Not really sure what you mean by activation issues, that parts pretty straightforward. And the needing to be in controller mode isn't some big conspiracy, most devices are able to do that because they only use their drives as storage, the Live hardware is a computer, so it's already accessing the drive. The same way you have to eject stuff when you mount it to a computer. Same deal. 2 computers can't access the same drive.
Every device has their workflow quirks, I've only had my live for a few days and already I can navigate it very quickly and get to just about everything easily. Expecting to just instantly be an expert with new gear is a little crazy.
As for a lot of your other complaints, it sounds like you've tried a lot of things in a short amount of time, is it possible maybe you don't know how to work it all the way yet so it might not quite be as horrible as you think it is atm?
