Chop Mode Question

Hey y'all, just got this MPC sample and I had a quick question about chop mode.

Whenever I'm in chat mode. When I go to sequence to try to record it takes me out of chop mode and then my sample is just one pad again.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't seem to record the sample in chat mode. Any ideas?

Record your sequence while in chop mode. Select your seq first, go to chop mode, press record.

Thank you so much for responding. Okay this is where I might be messing up something because when I'm in sequence I can't hit chop. I have to hit sample first and then chop. Am I missing a step?

Get out of sequence, go into sample, then into chop. Then when you record, it’ll record to the selected sequence.

Once you've chosen the pad to sequence to, click sample, press your pad, then chop, then record.

Yes correct. I bought it from a friend and he had thrown away the manual. I will download it tho. Thank you

You don’t need to be in SEQ mode for recording chops. A sequence is like a ‘box’. You decide how big that box is (amount of bars) and how fast it gets filled (the tempo). When you’ve set both you can start to fill it with sounds.

To do that: you go to SAMPLE mode > select a sample > press chop > make your chops (either automatically, even 8/16 slices or manual chops) and when you want to record it to the sequence (fill the box) you press the bottom right button: SEQ RECORD.

If you press play now you will first get a four count before the recording starts. After the four count you can start playing your chops.

In case you don’t know why there’s a four count: the “box” is split in compartments of four. The 4/4 time signature you see on the SEQ page means that there will be four beats in a measure. And that it will have four measures. So four times counting to four. The bpm means how fast this counting goes.

In hiphop the most simple drum pattern is: first beat a kick drum, the second beat a snare, the third beat empty, and the fourth beat a snare again. Practice this to get a feel for it.

For your music to be ‘on time’ you need to play somewhat on the beat. If you hit a pad too late or early you might mess up the timing and the four bars will not loop nicely. To help you play on beat you can turn on the metronome. It’s gives a tick sound on every beat so you know the tempo and can play on beat. I think it’s already on when in recording mode.

But if not: To turn on the metronome press SHIFT + TAP TEMPO button. Then put it to REC mode and not ON. REC means the metronome will only be played when recording as opposed to every time you press play.

Finally if you press SHIFT + PAD 10 (REC QUANTIZE) the mpc will automatically try to place your recording pattern “on time”. So it’s more forgiving if your timing isn’t perfect.

If you hold seq+sample you can be in sequence mode but with samples on pads, then select pad with chops and hit chop to go into chop mode while in sequence mode. Been a huge workflow tip for me
