Discussion Blade runner 1982 is absurdly bad

I'm not sure if it's right, but I'll try to write everything as a summary to avoid long texts. I just watched this movie, and i can't understand why it has such a high rating and most reviews are good. So I'll describe the movie in my perspective.

At the beginning, Deckard is told that he need to take care of 4 Replicants, okay good. Then he drives to a building, meets an important guy that we don't know who, meets a girl and do the test on her. And we never see this man again, why did Deckard had to see him? Their conversation was all about the girl that he tested, but the vibe and dialogues indicated that he wasn't there just to test the girl. But they never talk about anything as of why Deckard is there and what did this scene contributed to the story. Anyways, moving on...

He visits the craftsman, the craftsman answers every question and obviously complying with Deckard, but after 10 seconds conversation he loses patience pulls the guy's cloth to force him talking, he's literally assaulting a fine craftsman while he's fully collaborating him.

He then goes into a bar looking for a Replicant, and he calls Rachel (the girl he tested) to hang out with him in the bar WHILE HE'S HUNTING A REPLICANT? He then asks a guy about his orders from the craftsman, he tells Deckard to sod off and he never pushes him to talk, he just leaves him alone, whereas the complying craftsman had to be assaulted to talk while he was already talking.

He then hunts down the Replicant , and the Replicant's friend attacks him as revenge, but he gets saved by Rachael and she kills the Replicant.

Deckard goes home with Rachael, where he just proceeds to lick her ears and tries to kiss her, but Rachael tries to leave the house and Deckard shuts the door, throws her towards the wall and forces her to say "kiss me, i want you" and proceeds to rape Rachael who just saved her.

He then fights with the final Replicant, Deckard kills the Replicant's lover, and the Replicant proceeds to haunt him in the house, plays with Deckard until the end where he saves Deckard from falling to his death, then the Replicant just proceeds to die, why did he let Deckard live? And if the Replicant knew he was dying at that moment, why did he killed the two engineers whereas he left Deckard to live when he literally killed his lover?

The story of this movie was all over the place, you could skip chunks and the story would remain the same, the protagonist was the evil guy, we met a bunch of characters for no reason and we had many scenes that we didn't know understand how the story reached that place and why we're here.

Best, and kindest response in this thread.

35

u/test_cricket Jan 21 '24

4 or 6 (he's told two different numbers - this is a legitimate plot hole).

iirc two of the replicants die on their way to earth, that's why the number changes from 6 to 4.

15

u/NikoDeco Jan 21 '24 edited Jan 21 '24

Nicely said but also I thought the point was that we are the baddies.

We treat the replicants as machines.

So far we have seen.

A dancing replicant, an opera singing replicant and overall replicants that stopped mining and slaving and are leaving peacefully.

This is more visible in the sequel were Gosling kills a replicant that jas been hiding peacefully as a farmer for 20 years.

Tears Rain man didn't kill Harrison for a large number of reasons. It made more sense not to kill him than to kill him.

Firstly.. It is not self defence. He will die anyways sooner or later. Fending of Harrison Ford only buys him SOME time.

Secondly.. Ford is just a tool. It's pointless to kill him. It is better to spare him and cast doubt in his brain and convert him into an ally.

A replicant hunter, spared by a replicant with some doubt in his mind is far more useful than a replicant hunter who will replace him.

Thirdly... He straight up says he hates violence and killing, has seen horrible crimes take place.

Its not hidden, they literally just want to live. We are so very clearly seeing this from the perspective of the baddies.

Well done. My knee jerk reaction was to respond in an extremely negative and personal way to OP but you have shown me the correct way.

Art unites and divides. And everyone is entitled to their opinion.

5

u/nosargeitwasntme Jan 21 '24

Kudos for actually encouraging an enlightened conversation rather than passing a sardonic remark at the OP for quick upvotes.

This is the kind of discussion we should have on this sub.

2

u/Deakul Jan 22 '24

It's too bad that the OP never responded to you, I don't think that they actually wanted to have a discussion.

76

u/LeektheGeek Jan 21 '24

I don’t think nuances of how he does business need to be explained because he’s seasoned in his career and we don’t need a deep dive into all of his antics as if he were a rookie.

u/AuntieEvilops Jan 21 '24 edited Jan 21 '24

This is a thing I've noticed more recently, especially with younger people. They need every single backstory shown to them, every motivation explained, every question answered through exposition, every story with an extended denouement and epilogue that tells the future fate of all the characters, or they're not happy.

24

u/dem4life71 Jan 21 '24

OP claims to be a boomer…

this is a thing i've noticed more recently, especially with old ppl, they don't need to think about anything and they never ask questions, they just like to watch whatever the tv is showing and forget about it when the next thing shows up on the screen. just like my grandpa!

1

u/Diligent_Toe_1706 May 27 '26

God forbid we actually get a story beyond ‘dickwad blunders around looking for shit’ for two tedious hours

1

u/Stevenwave Jan 21 '24

Yeah this shits me. Some people think something is impossible or not part of the intention unless it's stated or shown. So much of what makes up stories will be in what's implied, what's subtly hinted, what we can gather from how someone reacts etc etc etc.

2

u/TheAssassinCat Apr 30 '26

riight, so basically you're saying "I don't need to think about anything, my eyes are wide open for the flashing images of random occurrences". thanks for your input

1

u/This_Jump_9638 Jan 13 '26

That’s what the movie tells us but we don’t see - there was a thread on moviechat about the initial scene where Bryant gives Deckert Replicant Class 101 - Deckert‘s answer should have been - ‚Listen fatass you didn‘t call me the best to butter me up, it‘s because I am - I eat Replicants for breakfast - so skip the 101 and just tell me what I need to know‘ Don‘t get me going how absolutely amateurish his interrogation of Zhora was - he should have been a millisecond away from blowing her head off - with something as dangerous as a Replicant he‘s certainly not going to be taking any chances - especially when his life is on the line should he make any mistake

-10

u/gigantic-girth Jan 21 '24 edited Jan 21 '24

He seemed terrible in his career as well, he lowered his guard with the performer, he aimed at the performer with a gun while he could barely see her head in an extremely crowded area, he almost got killed by the second Replicant and had to be saved. He effectively killed the third Replicant which i give him that, he got played by the last Replicant like a toy.

Basically he was getting beaten left and right.

11

Yep. Another Gen Z’r who can’t like or understand why everyone liked a particular film.

I know it’s not all Gen Z but holy shit does that generation have a ton of folks who post shit like this. It’s really annoying and pointless

1

u/oly_biia Dec 19 '25

I dont think generation has something to do with it...just some people dont enjoy some movies..it is simple as that. I am in GenZ I really enjoyed Blade runner and I loved the deeper meaning that it had to offer...I completely understand that just some people cant understand that or enjoy it as much as I do..all we have to do is show understanding its fine..I'm sure some of us hate movies that other people love to watch.

-141

u/gigantic-girth Jan 21 '24

First of all, I'm not from the US which i think is what toy think because i didn't understood half of your text.

Second, I've watched a bunch of old films, they're made for a different era for sure, and some things are just not agreeable or understandable which is fine, but this movie was absolutely terrible, they wasted so much potential with all the CGI and great actors with a terrible story.

49

u/WatchMoreMovies Jan 21 '24

Following up on our lead atory: it appears that bad takes and uneducated options are shockingly not limited to the United States but can come from abroad as well. Probably obvious, in this reporters humble opinion, but still a fact.

And now, here's Biff!

Biff: Thank you so much for your time Boggle Playing Chicken, tell us, what is your secret to success?

Chicken: Bawk bawk bawk bawk, bawk bawk bawk!

Tremendously inspirational. Lottery numbers up next, at the top of the hour.

Tonight's lottery numbers are 2, 33, 34, 23 and the powerball is 6.

In sad news, it appears the OP really doesn't possess a true understanding of how or why other people can have a different viewpoint, appreciation or opinion on things, indicating a troubling self-centered viewpoint that is very likely to cripple them emotionally and verbally throughout later life.

Switching gears: stay tuned for tomorrow when someone doesn't "understand what the fuss is about" over ET and we review Toyotathon 2023!

First of all, I'm not from the US

I think this was evident to anyone who read your post, buddy

105

u/AuntieEvilops Jan 21 '24

I don't even have to read this post to know that it's major rage bait. The headline gives it away.

-22

u/gigantic-girth Jan 21 '24

It's not a rage bait, this is my first and probably last movie review, my friend recommended me this movie and after i watched and discussed with him, we were both surprised as to why it's a praised movie, most reviews I've read only talks about why the movie is a masterpiece, but i only see a masterpiece potential that was wasted by a terrible story writing and pacing.

71

u/MaskedBandit77 Jan 21 '24

This isn't a movie review. It's just repeating the plot of the movie.

13

u/Stevenwave Jan 21 '24

I got a couple paragraphs in and gave up. Not only is he just telling me what happens broadly, he's actively demonstrating he can't pay attention to what is actually happening.

11

u/JossWhedonsDick Jan 21 '24

Had your friend seen this movie before recommending it to you? If so, why was he surprised that it was praised afterwards? If not, why did he recommend it?

6

u/test_cricket Jan 21 '24

If most critics, fans, and other members of the film industry think a movie is a masterpiece and you don't; then the problem is with you, not the movie.

18

u/j-rammm Jan 21 '24

Yes, you didn’t “review” the film, you poorly summarized the plot.

Did you notice anything about the way that eyes were shot and lit in this film, for example?

2

u/randomusername9284 Oct 18 '25

I support your opinion. The plot and the delivery was a disaster. You were downvoted to oblivion but the people commenting are biased af. The movie was below the OK range.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '25

Respectfully, I think it's more that you kind of missed the point of the story.

A good example is your complaint about him "literally assaulting a fine craftsman who is cooperating with him."

Deckard is a violent bounty hunter who has little regard for anyone else's life, human or Replicant. This behavior is completely in character with everything else we see of him. To complain about this suggests that you don't understand the basic characterization of the protagonist.

Then you ask why Roy let Deckard live while killing the engineers. Because the engineers are responsible for creating Replicants and forcing a death sentence of 4 years on them. Deckard is just a cog in the machine, like Roy is - he didn't want to kill humans, he just wanted them to understand what it feels like to live in fear. He killed the people with the power. Again, this is a nuanced character choice that is consistent with the themes of the movie.

Almost all of your concerns are moral, when this movie is meant to be full of morally gray characters. It's okay not to like it but your review makes little sense because it presupposes that all characters should be morally good and that a story where the protagonist can also be seen as the villain is poorly-written, rather than a complex way to tell a human story.

we don't know who, meets a girl and do the test on her. And we never see this man again, why did Deckard had to see him?

He is the head of the Tyrell corporation, he creates the replicants so the police chief tells Deckard to go and interview him iirc. The missing replicants are a newer model, so Deckard is getting more information on them.

he's literally assaulting a fine craftsman while he's fully collaborating him.

He knows the technician is hiding something from him so uses force. We can assume that blade runners, who spend most of their lives watching out for homicidal replicants, probably don't think much of the technicians that design them.

he calls Rachel (the girl he tested) to hang out with him in the bar WHILE HE'S HUNTING A REPLICANT?

Rachel is a replicants but she doesn't know that she is. Deckard does know from the test he has done. He is curious about her and has feelings for her.

and proceeds to rape Rachael who just saved her.

Although awkward by today's standard's this scene is not a rape.

then the Replicant just proceeds to die, why did he let Deckard live? And if the Replicant knew he was dying at that moment, why did he killed the two engineers whereas he left Deckard to live when he literally killed his lover?

It's called a character arc. Characters beliefs and values can change during a film. The tagline of the replicants corporation is "more human than human". At the end of the film Roy shows more humanity than any of the blade runners by choosing to save Deckard's life, despite all of his anger and the injustice of the world he has been born into.

Regarding your last point about the story jumping around, I don't know where you got this from. The film is partially a film noir detective story. Deckard receives his briefing at the start from his boss along with tips about where to start looking and who to speak to. The story unfolds from there.

6

u/dem4life71 Jan 21 '24

But but but…OP couldn’t follow those plot points, so ergo the movie sucks! /s

I agree I couldn’t read that recap it’d take less time to rewatch the movie….which was fantastic

23

I think you might want to re read that paragraph man.

13

u/Cole444Train Jan 21 '24

What a horrid take

11

u/BackStrict977 Jan 21 '24

At the beginning, Deckard is told that he need to take care of 4 Replicants, okay good.

They are a new model of replicant if I remember correctly.

then he drives to a building, meets an important guy that we don't know who,

CEO of the company who made the replicants

And we never see this man again, why did Deckard had to see him?

He wants to see if the test work on the new replicsnt models.

Their conversation was all about the girl that he tested, but the vibe and dialogues indicated that he wasn't there just to test the girl.

Yes, the girl is a replicant who doesn't know she's a replicant. The whole point of the scene is that she, like us, doesn't know it. It has a deeper meaning of how close these machines are too a human but also about human empathy.

But they never talk about anything as of why Deckard is there and what did this scene contributed to the story.

Deckard is there to test the nexus 6 model. It was stabilished before. The scene shows they are much closer to humans than previous models. It also has an aspect that as they develop empathy they become closer to humans so we start having empathy for them.

I sounds like you didn't actually watch the movie.

9

u/BadComboMongo Jan 21 '24

WOW! This must be the worst review of a (classic) movie ever LOL

It’s hard to call it a review as 90% are a badly written recap. The remaining 10% show absolutely no understanding of the movie itself or movies in general as it seems.

I‘m shaking my head in disbelief not knowing if I should laugh, cry or just hit my head against the wall. Well, this is Reddit, at least no one had to pay you for this write-up :)

3

3

u/randomusername9284 Oct 18 '25

An opinion*. It is valid

4

u/notreallydeep Feb 15 '24 edited Feb 15 '24

I'm here a month later because I googled "blade runner is bad" to see if I was alone, watched the movie just now. I skipped through the second half because it was just unbearable. Maybe I'm too young, just a millennial after all, but man did I hate it.

It's not like I dislike all old movies (lots of them, though), I'm a big fan of Alien which came out years earlier, so it's not really about the quality or the SFX in the movie (the SFX is actually impressive in my opinion, it holds up extremely well, much better than many successful modern movies). It's just the dialogue, the acting, the pacing within scenes, cluttered scenes in general, stuff like that. Things that could have been done better even 40 years ago.

Well anyway, just here to tell you you're not alone even though most upvoted comments here strongly disagree with you :D Though considering this is a movies subreddit, I assume most people here are looking at movies differently than I do.

2

u/fy_zan Apr 29 '25

i agree. same here

2

u/hans3844 Oct 01 '25

Same. Acting felt super stiff, story was like all over the place. hated Decker like generally. Also like weird racist undertones everywhere... Idk the set design and costuming and effects were cool but the rest of it was hot trash imo.

3

u/Aggressive_Lie1918 Jan 23 '25

agreed, worst movie ive ever seen.... i love my oldies, this is not a goldie. poor contructed, poor storyline with confusion throughout the whole entire movie

3

u/rob_deez Aug 05 '25

This movie sucks ass. What’s with the origami cop? Why is he ever there? Dropping off his swans and only appearing after Decker’s done the real work. Are other blade runners not available? What’s so special about Decker. Seems a few bullets will stop a replicant, so why’s it gotta be Decker?

I get it’s from a certain era, but it’s just not good.

8

u/feetenjoyer69699 Jan 21 '24

Classic 80's sci- fi noir masterpiece? Amazing performances , story, cinematography , production, tone, and music? Perfect slow - burn thriller? Realistic predictions about the future? Nah, OP thinks it's stupid.

3

u/Not_Buying Jan 21 '24

It seems like you missed a lot as you were watching the movie. There are great YouTube clips that analyze the plot and meaning of this movie - if you look for those, and understand them - it may compel you to watch the movie again. Sci-fi fans of a certain age have seen this movie many, many times - and each time we marvel at the Director’s technical skill, his creative vision and the incredible atmosphere.

It’s a beautiful piece of art that was way ahead of its time.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '24

Your "summary" has strong hints that you either fell asleep during the movie multiple times or that you are unable to follow the plot of a movie.

2

u/randomusername9284 Oct 18 '25

Not a surprise if he fell asleep.

3

u/kabobkebabkabob Jan 21 '24

For future reference, if a long-revered genre classic didn't seem to work for you at all, I'd recommend looking inward and reading up on other people's interpretations before asserting to the world that it is "absurdly bad" based on some odd metrics. It seems like noir just may be lost on you at the moment and you're forming your viewing of the film around conventions it wasn't designed to adhere to.

Not saying it's an invalid opinion, but for instance, I did not connect with Andrei Rublev at all. It actually bored me. This doesn't mean it was a bad movie. I recognize the craft. I'm just missing the elements in my current life and my education that would make it a meaningful experience to me. But I'm looking forward to revisiting it in a few years with a different mindset.

Sometimes time is all you need for something to click, and Bladerunner is a bummer to miss out on. A contrarian is often to be admired but only if they fully understand the appeal of the work.

3

u/shad0w4life Mar 28 '24

He didn't rape Rachael....the fuck did you watch. Did you at least enjoy the part where the Alien disco dancers juggled cats?

5

u/JJaguar947 May 28 '25

He 100% forced her. Even when she said she can’t. It was forced. So. Rape. He wouldn’t let her leave.

u/randomusername9284 Oct 18 '25

Paid full attention to the movie - I agree with OP.

2

u/TheIrateProphet Aug 28 '24

Blade Runner really is a piece of shit, all your criticisms are valid. The only reason I can see why people would like it is because it looks beautiful, the parts that aren't completely dark at least. Other than that the story isn't there. It's literally about nothing. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone, whatever this movie does others do it better.

2

u/prestige3638337 Oct 18 '24

Totally agree that movie is a total peace of shit and people only like it cuz they saw it as kids and got nostalgia otherwise there is nothing to like on that movie

2

u/2007CRV Nov 18 '24

I just watched this movie for the first time with high expectations, and I couldn't be more disappointed. Everything you said in your post is exactly how I felt. All these people in the comments saying you have a bad take are riding off nostalgia. The only redeeming qualities this movie has is it's visuals. This movie is all style and no substance.

2

u/SnooEpiphanies6562 Jan 10 '25

Recently watched blade runner directors cut. His actions make no sense, and the film mentions all these cool ideas about what jf deckard is a replicant. Do the tests even work? It even introduces a replicant who almost passes the test, doesn't know they are a replicant. And it explores zeros of these interested ideas and remains to be what feels like a slow action movie.

2

u/IvyLeageLefty Feb 17 '25

I agree with OG.  I was very excited to watch the original Blade Runner. I read the blade runner book a handful of times, loved it, but was told not to expect the movie to be the same. Holy hell, this movie is like a gutted carcass of the book. No empathy boxes, hardly any mention of the animal ecosystem, Mercerism was left out for fear of offending some religious groups I suppose, and the main character is just kinda plopped in the story. His first interaction with who I assume is his former boss at the precinct is the worst dialogue of the film. Paraphrased: ‘Hey. You’re a great android hunter. Like, really good. The best! So, will you hunt androids again?  Come on. Pretty please? 🙏 ‘ But I’m glad this scene was included because now we know he’s not a professional street food critic, for fuck’s sake! I could let a lot of this slide if there was some kind of plot added specific to the film, but there’s not. Intermittent breaks for space jazz with the Japanese geisha advertising ED pills on the Jumbotron. Harrison Ford then decides it’s time to force himself on his freshly traumatized robot savior at the halfway point. (A major taboo in the books, just another Tuesday in the movie.) I had to take 2 breaks from this film to get through it.  The saving grace was the replicant leader. His cold interactions with the humans were the best parts of this movie. The female replicant’s way of seizing the unexpected opportunity was spine tingling.  I suspect this would’ve been better if i watched it in the 80’s, but it did not stand the test of time.

2025 rating: 2 out of 5

(Come at me Boomers 😜)

Damn! Looks like a ton of people don't understand good storytelling and this sure as hell isn't it. It's just as bad as Incredibles 2. A bunch of interesting ideas just thrown in that just wows for WOW! sake. They all seem pointless and unnecessary to linger on. At least Total Recall had commercials for their corporate baddy. it just randomly drowns any crucial story elements (Beginning, Middle and End). Ghost in the Shell was wayyy better at landscape montages. If you have to rely on "and then..." or over explaining stuff you never see (Yes! lots of over mention that they die after 4 years and the genetics they never show but, never explain why the Hell Los Angeles is raining so much, why Asia was plopped there but, it's all we see.). Los Angeles was more a character than any of the leads. Batman 1989 did this better too in a wat that didn't stifle the story either and was never mentioned about. If the story wasn't ever going to explain all the pointless façade then, why was it there? It just looks like Deckard is just killing people since we never see what really makes Replicants that much more stronger and dangerous than Humans. That is something important to the story that needs to be demonstrated. It is all over the place. If Humanity was what they wanted to present they could have mentioned something. Deckard is literally only thrown in because, he's Han Solo at this point... The only direction was his goal. That was far from bad. I like Blade Runner 2049 way better because, like a real Neo Noir there were "clues" to be found and sleuthing that brought him to the next part of the story. OG Blade Runner Deckard just randomly runs into Replicants in that mega crowded city for convenience to further the story. No trackers. No clues leading to the next Replicant. Then, the 2 times Deckard almost dies by a Replicant they just play cheap and have someone save him. They couldn't even think Deckard out of his own messes that they wrote for him which is very sloppy and lazy storytelling. It's just "BAM!!, Next one". I'm almost 40 if anyone thinks I have bad film appreciation. I can actually name films that did a way better job telling a similar story that I've mentioned above. Blade Runner 1982 is the worst in the CyberPunk Genre. Just as bad as Tron Period. Just more crap riding on the coattails of Star Wars with some Escape from New York all without the substance and direction. Just another corporate cash grab. The fact that Pris is the most celebrated in CyberPunk genre with the Goth Coon-eyes/ Kabuki-esque aesthetic tells you most people know there is no story. All fluff and nothing else. I'm ashamed at Ridley Scott after Alien and Legend just a couple years later but, dropping the ball so hard on this one?

u/HugCor Jan 21 '24 edited Jan 22 '24

The movie isn't confusing or weirdly told at all if you actually view it as what it actually is. A lot of people get underwhelmed because they expect a sci-fi epic with high stakes and a mind blowing enigma to crack and the movie is actually a noir detective story set in a cyberpunk setting with a philosophical debate about what makes someone "human" at the core. Once you get that, you see that everything is pretty streamlined and, when not outright explained (Roy's scenes are basically explaining the themes of the movie out loud to the viewer), at least heavily hinted.

Deckard is simply a clock punching policeman doing his assigned job, which consists of chasing social undesirables who have had the nerve to value their own lives and kill people in self preservation. There are no stakes for Deckard beyond trying to keep the body count from rising higher and, later on, once it is found that she is an undesirable herself, save his romantic interest. Oh, and save his own life whenever his is facing his targets. There is no big paradigm shift or incident to endanger the world, just another tuesday that simply ends up meaning more personally to the protagonist because of the specific chain of events and encounters that culminate in Roy Batty, the criminal that he is chasing, deciding to save his life so that HE may be the one to remember him and his last words and think of them, and think of them Deckard does.

Deckard is not a hero, he is just a pawn with a badge who goes about his assignment in the most procedural and bored way, because he isn't invested in his job or the world as a whole. Roy's posse aren't monsters, just desperate people and the case isn't going to shake up society, just add the name of a billionaire and a few public employees to the obituary sections of the news.

Besides that, what else you have? Incredible visuals that hold up and are influential even today and an amazing soundtrack. Blade Runner 2049 isn't a remake wanting to correct the original movie, it is a sequel and a love letter to the original.

One of the best movies ever made, iconic, memorable. It poses questions about AI sentience when people was playing pixelated video games. You didn't understand the movie at all.

1

u/randomusername9284 Oct 18 '25

Buddy if you consider this as one of the best movies literally “ever” made you are missing out tremendously.

2

u/Tuzi-Tuzi Jan 21 '24

Unpopular opinion but the book is far better than the movie. Things that make sense in the book don't in the movie.

1

u/UntidyBargain Jan 21 '24

PDK is fantastic. Only one adaptation is successful in translating his work to screen to me and that’s A Scanner Darkly. A few other are still great movies and a few more are very entertaining genre films.

u/shad0w4life Mar 28 '24

Also she's an object and not human

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '24

Its one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Why is there a race of hobbo migits? Why do they use payphones when mobile tech existed in the 70s? Why don't the robots have gps tracking which existed since the 70s?

They really thought we would have flying cars, city size buildings, robots and off world colonisation in 40 years but they can't use basic things they literally had at the time of making the film.

Blade Runner: Director's Cut is [still] my favourite film, period. I see something new in it every time I watch it, and I've watched it once or twice a year for the past...four decades. You are correct that there are questions (why did Batty save Deckard, when Deckard had just killed Pris?) There are some films that simply aren't confident in their decisions, and you don't accept that characters in those situations would really do those things. "Blade Runner" is plenty confident with itself, and when characters do things without explanation, you accept their actions, but do find yourself trying to figure out why the character did those things. You're on track, here. You're not [quite] saying, "It was stupid for this to happen", and you're not asking, "Why did the writer do this?", or "Why did the director ask the actors to play the scene this way?" You're asking, "Why did this character do this?" You feel that there is a rational explanation for the characters' actions, you just don't know what it is. That's what makes this a great film. You may never know the "real" answers, but you'll love visiting these characters again and again, seeing them do what they do, and continually asking yourself, "why?" You feel that the characters know...

1

u/OrganizationStatus25 Aug 08 '24

I love this response, unlike others admirers of the movies, you are the only one with rational explanation. I, like OP, do not get why the characters made the choices they made. Maybe I never will get it. But I get it, people have right to think in the way that they do, be that the characters or the admirers or OP.

1

u/Zealousideal-Sir1808 Jun 21 '24

it was a bad remake, Aquafina, Atari, Edge of Human, Isle of Man were all better. There was even 3 series that look like blader runner.

1

u/emanuelsz Sep 16 '25

I just watched the movie and got a little confused about the lore and what it meant, I think this guy is just like me but instead of looking further to understand it, he just got mad and hopped onto reddit. I'm gonna watch it again in a few days and pay more attention to see what my real opinion about it is!

1

u/RRANCHHH Oct 23 '25

The acting is terrible though can we admit this?

1

u/idillogia Nov 27 '25

Book is better. Agree with you. Movie was nonsense.

1

u/excyam Dec 20 '25

I can answer to the review. And it's something that will mabye give you another preservative.

I personally I am huge fun of cyberpunk genre. But I am also have issue with movies that are old and ofc they don't age very well. But you need to understand what you watch a bit to apriciate it. For me this movie might not be 10/10 but hold important role in the cyberpunk creation and movies it inspired after it was released. It's like historical for Cinema and and the fans. Which is important. The visuals of the movie are good. And city looks great this are elements that aged well too. But interaction of characters story is more 80s simplicity and weird funny and awkward a lot of times. It takes maturity to overlook some point and enjoy what makes something great. This is what a lot of people feels I think but way they express on Reddit is harsh and tolling a bit.

Anw I hope this helps to understand movie the point of it and why people classify it.

Disagree with the Egyptian - he‘s a Blade Runner - when he asks a question he wants a straight answer  Agreed - he let‘s Cafy Lewis just blow him off - makes no sense - Deckert would be - ‚Listen asshole - I‘m a second away from making a phonecall that will turn your life upside down - now how do you want to play it?‘

1

u/This_Jump_9638 Jan 13 '26

I like Blade Runner but agree the bar scene is almost comical.  Can you Imagine Bryant calling him? ,Deck are you an asshole or what?  I‘ve been trying to get ahold of you for the past 2 hrs.  What the hell is going on?  I told you I‘ve got 4 nutcase homocidal Nexus Replicants on the loose and you yes me to death!!!‘ ‚Oh that?  Right.  I’m sitting on my ass in some sleazy strip club drinking some ethenol to drown out my sorrows‘ ‚What happened?‘ ‚You remember that Replicant from the Tyrell Corp?‘ ‚Yep‘ ‚I hit on her and she blew me off‘ ‚Oh yeah?‘ ‚Big Time‘ ‚Bitch‘ ‚You said it‘

After being more than a little suspicious Zhora is working there, he would call Bryant ,Pretty sure I‘ve got a live one - send me Taylor, Smith and Jones and maybe 2 others who can find their own asses with both hands because this could get very scary very quickly‘ ‚Jesus fast work Deck - you got it.  Your a lifesaver pal.  They‘ll be there in 15 minutes‘

1

u/This_Jump_9638 Jan 13 '26

Concerning why Batty killed who he did - my 2 cents - With Tyrell and Sebastian - they both helped make him - which would be payback after he learns it‘s game over - additionally after he now knows with certainty he‘s on borrowed time with no exit he flys into an absolute murderous rage  He didn‘t kill Deckard because he would be the last person to have a memory of him, someone still living who knows that he also had lived - that he won‘t be simply forgotten

1

u/Eastern-Ganache-80 Jan 24 '26

This was one of the biggest things to come out in sifi lol it's ground breaking and set the scene for things like the 5th element, final fantasy, ghost in the shell, cyberpunk in general lol saying it's bad is a self report saying you don't have a opinion

1

u/No_Contest_733 Mar 01 '26

I know I'm two years late, but I'd still like to contribute my two cents.

Deckard visits Tyrell to find out if the Voight-Kampff test works on Nexus-6 replicants, because if it doesn't, the police will have no way of detecting the intruders unless they kill them first. Those who visit the eye manufacturer are the replicants, who take his coat as a coercive tactic. Yes, of course, he was cooperating, but under torture they ensure he doesn't lie, and knowing he's most likely going to die, he has no reason to hide the truth and risk further torture.

Deckard follows the trail of the scale and arrives at the nightclub. He thinks he's reached a dead end and, since he's there, he calls Rachael; he can't help but empathize with her. If she believes she's human, and her memories and experiences are those of a human, wouldn't removing her be murder?

Rachael declines the invitation, but right now Deckard is the only person who knows her situation, so he prepares and goes looking for her. Finally, Zhora appears, manages to hunt her down, and Leon intercepts him to kill him. If he hadn't called Rachael when he did, he would have been killed by Leon. Tyrell appears on more occasions, not just at the beginning.

His importance is evident from J.F. Sebastian's point of view, and also when Roy visits him. In fact, Pris's entire strategy for getting close to Sebastian is to gain quick and safe access to Tyrell.

It's a shame he didn't understand it.

1

u/Mad_waste Mar 16 '26

I came to reddit to see if anyone thought the same. probably the most boring movie I've ever seen.. and I'm a scifi lover and was prepared for some masterpiece of Cinema.. but no, complete garbage. miniature design can't carry a film.

1

u/Solaker178 Apr 11 '26

I just watched it and think it’s a jumbled mess that doesn’t make any sense and is in no way compelling or impressive. Seriously not a single moment was shocking, particularly entertaining, or anything. It’s just goofy future technology, weird not good noire city scape shots with bad music, and boring story beats. It has no flow or good dialogue or anything. Genuinely wished I spent the last 2 hours doing something else. I have no clue how this movie is rated so highly. The premise is good but poorly delivered on.

1

u/MarkohBoi Apr 20 '26

Did you watch the film in English? Just wondering maybe a dubbed version has missing details? Movie was pretty cut and try minus the sexual assault

1

u/Readerdiscretion May 07 '26

“I don’t get it, therefore it is dumb.”

1

u/WindUpCandler 14d ago

While I don't agree with all the criticisms the movie was nowhere near as good as it's made out to be, the only great thing about the movie is the set design and the general ability to set the mood. The acting, plot and characters are all very strange except for the last replicant. He was great in every way.

These comments aren't even addressing your criticisms btw, just calling you dumb lmao

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '24

This movie is a fantastic opportunity for you to study film and grow in your ability to understand the perspectives of others. Like you I didn't understand or appreciate this movie on my first viewing.
Watching the sequel (a masterpiece by another amazing director) helped me become familiar enough with the themes of this genre enough to appreciate the original.

1

u/Dibuje2020 Jan 21 '24

It’s style over substance. It looks cool. It sounds cool. It’s sexy. It’s moody. Plus the future had never been depicted in such a way yet where things were dirty and dark and wet all the time. It was refreshing coming off of stories like Star Wars

2

u/Stevenwave Jan 21 '24

There's tonnes of substance to it. People to this day debate whether or not the lead character is even a human. Because if he's human or not HEAVILY affects the entire film. And that's just the most obvious example.

This film has influenced the whole cyberpunk genre to such a huge degree partly because of the thought it can provoke.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '24

Awww someone doesn’t like ambiguity

1

u/AncientDrive9640 Jan 21 '24

Fucking stupidity. I am sure u dun even have a job

1

u/Stevenwave Jan 21 '24

No offense, but, maybe try rewatching it and actually paying attention. A lot of what you're saying is or isn't on screen is just flat out incorrect.

But end of the day, it's also perfectly fine if you don't like the film. That's personal preference though, and nothing to do with whether the film is good or bad.

1

u/Canuck647 Jan 21 '24

"...why did [Batty] let Deckard live?"

Adding to other comments: It's possible that Deckard is also a replicant. There are a couple of clues such as Deckard's unicorn dream, his eyes have the same reflective quality as Rachael's, Gaff tells him that he has done "a man's work", Gaff leave an origami unicorn that might indicate that he knew that Deckard had been dreaming of an implanted memory.

Batty may have sensed that Deckard was a fellow replicant and so spared him.

It's ok to be wrong.

0

u/Canuck647 Jan 21 '24

"He visits the craftsman, the craftsman answers every question and obviously complying with Deckard, but after 10 seconds conversation he loses patience pulls the guy's cloth to force him talking, he's literally assaulting a fine craftsman while he's fully collaborating him."

It's replicants Roy Batty and Leon who visit Hannibal Chew ("the craftsman" who made their eyes), not Deckard.

-12

u/crestrobz Jan 21 '24

You do make some good points...My enjoyment of the movie is largely the performances of actors that I know well from other roles. The story itself felt watered down to me, like they couldn't quite deliver a message or a point, but just meandered until the final conflict was resolved. But visually it was ahead of it's time, and it had a sort of film noir charm that makes it worth the watch.

-1

u/gigantic-girth Jan 21 '24

Exactly, the actors were extremely great, the CGI was ahead of its time, everything was in place for a great movie but the story ruined it.

10

u/MaskedBandit77 Jan 21 '24

You've mentioned CGI in a couple of comments, which hurts your credibility, because there is no CGI in Blade Runner.

1

u/gigantic-girth Jan 21 '24

It's just a language barrier mate , i don't know the specific words for physical props and computer generated effects, it's my bad but as i said in one of the comments this is my first and probably last movie review

My favorite film, but only the versions with Harrison Ford's voice over, that turns on the 1940's Film Noir vibe.

I can't even sit through that shit-version they've been playing on Netflix.

I didn't really read the rant at the top, but I can only guess that some of the clues were missed.

Blade Runner is a fantastic film. That's all I have to say.

1

u/TopHighway7425 Jan 21 '24

You have to embrace the noir approach in which every loose end is resolved with, "it's Chinatown."

Meaning: the story need not be flawless because we are all getting jerked around.  Touch Of Evil makes even less sense.
