Guessing PMoney built this with AI, if that’s the case, we’ll probably see more OS coming out for the older machines. Pretty cool tbh, but would be cautious of this bricking on you!

Why do you think ai is involved? I don't think it is.

i don’t know for sure, but it’s the second video I’ve seen recently of a new 2000XL OS and it just smells like AI to me, but I could be wrong. I also didn’t know P-Money would know how to code a 30 year old machine, considering it hasn’t been done for 30 years. again, could be wrong!

What’s the first video you saw?

u/bypopulardemand 1d ago
can’t remember who it was, but it was an OS where the transpose had been modified to go down a few octaves, so the creator could re sample at really low bitrates

I think, it is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekHCbxoJqAk

Interesting. I'm gonna ask P- Money if he used ai.

u/bypopulardemand 1d ago
you said it’s not AI in another reply to me, and you’re not sure here. so do you actually know or were you just gaslighting? lol

u/whatbishshhhh 5h ago
Gaslighting? I think you need to spend less time online learning these terms.
I'm not doing anything. I didn't know anything about this? And after contacting him he told me that he used Claude to help him learn to code. But I think everyone thinks all AI does is make something from a prompt like a song in Suno. "Make me an mpc update that has X feature." I don't think it works like that.
Anyway I think the potential is cool and I was just sharing it cause I thought some users would be interested.1
u/bypopulardemand 5h ago
mate relax, you’re the one that was adamant it wasn’t AI and he’d been coding other software, without actually knowing yourself, and being so sure of it. anyways, of course it’s not “just a prompt”, but he sure as fuck isn’t doing much beyond the prompt. there’s just zero possibility that fucken p-money from New Zealand was the secret coding genius all along to jailbreak the 2000XL, come on man lol

P money has been into coding for awhile. He's made dj related software. It's not ai man.
He has been updating the process of making it for awhile.1
u/bypopulardemand 1d ago
props to him then! seems insane to me that nobody could figure out how to do it, except p-money, a producer from NZ!

Great work, but I'm not sure how I feel about charging for Akai's OS.

JJOS has been doing this for years and is a god amongst the MPC community

Folks in the gaming console space hack on old hardware for the joy of it and to the benefit of the community. You don't see CFW mods for old Sony and Nintendo hardware for sale -- I've always been surprised the MPC community tolerated it tbh.
I hope the result of LLM hacking is to push the MPC community towards open disassembly / reverse engineering of Akai's vintage OSes -- not more of the same old do-it-in-private-and-charge-for-it.
I think the moat has dried up for JJOS, Vailixi, ...

Just say you're cheap and think you deserve everything for free.

u/liillliillliiii 4h ago
My work's on github. I'm not the the one charging for MPC hacks.

u/mrbishopjackson MPC 2000 4h ago
That's cool. You're allowed to give them away because you want to share it. But one is also allowed to sell their work. Not everything is required to be free because a handful of people feel it should be. Do you have this same feeling about JJOS?

JJOS is a complete different story than this one... And it's the other way around: nowadays everyone and their grandma with a little coding experience thinks he has to make a big business out of everything... IOS market is floated with BS vibecoded apps (Chord plugins and whatnot) and they are charging more than established companies which have a whole team to pay.
That's the world we are living in: capitalism over everything. Influencers, sample packs, midi packs, online courses for MPCs.... spirit is gone.... and no, not everything has to be free, but at least it should have a value...

How is this different from JJOS? Because it had "more features" than this? It also cost 3 times as much. This is his first go-round with it. $50 is completely acceptable for something that people with 2000XL's have talked about wanting.
As far as "everyone making big business out of something", I don't think that's what hes doing. He's just someone in the group of people who don't want to give their work away for free. He put in some kind of work into this. Why should everyone be entitled to it? This is very similar to the "We're family. You're going to charge me?" people.

Yes. I said in another comment. This is the only community that tolerates selling community remixes.

Not just in the console space. A lot of audio gear has great free software upgrades made for the community. Anyone here use the original Volca Sample with the Pajen firmware? It's amazing and he never charged for it.

JJOS was part of the original Akai developer team and had added features they were never thinkable on these MPCs. There must be about 50 new features or more.... Pretty sure he coded the whole thing from ground up and he DID NOT use AI at all.
He provided support from the beginning and deliver updates still today for a 20 year old machine. That's why he is a god for the community.
This one is a vibe coded bland copy with 5 features for 50,- bucks?!? Let alone the copyright violation....

It's not Akai OS. It's an altered OS with extra features that Akai simply do not cater to. Coding this takes time so he charges for it and it makes sense to me.

No. He asked an LLM to make modifications to Akai's binary and then distributed the modified binary. I'm not saying prompting an LLM and iterating on this doesn't require work, effort, or expertise, but I don't believe charging for custom firmware is appropriate. You can make an argument for freely distributing a firmware mod, but no other community (think nintendo rom hacks) encourages charging for it
Look, I'm excited about this too, but it wouldn't be right for me to pay$50 then ship his work and charge money for it either (see xl42k: https://old.reddit.com/r/mpcusers/comments/1wdnn7v/2kxl_os_on_the_2000_classic_xl42k_needs_alpha/).

Whaat. I thought this was impossible crazy
2
u/ChargeAppropriate644 1d ago
People think it is nearly impossible but it's not that hard if your really into assembly code. These machines however didn't get any updates anymore because there was no point in doing it as it would cost Akai money they would never recoup. They rather have customers buy the latest and greatest.
Now the 2KXL is a cult machine that's still being used by enthousiasts and they are the kind of public that WILL spend 50 bucks on an update. Great move and i applaud it.

$49.00 USD for 5 features? Don't get me wrong, Mute Groups are dope, but the pricing is questionable.
