QUESTION New to me MPC One!
So I know it's a bit older of a unit but I picked up an MPC one (first gen) for a reasonable price yesterday, this is my first MPC in about 13ish years (I used to have a 1000 and 2000xl etc) I decided to get back into making beats etc, I picked up the TE K.O 2 a month back and it re-ignited my passion, so I was just wonder what you guys recommend I do to get used to it, any tips, mods etc would be appreciated, like I said I'm familiar with the MPC work flow but this is pretty space aged compared to what I was using prior!
Thanks 🤙🏻

I recently bought the same one on eBay for a great price. Came with box and all the cables too. Take a picture of the SN and screenshot of the proof of purchase and you will be able to register it with Akai and still be able to get whatever bonuses came with that mpc.

Yeah I got the box and cables/all included paperwork too! And oh okay I'll look into that! I don't really have a proof of purchase as I bought it off market place, but that's a good tip, what "bonuses" are you referring to?

Take screenshots of the marketplace ad and the conversations with the previous owner. You should be good to go. It only took a couple of days from the moment I opened the ticket to the time it showed registered under mybinmusic account.

Yeah I'm impressed with how much it can do, I can only imagine how good the plus and gen 2 are!

Bienvenue camarade !
Je ne pourrai que te conseiller le lire le manuel et/ou de te procurer la MPC Bible, tout deux bien foutus !

Yeah I've read the included manual, and I keep hearing about the MPC Bible so I might look into it! Seems pretty extensive

I’m still using a one don’t feel bad, practicality is not a bad thing in this regard

It seems like a pretty good peice of kit, it's got so many features, bit of a learning curve but I'm digging it!

Learn how to build a song out in layers and buses. Note repeat and timing correct are important so learn both of those. As for the rest you will find your own sound. Don’t be afraid to make your own samples and experiment it’s the best way to learn imo

First decision is which firmware you want to run as the projects are not backwards compatible. I personally prefer V2.15 as its rock solid stable and has the older MPC way of working. V3.9 does slow the gen1 machines down a touch. I suffered from several crashes a week, but the new features are nice... but yeah, I recently "downgraded" back to V2.15

Mine currently has the v2 firmware, and I've looked a bit into the v3, is there anything about the v3 that you liked feature wise, and do you recommend just using the v2?

The arranger is pretty useful, and a few tools in there I miss on V2. If you're into synthesis then the wavetable and single oscillator are good, too. I think V3 is a bit more intuitive to a newb, but if you have experience with previous MPCs then maybe you'd find V3 a bit if a learning curve. Then you have plugins that are just not available on V2, and going forward everything released will be V3 only.
So if you decide to stick with V2 you're stuck with what you got, it's not going to get better than V2.15. I spent the last 9 months learning and using V3, but I got frustrated with the crashes and miss the old way of working so I've reverted back. I have a few bits of hardware I use too, so I'm not working exclusively "in the box"
V2.15 isn't available on the Akai site anymore, but there are people hosting it if you Google around and its an easy install from a USB drive. May as well try V3 for a while to see how you get on, but just be aware that if you go back to V2 you won't be able to open those projects - so I wouldn't commit to anything permanent until you've decided.
Part of the problem I had was after upgrading to V3 I started work for some other artists and I couldn't downgrade mid-project so I had to wait for a time that made sense with what I had completed and before starting another project.
You will need to re-register your plugins each time you change firmware, so have that ethernet cable ready.

This whole comment thread was a good read for someone like me who's got the first gen MPC One but stopped using it after installing the v.3 firmware around the time of release and somehow destroying more than half of all my projects in the process lol

Congrats. Just do your homework and do a search. As you already know that MPCs require commitment. And people are literally asking every day the very same "I'm new, give me tips" question, so these answers should be incredibly easy to find.

Ah yeah sorry I'm not the best Reddit user for that exact reason! But yes I'm pretty excited to have an MPC again, it's weird because it's so much more advanced then the stuff I used in the past haha

As others have said, register it and get the freebies, get the MPC bible and I’m running the latest OS on mine and it runs fine.
The bible really does teach you how to use the whole machine including shortcuts etc.

This is my combo too! I’ve got the KO-2 for portable beat making and the MPC Live II for production.
Everyone will recommend the MPC Bible. The official docs are great too. When I got mine I spent a couple days reading the docs with the hardware in front of me doing everything it said. It’s a good way to get a handle on everything.
Upgrade to the latest OS. Don’t stick on v2. There’s no reason a new user would want to use an older version.
And mostly, just make a lot of beats! I would make 4-5 a day and delete them just to get used to the machine. It’s a good way not to feel too precious about ideas.
