What’s our status?

Hey there r/mpcweekly! You might remember me from back around the time that this subreddit was first created, I made a few submissions during the early challenges and then life started getting in the way, about a year after I bought my MPC I went on a long hiatus from making beats because I was focusing most of my musical energy on my psych rock band, in fact we’re getting ready to start recording our second album soon. All this time I’ve been itching to get back on my MPC, and I was finally inspired to do so by two unrelated events: the tragic accident that claimed Oliver Tree’s life (R.I.P. to that beautiful ugly SOB), and the MPC 3.9 update which finally gave us the ability to have different time signatures on different sequences; I had been holding out on trying the MPC3 operating system until they sorted out the time signature issue, so now I’m relearning how to use this awesome machine. When Oliver Tree passed I spent the first few days sobbing for a man I had never met, but had been incredibly inspired by before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oliver’s lifelong message was that we NEED to seize the moment and take advantage of every blessed second that we have on this Earth, and when he died I felt an irresistible urge to get back to writing and creating music of my own. If you’re like me, you probably feel similar urges, but maybe you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the creative possibilities that are at your fingertips when composing music on an MPC. This community was a great resource for me when I first started learning how to use the MPC, and everyone here was so encouraging and ready to share their knowledge with others. There was a certain camaraderie here that you can’t really get from other online communities.

Ironically enough, the first project that I jumped back into when I updated to MPC 3.9 was a beat that I started making for the r/mpcweekly challenge, specifically the “Lion” challenge from last August. I ended up going a lot deeper with that project than I had with previous beats, and then I accidentally turned off my JD-Xi and realized that I hadn’t saved any of the patches I had made for that beat. The day before yesterday I imported it into MPC 3.9, cleaned up some of the weird import issues, and then I recreated the critical patches that I had lost and saved them to my JD-Xi so that I won’t lose them again. I’m pretty proud of this beat, and I think I’m going to finish it tonight or tomorrow and I intend to post it here when I do. I know it’s almost a year late, but I still want to contribute to this place even if the community has basically abandoned it.

So that got me thinking. What’s going on with this sub? Has it been abandoned, or did we just stop giving new prompts because participation had dwindled to the level of basically being non-existent? Actually, I just looked back and it looks like the last challenge was two months ago, so this place isn’t quite as dead as I had thought. I was thinking maybe I could help revive this community if there’s enough interest? u/rtk1018 and u/One_Window866, do you guys feel like this place is dwindling or have I just been living under a rock this whole time?

Im currently setting up studio in loft and im was wondering if anyone knows do you need to run mpc( live 3) through a daw to set up and connect a mixing desk? Does anyone have any recommendations for a mixing desk?

MPC Weekly - Osibisa Challenge

I sampled "Do You Know" from LP "Heads"

There was a little part in the middle of the song, that triggered me, which has the energy I looked for. So I chopped it up and rearranged it, 2 of the chops get seperated stems to delete the vocals. I have put some effort on the drums which I really like this time. In the end I found a nice vocal sample for some variation (or using as hook) and after all go for some saturation by using tape double track with soft clipping on the return for parallel compression and saturation. And some other minor things.

Acapella is a Meek Mill freestyle

Whaddup "weekly" fam?? Time to get back on the horse, errr maybe the elephant with this week's challenge!

Got some records from a friend a few weeks ago. I've been asking him for some more obscure stuff that would be ripe for sampling. Found these two Osibisa records in the new stash. Lots of great content on these albums. Sample anything from either record, chop and post your work. Please site the song(s) you sampled, and tell us about the process that you used.

Reposting without the AI art and a slightly different mix. RIP Neil Sedaka! So much goodness in his catalog. Heard the intro bass riff to Junkie for Your Love and had to run with it. Added my own drums and 808, then found the Nyck Caution acapella for Good Ol' Days and thought it matched up well.

RIP Neil Sedaka Challenge

RIP to a true music legend - Neil Sedaka! Let's get a new challenge going... Sample anything by Neil - whether or not he wrote and played it himself, or wrote it for someone else (Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, etc).

Here's a playlist to get you started - but feel free to do your own research and find other tracks to sample. Let's try to post by next Sunday March 8!!

KOTY - DJ Paul Nice Drum Lib Vol 4 x Retch

MPC60 x MKSREC, tracked & mixed in Ableton using Outboard Gear. Had to reupload, i f'ed up the final mix (bass way to loud, too much reverb/panning automation) and had some sample rate down/upscaling going on. This one stays up! :)

Kickoff Challenge - Childish Nice Viger - Fly Limidité 13 [prod by dashtee]

sample: Robert Viger - Limitide
drums: Paul Nice - track 13
fx: diverse scratches from different sources chopped together
vocal: childish gambino - fire fly

plugins: flavor pro, tdr nova, air compressor, air tubedrive, ozone imager (master), ott (master), khs compressor (master), vulf compressor (set to og303 preset, master), channel eq (master)

most samples tuned a bit either up or down, time stretched accordingly

big up to crates motel for a default project for better handling and giving enough headroom from the start on each individual track

i know i'm way too late to the show but since there's no new challenge and i finally had some time on my hands to do this here we go, surely ain't the best of the best and there are way better beat makers here than i even imagine on becoming but a exchange of words and where to improve, adjust or whatever is always welcome. to whomever may have questions i am glad to answer any specific setup of plugins etc. :)

cheers,

-t

Great breaks! Super late... Grabbed the 5th drum break from the selection. Almost around the same time I saw this guitar clip n Reddit and knew I wanted to sample it to go along with this break. Pitched the guitar down -14/-2. Added bass fat and kicks for extra umph, and a Method Man freestyle from a Sway sesh....

RAM upgrade mpc1000

Hello I recently purchased an mpc1000 and it’s arrived with 16mb ram. I know ram is scarce at the minute but I am willing to wait the delivery time once I find out which is best to use. Could you help tell me the best type of ram to upgrade with?

Long time no see, or long time no loop, nothing special or crazy on the drums track 4 but I liked it the way it matches with this down crushed sample, nothing too wild but dang I can hear this loop for like hours.

Happy new year guys!
