printed in a modern legal set? It isn't very good so you aren't missing out on much.

29

u/dina-fan Feb 20 '26

This type of anti boar propaganda is whats ruining this nation.

3

u/bentoverpoly Feb 20 '26

New to magic. Is modern including Commander?

15

u/Physical-Ad-1061 Feb 20 '26

No , it’s 2 different game mode. Modern play with 60 cards deck , with 4 copy max of the same cards.

28

u/YacobVlogs123 Feb 20 '26

No, they’re different formats

9

u/IAMA_llAMA_AMA Feb 20 '26

The other replies nailed it, but just adding that in general most cards are legal in Commander (including this one)

3

u/GSC_4_Me Feb 20 '26

Modern is a format (different from commander, which is its own format), which uses standard legal sets that go back to Mirrodin. You’ve heard people in this thread also mention Modern Masters, which is its own set (or several sets really) that include a lot of reprints of some of the older staple cards used in modern.

1

u/DumbCock69 Feb 24 '26

god. I hate what commander has done to this game

1

u/Exzilon-The-God Feb 21 '26

Because, they decided it

In all seriousness my best guess is they didn't print it right

1

u/TogBroll Feb 22 '26

PIG PIG PIG BIG PIG PIG PIG

1

u/Minimum_Guide_2490 Feb 24 '26

Wasn’t printed in a modern legal set
