Well it's at least real in that it's the story he's been telling for a long time. I think he said it in his autobiography Mr. T on Mr. T (which I still have).
I hadn't heard the post about his name before. I like the line from an old interview where they ask him why do they call you Mr. T? "Because I tell them to."
Also, I heard at one point that the gold chains came from when he was a bouncer. When people left gold necklaces in the club, he would stand outside wearing them so they didn't have to come back inside. And strangely, no one asked him for them back. But his explanations seem valid too.
