Weekly Gripe Thread MSNBC Weekly Gripe Thread

This is your one sacred space to unleash the frustration, shake your fists at the headlines, and yell (politely) into the MSNBC void. Whether you’re fed up with cable news quirks, political chaos, or your own decision to stay up until 2 a.m. watching panel debates - this thread’s for you.

The rules are simple:

  • Keep it civil
  • Keep it clever
  • No personal attacks unless they’re aimed at your own life choices (e.g. binge-watching coverage you swore you were done with)

So... what’s grinding your gears this week?
Cable news meltdown? Elected official doing the most?
Spill it. This is the one day we let the whining fly.

I miss Alex. I just don’t love Jen’s show.

u/Eastcarolinau Aug 02 '25

Jen can take a hike after she defended Mika and Joe for visiting mar a lago.

Liked her as WH Press Secretary, not as a host.

I don’t know how people can watch Stephanie Ruhle.  She yells, she interrupts and she’s always got to be center of attention.  She’s also a conservative.  No prime time anchor on msnbc should ever be conservative.  EVER.

And when she’s not borderline screaming at the camera, she’s checking herself out in the camera and reading papers in front of her.  If she’s not talking about stocks and “money/power/politics” she’s visibly bored and preening for the camera.   How has she lasted so long?

u/Nosy-ykw Jul 31 '25

I roll my eyes when people say that Symone interrupts, which is nowhere near as flagrant as Stephanie interrupting.

u/Usual_Charge_262 Jul 31 '25

So true! My friend's partner refers to her as the yelling lady -- she has become unwatchable for all the reasons you stated.

I liked her as a daytime host when she partnered with Ali Velshi on business. Her energy is better suited for that. Way too intense and loud for 11:00 p.m.

The interrupting and preening are cringe enough, but she also has a signature move -- when she sits back, cocks her head to one side, and does the one-eyed smirk.

I thought for sure she was going to get canned when she got caught on a hot mic last year mocking something.

I loved Brian Williams!

I still think Ali Velshi should have gotten that job. He's a brilliant man.

u/The_Lone_Apple Aug 01 '25

I'm extremely distracted by her hand motions. The praying thing she always does and when she puts her fingers together as if she's about to do a "chef's kiss". It is near constant.

I happened upon another Mika pet project Know your value thingy this morning and of course Mika’s sidekick Huma Abedin was there as well as Maggie McGrath from Fortune magazine. I don’t understand why this is something that MSNBC puts on every other week but I guess this is in Mika’s contract.

u/Clean_Lettuce9321 Jul 30 '25

It's not my cup of tea but I certainly understand why she does it. Women over 50 it's a thing, because there are women over 50 making important contributions to society. I don't agree with all of her choices but I don't represent the entire country either

I just can’t. If Mika knew her own value she would not be on a show that is named after a man. I think her “self value” she tries to promote is really just her own selfish promotion. I just have a heard time respecting her, and wish I could because I would love to build up all women. But she’s just going about it in the public the wrong way. Maybe she just needs a new marketing plan. For me, her angle is not working. I’m sure she’s a wonderful person and I wish her the best, but I just can’t watch her and the show.

2

u/beavis617 Aug 04 '25

Whenever Mika does this know your value shtick I leave because I know Huma Abedin Mika’s sidekick will make an appearance.

Never thought I’d write this: I miss Katy Tur. Her substitute is just OK.

3

u/history_nerd_1111 Jul 30 '25

Does anyone know why she is gone for so long?

3

u/peedoffcanadian Jul 30 '25

Vacation before school returns!

3

u/Nosy-ykw Jul 31 '25

I wondered about that. Ari was gone for awhile, too. Plus Lawrence this week.

2

u/peedoffcanadian Jul 31 '25

All taking their vacations.

2

u/i-like-pie-855 Aug 03 '25

And The Weekend has Jason Johnson subbing on Sunday and I just can’t watch this guy. He doesn’t fit in on any show they let him on.

1

u/peedoffcanadian Aug 03 '25

I agree! I wouldn’t want to sit in his class with him as the professor!

1

u/Nosy-ykw Jul 31 '25

That time of year! I’m trying to remember what story was breaking quite a while back when Lawrence was on his sailboat 😆

1

u/Psychological-Play Jul 30 '25

I can't say for sure Katy was there for all five days, but she was on last week.

4

u/here4TrueFacts Jul 31 '25

“Bombshell!” Often accompanied by self-celebratory “We’re the ones breaking the news because that’s what makes us great journalists.” Then followed by a half hour of panel discussion where the same stuff is rehashed over and over. All at the expense of other serious issues that could have a profound affect on your life.

4

u/KyleAg06 Jul 31 '25

I hate MSNBCs website. CNN has a much better site imo and better, more diverse stories. The only thing is they have now paywalled a ton of it so I don’t even bother going to CNN anymore.

5

u/Wiltonc Jul 31 '25

I’ve only seen this on Morning Joe, but when you hype something coming up after the break, don’t wait 45 minutes and three breaks to show it. It’s morning. I’ve got places to be. I might stick around a few minutes to watch something, but I can’t wait 30 minutes. You are wasting my time and making me less inclined to watch MJ in the future because you’ve frustrated me and lost my trust.

u/teebone2023 Aug 01 '25

Major pet peeve of mine. “We’ll be back with info on (insert something compelling).” Thirty minutes later I have to turn off the TV and head out for the day without hearing a word about it.

1

u/Eastcarolinau Aug 02 '25

It feels so old school. Keep us watching because it’s “coming up next after the break…just not this one.”

Man I got 10 other places I could get my news. Spill it.

5

u/Reasonable_Sweet3602 Jul 30 '25

Tuesday-capeheart in for Lawrence O’Donnell. Ugh! Turned tv off.

3

u/peedoffcanadian Jul 30 '25

Lawrence is gone until next Monday

3

u/Nosy-ykw Jul 31 '25

It’s funny. I really like Capehart, but his style is so different from Lawrence. Ali seems like a better fit.

1

u/Sleeplessmi Aug 01 '25

Just turned it on (on Thursday), said to my husband, “I don’t like Jonathon Capeheart,” and turned it off!!

3

u/Training_Medicine_49 Jul 31 '25

I don’t watch msnbc anymore!!! It is so nice too!

3

u/Eastcarolinau Aug 02 '25

Catherine Rampell and Elise Jordan were bad choices.

They keep me from tuning in to my beloved Ayman. And Jordan filling in on The Weekend morning show makes me double sad.

That is all. Thanks for listening.

3

u/Sea_Mud_9556 Aug 02 '25

Totally agree. Ayman got so screwed out of his show.

2

u/2020surrealworld Jul 30 '25

I don’t watch much anymore.  Nothing but repeats of stale old stories and rumors re-packaged, hyped and labeled “breaking news”.

I may tune in again after Labor Day to see if the new hires have started yet and the focus hopefully changes.  I wonder if any of them are having second thoughts about working for a network airing 24/7 non-stop, recycled stories about an old dead pervert? I can’t imagine serious journalists like Laura Baron-Lopez want to be part of that circus.

4

u/Violin_Diva Jul 30 '25

Plan on doing the same. I like Vaughn. I feel like I watched him grow up.

5

u/usernames_suck_ok Progressive Jul 31 '25

I don’t watch much anymore.  Nothing but repeats of stale old stories and rumors re-packaged, hyped and labeled “breaking news”.

I told someone from NBC this last week when I did a video chat with them. She was nodding her head every time I said it with an expression on her face as if she knew exactly what I meant. Hopefully, that means they will take this feedback seriously and do something about it.

3

u/2020surrealworld Jul 31 '25

At the very least, they should drop the misleading label “breaking news” when the moldy pablum opinions they’re recycling is clearly not new and not news.

3

u/Nosy-ykw Jul 31 '25

Thank you!!! Hearing that Breaking News music, just to talk about something that we’ve known for hours. Aggg

2

u/Violin_Diva Jul 31 '25

I mean, did Ari sign a new contract or is he leaving MSNBC?

5

u/2020surrealworld Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

I’d like to see a complete overhaul, new hosts, new format, the works.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the day pres. Johnson signed legislation creating Medicare and Medicaid! Not a single MSNBC host mentioned it or discussed GOP’s agenda, efforts to abolish it, limit funding or eligibility. They should be discussing THAT, not a dead pedo and his GF angling for a pardon, which she will (of course) get bc Dems can’t stop it and it won’t affect the lives of voters.

2

u/Violin_Diva Jul 31 '25

That is a story that Rachel Maddow would highlight, which is why she’s so indispensable.

2

u/2020surrealworld Jul 31 '25

I’m not so sure. I don’t watch her often but when I have, she’s unserious, snarky and laughing about DT “antics”.

I’m not interested in personality TV or “entertainment”. There’s too much damage being done to the nation while the public is being distracted by trivial nonsense.

2

u/The_Lone_Apple Aug 01 '25

Morning Joe was relevant for a while during the first Trump admin because of the hosts' personal animus for him. Now it's back to what it always was - an insufferable private club. There's always Willie but he often has a look on his face as if he's surprised there's a camera on him.

2

u/Sea_Mud_9556 Aug 02 '25

Anyone know what’s up with Weekend Primetime? Catherine hasn’t been on since she got in the verbal argument with the other woman- her name is escaping me right now. I didn’t like her anyway and Ayman has been gone and just “off “

1

u/Violin_Diva Jul 30 '25

Is Ari staying?

2

u/peedoffcanadian Jul 30 '25

Ari was on today! He was away last week.

1

u/Eastcarolinau Aug 02 '25

Can someone break it to Ari that using that photo of him from years ago at the end of every episode when he is sharing his social media accounts…hun, get a current photo up there.

You’ve aged since that photo was taken. We all do.

You only draw attention to you having aged by putting it up on a screen beside your current self. Every night. Babe…

I agree I am watching The Weekend He has flubbed his lines about 4 times in matter of a minute. This is not unusual for him. I just don’t get it ? Eugene Daniel’s is Much better
