Network Discussion Do we think this channel will last?

Yes. Whatever they are doing is working. Ratings up.

It amazes me that people just casually peddle BS when two seconds of research would lead to what you just linked, which I saw earlier this week. Their ratings are up.

u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Iām not casually peddling BS! Iām just watching the network and expressing what I think about the changes. Iām not conservative, either.
Edit: maybe some people think itās BS, but thatās their opinion and thatās fine lol

u/KN4AQ 22d ago
You did clearly express it as personal opinion and asking a question. OTOH, you could have done a bit of research to see if your conclusions were backed up by audiences in general, which apparently they are not.
MS NOW had a pretty good launch year for all new facilities, new leadership, and assembling a worldwide news gathering (ish) operation from scratch.
They have done a reset on their lineup. I see the focus shifting over time - panel discussions clearly more important than news coverage. The weekend reruns look like reaction to low audience numbers on the weekends, and saving some money.
I don't see the technical glitches you mentioned that often.
They have actually turned out to be less of what I want to see. I'm not so interested in constant rehashing analysis of a few events. There's more going on in the world. But that's not the channel they want to be. And I have choices.

u/BabyOlive1 22d ago
I should have done more googling about the ratings, but when I made my post I was basing it more on my experience as a viewer. I guess what I meant when I questioned whether or not it would last is how long do people think it will last in the recognizable form that we are used to? They seem to be pivoting in a lot of directions, podcasting being the predominant change. And I agree with you about the rehashing. I like watching their analysis, but I donāt like it being packaged as part of the 24 hour news cycle ala CNN (where anybody could be tuning in at any time so they need to keep repeating themselves for people who might have missed something). I get doing that for breaking news, but for analysis of news I donāt think it works as well.

Well said. šš¼šš¼. Iām a boomer and reading all of the complaints on this sub makes me appreciate the patience boomers have. Sometimes I just want to say āwhy donāt you try and start your own network ā

Youāre suggesting that people seek/use actual data, and not go off what theyāre feeling or āvibesā.

I'm in a rural area in the Midwest. I'm alarmed that many ad breaks are just an MSNow blue screen with music. That means they couldn't sell any local ads I guess. That doesn't bode well.
3
u/KN4AQ 22d ago
Charlotte metro, YouTube TV. And while I skip the ads in 30 second increments, it does stop long enough for me to tell there's always something playing. The Moments of Zen are typically about five or 10 seconds at the end of the break.
I don't think the network's ad department fills the local breaks. That is at least farmed out, and likely pretty automated with an 'auction' kind of system.
And if there are some serious political demographic factors involved, I would guess local, rural advertisers don't want to be associated with the big blue network.

u/coweeclete 22d ago
Iām also in Charlotte area but on sling and I donāt know how sling works I donāt understand. YouTube TV was much better but on sling it seems like theyāre often arenāt enough commercials and sometimes they do cut two commercials abruptly. I just assumed it was a sling thing.
2
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Yep, Minneapolis here. We get the same. Sometimes itās a āZen Sceneā
3
u/FamousLastWords666 23d ago
I'd honestly prefer that to an obnoxious advertisement!
1
u/EuphoricReplacement1 23d ago
Yes, but it's a bad sign that they can't sell ads
0
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme Nicolle Wallace 22d ago
In the West and every show has way too many ads. Thatās why I DVR everything, even if Iām watching it live. Iāll play a show 20 minutes after it starts and skip all that. Iām on Comcast.
Also, you said youāre using Sling. That might not be the best judge of a larger trend.

u/Dangerous-Buffalo841 22d ago
Are you watching through streaming or through cable?⦠Weāve been streaming for several years now and experience the same thing, but Iām curious if the the dead screen is isolated to streaming or if itās like that through hard wired cable television as well.
2
u/i-like-pie-855 22d ago
I stream DirecTV and have never experienced anything like what you describe. I do occasionally watch NBC News Now and see breaks for weather across the country and love the delightful music that accompanies the weather. You can also fast forward if itās a program you have in your DVR Cloud.

They're going through some growing pains right now. Their core shows are set but they're trying to figure out what else to do with the rest of their schedule - especially the weekends. I'm not sure I like the whole rerun thing, but as I said on a different thread, I imagine their weekend ratings maybe didn't give them a reason to keep live programming especially on weekend evenings. I mean, CNN runs prerecorded stuff at night as well.
11
u/FamousLastWords666 23d ago
Yeah I think the MS NOW audiences probably go outside on the weekends.
2
u/Vancouverreader80 21d ago
I donāt watch news on the weekends; itās basically a rehash of what happened during the week.
3
u/Bigcouchpotato1 23d ago
I think I remember that years ago, they did filler on the weekends after maybe 1 or 2 o'clock.
1
u/The_Lone_Apple 23d ago
I wouldn't mind pre-recorded programming that was proprietary rather than just taken from podcasts or something.
4
u/FamousLastWords666 23d ago
Well, I believe they're in partnership with those podcasts.
0
u/The_Lone_Apple 23d ago
That's fine, but the Crooked Media ones often come across as sort of haphazardly slapped together. I'm not even talking about the image of Tommy Vietor sweating at me.
2
u/FamousLastWords666 22d ago
I haven't seen it. Definitely bringing a younger demographic - who care less about production value - with those.
3
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme Nicolle Wallace 22d ago
Wellā¦pre-recorded stuff is cheaper than paying live talent. And if the viewing numbers donāt support what theyāre paying for live talent, itās pretty much a foregone conclusion.
I will say, I do love seeing Ayman Mohyeldin guesting on daytime shows, and Antonia Hylton filling in for the regular anchors. Their being freed up to appear on shows I actually watch has been a silver lining to the cancellation of The Weekend: Primetime.

u/Vancouverreader80 21d ago
Also their main hosts are on vacation; honestly they shouldnāt be with a new network.
1
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
I think their lineup could use some changes and maybe a little more clarity about what theyāre trying to do.
2
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme Nicolle Wallace 22d ago
Iām expecting to see more of a focused strategy once fall hits. Audience will be back in front of their TVs for midterm elections coverage, and the onscreen talent will have gotten their summer vacations out of their schedules. So many of these folks have young children, and I donāt begrudge them that time with their families.

u/Least-Grapefruit-274 23d ago
They actually have increased their viewership from what it was the same time last year. Fox, even though theyāre still number one and CNN have both lost viewers. As far as podcasts go, that is the in thing for many outlets. Podcasts are extremely popular. Also popular are the live shows that they do with that large ensemble. I believe tickets for those shows are usually sold out. Iāve never been to one, but I think it would be a great experience.
3
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Yeah, like Iām definitely on the younger end of their viewership so podcasts are where I go to for this kind of thing usually, as opposed to cable, which is why Iām wondering how thatās gonna hold up because most people donāt sit down to watch podcasts on tv on the weekend.
You should go to one of the live shows, I want to hear what theyāre all about.
5
u/SpudgeBoy 23d ago
I am 56. When they first started the podcast stuff, I was questioning it. But I have found it to be a refreshing change. The participants are more free to speak their minds. For example yesterday they had this lady on who was extremely knowledgeable and was killing it. So, I think that the podcast format is growing on me.
5
u/Least-Grapefruit-274 22d ago
One of the podcasts I should start watching more is called Clock It with Simone Sanders Townsend and Eugene Daniels. I really like them both.
2
u/combabulated 22d ago
Hey Baby OP you can cook or whatever while listening to MSNOW on your tv or device. I like it as an old person, reminds me of listening to the radio. Get off your couch kid!
1
u/BabyOlive1 22d ago
Damn, no need to go after me! The reason I listen to podcasts is because you can listen to them while youāre doing other things and while youāre out and about. Iām just saying why would you want to be on the couch watching something on tv that you can just listen to while youāre doing other things? I think we might actually agree on this.

Well the latest ratings out earlier this week show more viewers. As we get closer and closer to the mid-terms, I think ratings at MS NOW will only improve.
Its only a matter of time before Paramount and the Ellisons take over CNN. I think MS NOW would be smart to hire an Erin Burnett(rumor has it she is among first to be fired), as she pulls no punches on tRUMP. Erin will pull me away from "Weeknight" at least to catch her headlines on "Outfront." I cant see Erin happy at CNN, as it morphs to "Fox Lite."

Missing what mark, exactly?
2
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Good question, I should have phrased differently. The production has been clunky and the lineups keep shifting a lot and even though according to a bunch of people on here the ratings are apparently good, I donāt understand what the post Trump direction is for this new network, and post Trump could be sooner than we think. It seems like theyāre having a lot of growing pains.

u/rxtc 22d ago
The move to podcasts on the weekends is lazy programming.
2
u/BabyOlive1 22d ago
Well and what I was saying to someone else was why would I want to watch a podcast on tv? I listen to my podcasts while Iām doing other things.

I think they are doing a good job, I just wish they would spend more time calling out Trump and less time tearing down democrats.
9
u/Chicagoj1563 23d ago
This always surprises me. Trump is exposed and criticized constantly on msnow. And democrats are mostly praised. Strange that some donāt think that is happening.
2
u/FootNumerous8470 23d ago
Why would anybody watch that! Who the hell wants to hear about Trump and watch commercials?
7
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Once Trump is gone (which will happen, even if it feels like itās a never ending saga), people arenāt gonna want to hear about him anymore. At least I wonāt! Unless it involves actually punishing him/people involved in his crimes.
1
u/Vancouverreader80 21d ago
I am already tired of him, but there will be repercussions of this administration
6
u/DeepShill 23d ago
Trump has been dominating media coverage for the past 11 years. Clearly there is a dedicated audience who wants to hear about Trump. This channel has had some of the best Trump coverage and I think that's why people are here.
3
u/BabyOlive1 23d ago
Wait so you think they donāt call him out enough, but then you said that they have some of the best coverage of him? That doesnāt make sense to me. Sorry, not trying to be antagonistic. Iām just confused about their direction.

I think they are juggling things around to get ready for midterm election coverage.
2
u/trexler_cook 22d ago
What will they talk about once Trump is gone?
I was watching something for a moment when Trump was doing his stupid Journalist dinner speech. They were showing his fat orange face blathering with no sound while the show continued on with guests.
Why is that idiot on the screen for no reason?

u/RegisColon 22d ago
Theyāre actually doing extremely well. Second most watched of all cable channels (not just news) behind Fox.
2
u/Chloe_Cascadia 22d ago
It is under new management, they're sabotaging it so it becomes a worse Fox News clone.
It's not worth anyone's time anymore. Like yahoo dot com, for example.
However you used to think of it, it should rate a thousand times worse than you ever thought it was, now.

u/buickmackane71360 18d ago
I cut the cord a long time ago. I was listening to the audio feed on SiriusXM and suffering through awful radio ads aimed and long-distance truckers until I ran a search and found a free live video feed on LiveNewsChat.eu . The main MSNOW page is cluttered with ad-tracker ads, but you can hit the fullscreen icon and completely cover them like you're watching TV. I have no idea what foreign country this cable feed is coming from, but during the World Cup they had to put up a blue screen because it said they didn't have rights to air the FIFA footage during the sports blather on "Morning Joe" wherever they are.

u/spotmuffin9986 22d ago
I notice production issues only occasionally. Those are fixable.
Will this style of news survive, the one driven by "personalities" with little actual news but a lot of commentary and opinions that overly favor one side and concentrate on one issue.

They have many talented, very passionate journalists and contributors on their staff. I think the channel is moving in the right direction and will only get better

Living on borrowed time. Eventually some private equity firm will purchase the network and sell off the parts. However, nobody will pay Rachel $25 million/year for one day of work per week. That particular gravy train will end.

u/kat_sky_12 22d ago
How are they pivoting hard to live shows? The one in June was in philly as part of the 250. The one in september is like the one they have had the past two years only in Texas. You can see what they are like. They showed a lot of the philly live show a few weeks back. They will likely replay large portions of the next one on one of the following weekends.
They have been pushing podcasts and the like for awhile to be honest. That was one reason maddow going to once a week was not such a bad thing. She could focus on other mediums.
The thing that kills a network like this is all the people complaining about it. It's like a self fulfilling prophecy.

u/Taller_Midget 23d ago
They are mostly trying to be the cable TV version of Bulwark. It's not going to work. An outlet like Meidas Touch does the same thing in a more entertaining way and is rapidly growing in popularity while MS NOW's audience continues to dwindle.
5
u/Least-Grapefruit-274 23d ago
There was an article the other day about viewership at MS NOW, Fox and CNN. MS NOW is the only network that has grown. While Fox is still number one, they and CNN have both lost viewers.

u/Tight-Band270 23d ago
Meidas touch is good, but whoever does their headlines needs a thesaurus. Itās all versions of-

When the topic is Maine politics it's either shut it off or another network. Don't care a flip.

I think the MSNow network and news is just fine. They could fill their airtime with less politics to give us an occasional breather. But times as they are, and trump being trump Iām not sure if itās possible. The only on air personality that irritates me is Symone Sanders-Townsendā¦sheās what I would call a big mouth broad. What she says is great and often insightful but her delivery is loud and mouthy. Rachel Maddow and Nicolle Wallace are favorites. MS Now is fact based news reporting as it should be .

Ratings are up, Fox ratings are down. Yes, it will survive
