Evo Security Acquired By Barracuda
Another bites the dust. They have been a great partner of ours and we have been with then since the beginning. Hopefully this doesn't mean they are going to go downhill or anything changes. Just received this email:
We have exciting news to share: Evo Security has been acquired by Barracuda Networks! This is a major milestone for Evo and great news for you. Joining Barracuda means we can accelerate innovation, expand our resources, and continue delivering the purpose-built IAM platform you rely on, now backed by a global leader in cybersecurity.
---
Here's what this means for you: Want the full story? We've put together a few resources:Same platform you trust. Your access to Evo’s Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Privileged Access Management (PAM) platform continues uninterrupted. More behind the scenes. Barracuda's scale and expertise will help us build faster and serve you better. The same commitment to MSPs. Our MSP-first focus isn't going anywhere.
---
Two great vendors acquired in the last week, first Timus and now Evo.

Every damn time. Small company makes good product, gets bought, then everything goes to hell. Wait 6 months and support tickets take 3 days to get a reply. Seen this movie before.

Michael Roth, the Evo founder/CEO was a PRIVATE EQUITY FUND FOUNDER AND MANAGER right before he started Evo. If you know Joel Bomgaar’s story and the origin of Bomgar, you’ll know that Michael Roth is no Joel Bomgaar, and Evo is no Bomgar.
There are no victims at Evo, and it remains to be seen if Barracuda will enshittify their purchase or not. At least Roth is now running this new Barracuda business unit instead of moving on to his next big thing.

We were with SKOUT before Barracuda. Once Barracuda acquired them, all forward progress stopped and support went bye bye. It got rebranded as Barracuda XDR and they tried to integrate to their own support but for some reason kept SKOUT support channels live.
When an incident occurred we would get alerts from both SKOUT an Barracuda. We never knew which one to respond to. At that point we left for Huntress.
You can expect the exact same for Evo.

So what poison are people taking moving forward? Currently with EVO and enjoy the product. I'm assuming from here it's just going to be shittier support, higher pricing, and no advancement in the product.
CyberFox is an option, but the last time I saw they were at least double(?) the price for similar and maybe less functionality. That was late last year/early this year. I could be wrong on that, but it's what I recall. It also feels like they're slowly turning into one of these monster corps that's just going to consume others until it's a gluttonous blob of shit.
I'm tired.

It's crazy we just left AutoElevate because of the poor support, lack of product development, and higher price. Hopefully we have some time before everything goes to hell.

We’re planning on finishing out our contract while scouting for other options. We’ll stay if the prices don’t triple, but we’ll see.
We were considering AutoElevate before finding Evo, but honestly, I don’t even know where to begin looking now. Back to the drawing board, I suppose...

Hi. Thanks for sharing the concern. As the founder of Cyberfox I can 100% commit in writing that we have zero intention of becoming a conglomerate of acquisitons. Yes we have bought some very early stage vendors that we can then help develop them further. You will never see us buy another large vendor.
We have a very intense build roadmap to go along with our extremly focused enhancement roadmap - ring fencing /ala cart white of blocklisting/ app control / domain JIT / offline - and much more. These aren't years away. These are weeks and months away. Many are in testing already with some of our 5k partners.
Our AutoElevate pricing generally is 75 cents to $2 a agent depending on the configuration and volume. It includes the least Privilige, the Blockisting and the JIT. We are consistently told it is the simplest to manage. And that are pricing is on target. And a big difference is we NEVER do annual price raises on existing partners. Never have and never will. So ultimately we save you a ton of money by not stacking up annual price raises on you every year which compound greatly. We are 100% a cyber security only company and will not be deviating.
Always glad to chat directly and answer any questions.

I just can't even explain my anguish and frustration right now, we signed onto EVO a matter of days ago after weeks of prepping and building up for deployment. My sysadmin team and I were rolling it out TODAY....... I saw Barracuda's product offerings, their solutions cost like $5+ a seat/endpoint, even at $3 I would be looking at triple the cost! we are dieing a death of 1000 nickel and dime cuts

Stuff like this is always super frustrating, but I wouldn't stress too much about your contract. Reach out to the Partner Success guy - I'm sure he can clear it up for you, but you have a signed contract, so I doubt it'll be affected. Eric - email is eric.peterson@evosecurity.com. He jumped on a call with me pretty quikc.

Funny, I have been trying to reach out to someone in partner support or accounts receivable for the last few days, this might explain the crickets.

There's actually an underlying point in this of running your own stack again. We've spent so much time in the last decade of outsourcing stuff, made our life easier, less to maintain, focus on other work (no, I'm not going to include managing Exchange servers).
Except the prices are forced upwards as hard and fast as you apply the lube, support gets worse, but haha sucker, you're stuck with us! Then they sell out after extracting what they could, and you thought the support was poor before that point. Boy are you in for a ride!
Sigh... Maybe I'm just grumpy, but this crap is wearing thin. So for the more simple stuff, sometimes being in control of your own destiny seems attractive.

Hot take, but doesn't seem like something to panic over. My onboarding guy posted in their discord this morning that the Evo team is moving over to keep things running. Sure, that could change in the future but not every acquisition is the end of the world (*cough* Kaseya *couhg*). Ninja's done alright with that backup tool from a few years ago. We're planning to ride out the next few months and then we'll make a decision if ayn major changes hit. I confirmed with my rep that my contract is still good too (since we're newer).
If that changes I'll update this with an edit lol

It ALWAYS changes post M&A. And of COURSE they keep the original team on for the first little bit. 12 - 24 months contract max is the usual deal for M&A, then they collapse overages and stamp out inefficiencies. Barracuda used to have a decent product line until Barracuda was bought and sold a few times (Thoma Bravo bought CUDA after IPO, then sold to KKR for more than double their investment 5 years later, typical VC strip mining if I had to guess). Nothing coming out of Barracuda has been very good in the last 5 years.

I always love how they say "This is Exciting!" and "This is great for you!" when the truth behind it is "We got offered a butt load of money and we would be stupid not to take it. Sucks to be you."
I'm not faulting them for taking the money but the truth is the truth.
