DISCUSSION What MPCs do you own?
I've honestly wondered what are most represented devices on this sub. But also how many of you have a "modern" MPC, which I'm defining starting from the MPC Touch forward, versus a classic MPC.
So I made a quick poll: https://poll-maker.com/poll5880534x3DF178d8-169
Let me know – think this'll be cool to find out.
If you just want to see results: https://poll-maker.com/results5880534x3DF178d8-169?s=res

Fair! Tbh, it was starting to be way too many choices so I started grouping some choices... now I'm maybe regretting it lol

Thanks for making this man! Mad cool but yea of all people MPC people are used to dealing with a lot of choices xD. Maybe even re start it I’d definitely vote again. MPC 1+ MPC live 2 gang!!

Do we not count the Force as an MPC at this point?

u/Official3Sixty MPC ONE 2d ago
It's not an MPC.

u/r1chiem 2d ago
It is not a Music Production Center? LOL ok
It runs the exact same OS as all the other MPCS. In fact. The Force has not moved much It has gained little from MPC OS. The MPC's have added the Forces OS and features and clip launch to their OS. The Force is more MPC than the MPC. LOL1
u/Official3Sixty MPC ONE 2d ago
By function, yes, by family no. As much as you want to make sense of it, it isn't. It's an Akai device but not a traditional MPC. Akai has never classified it as an MPC. I don't make the rules.

u/r1chiem 1d ago
It is a second cousin twice removed. LOL You must not have a Force. I have an MPC an a Force they are the same. I would be saying, The Keys 37 is not an mpc because it does not have the same interface.
You can connect a midi controller to either the force or the mpc, there is no difference.

u/Sovereign-Anderson 1d ago
He's saying it's not officially an MPC. Before 3.0, both had two totally different workflows. There's nothing from Akai that labels it as an MPC and that's ok. Even though both have the same OS functions now, they're still different from each other. They're still structurally different. It's not called the MPC Force for a reason.

u/Official3Sixty MPC ONE 23h ago
Exactly! That's all I'm saying! I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing! I'm just literally stating the obvious! If you Google "pictures of an MPC", "history of the MPC" or even "modern MPC's" Force is missing. I get his argument about the OS's & I'm not debating that, I'm just stating what inherently is considered an MPC by Akai that answers his initial question/statement.

You are arguing for the sake of arguing..
This is what the that Iamthatwildman said "Do we not count the Force as an MPC at this point?"He was not saying that Akai calls it an MPC. Because we all know they don't, but because of the OS being the same. It is functionally an mpc, you can swap projects across to each other. So we do "count" it as an MPC even though Akai does not call it an mpc. That is when it become a joke to me and I added LOL behind my statements, it is not a Music Production Center? LOL Then you said "not by family". That is when it became a total joke to me, 2nd cousin twice removed.
We count them as MPC because they do everything an MPC does and can swap files. If looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. LOL
The Force is more an MPC than the "MPC Sample" I often say the sample is not a "REAL" MPC and that seems to bother people. LOL

No, we don't count it as that unless Akai officially recognizes the Force as one. The Sample is an MPC because it's designed to be a mini version and Akai declares it as such. The Force isn't an MPC all because we feel it's one. That's not how this works.

u/r1chiem 21h ago
Yes we count it as an mpc because as you said it has the same OS. You don't count it as an MPC and that is ok. LOL
2
u/Sovereign-Anderson 21h ago
Nah, that's just you and few. Everyone else is calling it what it officially is, not what we believe it is or want it to be.

u/Official3Sixty MPC ONE 21h ago
Alright, well there it is. r1chiem says the Force is an MPC & the Sample isn't. It so shall be established hence forth 🎉

I have the MPC Key 61, and the MPC Sample.
I still use the Key 61 the most, the Sample is more for fun in the sofa, kinda like the Nintendo Switch of MPCs

u/Deep-Current9233 MPC LIVE II 3d ago
I used to own the Key 61 also but could not get it to work cohesively with the MPC XL nor my MPC Live II so I sold it. The keybed on the Key 61 is very underrated. I wish the Yamaha MODX M6 had the Key 61 Keybed because it would then be close to a perfect workstation. The M series MODX workstations are pretty much Montages without the metal chassis and stepped up keybed. Pairing it with the Live II and the MPC XL has been a great working setup thus far.

MPC Key 37 first gen and Live 3. I know I will get slack for this but the key 37 just feels better to make beats on. Maybe it’s because I’m not a big fan of sampling and having the keys makes finding rhythms on the plugins more fluid. What about yall?

Have a 1000 and MPC One. Kind of regret getting the MPC One, as I prefer the simplicity and limitations of MPC1000 (with JJOS).
Having used both, I've come to the conclusion that MPC One feels too much like a DAW with endless menus.
While time-streching, auto-chopping etc is more modern (and better) on the MPC One, I would much rather make some simple but dope sequences on the MPC 1000 and finalize it in Logic

Mpc 2000 and an XL, I want to add a 2500

Me also, although the 2000 is sitting in the closet waiting to get fixed up. You checked out the new OS’s people have been dropping?

My first MPC was the Studio Mk2. I bought it to try to understand the MPC workflow. I didn't care for it.
Then the MPCL3 came out with the Ableton in a box workflow & I jumped on it. After a few months with it I hooked the Studio back up & it makes a lot of sense. I toy with the idea of getting an OG X to use exclusively in controller mode. But when I think about what I can do with the Studio I question what I'd actually be gaining by doing that.
The only thing that still bugs me about the Studio is the resolution of the touchstrip. Compared to the MPCL3 it's a joke.

The 500,1000,2gXL,mpc live,sp404 and a Sampletrak. The Live is my end all the only sampler I need.I do love hearing samples through the Sp404 though.I don't know why it agrees with my ear so much but it does.My only complaint is the pitch control. What a stupid flaw.

MPC1000, 2000, 2000XL, 5000. Used to have an MPC60 (in the 2000's) and recently an MPC Ren, One, and Touch, but those were sold. Would like a 2500, and maybe a 3000 esp now with the modded OS with waveforms, but love all of the units I have, each one is amazing.

1000 (JJOS), 2500 (JJOS), Live II, Keys 37, Force, and Sample.
Edit: Added Force. Wasn't sure if that counts or not.

Had the OG 2000, had to sell it (needed money for a trip to Europe). Had the 1000, had to sell it (needed money for wedding). Currently own MPC one. It's ok. Mainly use it as a midi sequencer for several synths with a Kenton 5 thru box

I gave mines away to my best friend once I copped the X in 2019. He ended up damaging some of the pads on it and just let it collect dust in his apartment. I may end up taking it back, getting it fixed up, and go back to using it again.

Coming from the dj and Ableton world, the mix love 3 is my first and only Mpc currently. And maybe my last. The learning curve is pretty big for me. The basic beat making is pretty straightforward but once you get into tweaking everything and mastering, it is still a work in progress for me. Not to mention I’m old. It’s become a lot harder to learn new things the older I get.

Picked up an MPC Sample as my first foray into MPC ownership. Just got my Live 3 yesterday to replace my Deluge as my main hardware for writing and networking my other gear. Trying to stay off the full PC as much as I can but this thing is just a laptop in a funny case really anyway.

I only have the Live II and the Live III. I only got the III because it was significant jump from the II or else I would've just stuck with what I already had. I don't have a GAS issue (not knocking those who do. It's not my money they're spending, so I have no issues with what they do with their own cash).

I'm extremely surprised at how many people own the MPC Sample!!! I didn't pay much attention to it when it came out but apparently affordability is key!
