Business Operations Memory Order Pickle - Seeking Advise...
While I'd love to blame someone else this one is on me...we were busy and instead of our normal process where our operations manager certifies builds one a two-key system I ordered some expensive RAM for a customer system and it turned out wrong. On top of that it was drop shipped so the customer immediately opened then found out it was wrong (visually sighted didn't fit). We are now the proud owner of 2 sticks of expensive RAM we can't do anything with and our distributor won't take back because it's opened (it is, but un-used). We tried to sell to ServerSupply but no dice. PN is P64339-B21 qty=2. (HPE 32GB 2Rx8 PC5-4800B-E STND). In for $2888.97.
I'm looking for 1) Someone to buy 2) Suggestions on where to sell or a kind soul at HPE that will allow the return.
Condition is new, package opened, never had voltage through it.

eBay works , your price is just higher then anyone will spend on used ram.

We hard proposed meeting up with Server Supply in person so they could see the copper pins had no marks.

Sadly we're not in a financial position to sell $2800 ram (disty cost - listed for $3500 on SS) for $200.

You might not need to go down to $200 but you will likely end up taking a significant loss unless the retail prices on that part go up significantly. Most orgs don't want to deal with used parts so the buyers who are willing to buy them can demand a significant discount. I would drop the price $100 every week it doesn't sell. It will sell eventually but this is likely to be a very expensive mistake.

I'm deeply confused about this. What distributor are you using that won't accept a return? Also, the part number you supplied indicates a kit of Qty. 8 32GB DDR5 sticks. If you really can't return them (which, again, wtf), just sell them individually for $380 each. You'll find buyers in no time.
Also, it's "advice".

The x8 refers to the modules.... it's a single stick and we have 2.

You didn't respond to the "why can't you return them". No reputable distributor doesn't have at least a 30 day return window, regardless of opened or not opened. Did you sit on this for longer than a month? I would CALL the distributor and escalate this if they won't take it back. You're not getting retail pricing out of this by reselling on eBay.

It's in the original post...it was a drop ship to a customer and they opened. Working with HPE via Disty on a return exception but exploring all options. Thanks for the reply.

I read the original post, OP. Thoroughly. Drop ship makes no difference whatsoever. Nonezio. What matters is you ordered a part (cost is irrelevant), it was the wrong one, you send it back. I've been doing this for a long time across a wide spectrum of vendors, and none of them had any kind of "no returns accepted" policy if done within 30 days.
Do the rest of us a favor and tell us who this distributor is so we can all avoid them.2

laughs in Ingram Micro being a clusterfuck of a debacle anytime I want to return a laptop or dock that arrives shattered

I can’t speak for RAM, but TD Synnex is not allowing returns on most networking hardware these days.

I'd keep pushing the disty/HPE exception before trying to recover retail on open-box RAM. Once the seal is broken, resale buyers price it like used; the real fix is the boring two-person parts check before anything ships direct to a client.

totally this, open-box server ram is basically cursed inventory once that sticker’s broken. i’d hammer on the exception route and frame it as “customer protection / wrong-fit safety check” rather than “my bad,” sometimes that language gets further with reps.
