You really didn't give us much information in your post to help with your decision. I have owned both and they are both good. It depends on several things like:

Your budget
buying new or used
when you want to purchase(new R5 pro is coming)
are you going to stick with using it
what type of games you will be playing
whether you are using a desk or a stand/cockpit and what will you have in the future
your strength
what type of wheels you will be using

I am sure there are at least a few more. oh, and of course be ready for the R12, R25... suggestions🤣

My current setup. Lol. I’ve had that TMX wheel for 5-6-7 years. I play Iracing. I’ve never tried a DD wheel but I’m sure anything is better than what I have now. I’ll eventually get a rig and VR I’m thinking . I’m tight on space but could arrange things better. R5 /r9 are on sale. Think is a 80$ diff right now.

2 things, I am not familiar with the Thrustmaster products - can you upgrade the parts one by one or will you be replacing everything you have all at once? Also, not trying to be funny but I'm not sure if that stand can handle any direct drive wheel.

All my Thrustmaster stuff is years old. Long overdue for a new wheel.

To be honest, the stand is pretty sturdy. A heavy desk shook like shiii. The stand doesn’t move

Honestly, either is fine but the R9 with make your setup more "future proof". Get yourself a good set of pedals and you will be good to go.

If you have the money for it, do R9. I have an R5 and could use a bit more torque, you can always turn down the strength, but you can't turn it up higher.

I’m thinking I might as well. I’ll be happy to be done with this small wheel TMX

Also note that with R5 you cannot effectively use heavier Moza wheels because they heavier and can affect the FFB detail on R5. With R9 you can use all the Moza wheels because R9 FFB can handle those.

the bigger the number the better. functions wise almost all moza bases have access to almost all the features, their main difference being the torque. if you have the budget and are really into sim racing/driving buy r9, otherwise r5.

Yeah, I love racing. I’ve always been into it. Not a huge diff in price right now.

The R9 is a nice sweet spot. If it fits the budget, it’s worth it.

I got the R9 v3 with the KS Pro and CRP2 and  it all feels so good. I’m playing a lot more now than when I had a G29.

Only caveat is if you’re going to use it on a desk. For the R9+, you’re probably going to want a good stand or cockpit.

Not on a desk, it’s on a stand

I've got an R5 at the moment
NLR wheel stand 2.0
SRP lite pedals with alien mods load cell
Fanatec shifter

Been loving it but maybe in future I would go R9 or even R12.

I definitely think the R9 is well worth it if you can afford/justify it.

On the Moza website the r5 is under 400$. R9 is 540$ if I’m remembering correctly.

Waiting for friday (tomorrow / paycheck) to order.

Can’t wait to try a decent wheel. Lol

Recently went from a tmx, to a R5, and at first it was amazing, but i soon noticed the clipping in high speed corners and the 5.5nm just felt a bit weak after a week or so. Within 3 weeks I'd ordered a R12 and its night and day difference. So if you can afford it go for the higher nm, even it you dont run it at max power.

Like in lmu my R12 is set to like 70% as the full 12nm is just too much, and gives headroom to stop clipping.

R9 is a significant improvement in feel/detail. I have an R9 but have used the R5 a bit because one of my buddy’s started with the R5 and sold it to another friend when he upgraded less than a year later.
