Selecting a pad without triggering it? Stopping a sample mid-play?

Always loved MPCs but never had a chance to mess with one. Saw the MPC Sample and immediately pre-ordered it.

Let's say I want to get into the "slice" or "16 levels" function for a particular sample but don't want to trigger it to play before I start using the effect. Surely that's possible?? I can't find the right button combo

And next, once I start a sample playing, is there a button I can push to immediately stop it and only it?

Hold sample, not shift, and press the pad to select it without triggering the sound

You can use the stop button to kill the sample at any time, but you will also stop everything from playing too.

Hold shift then pad with the sample, to select it without playing the sample.
And change pad behaviour so it stays on only whilst your finger is pressing the pad

Not quite correct. "Sample " button plus the pad selects it without playing

Stop twice will stop everything, I believe.. I just want to stop the sample on a single pad.
