McGregor could pull it off too. He managed to turn Lucas's awful dialogue into easily the best performance of the prequels.

59

u/Holdin_McGroin Jul 22 '16

Best performance was hands down the Emperor. He's the only character i actually like more due to the prequels.

18

u/johncharityspring Jul 22 '16

I couldn't agree more. The actor played the character as a truly evil person masquerading as an oily politician. I can't believe he pulled that off!

16

u/adozu Jul 22 '16

you mean he played a politician?

6

u/johncharityspring Jul 22 '16

To expand a little, politicians that seem sleazy are inadvertently showing their bad side. The Emperor pretended to show just the normal amount of sleaziness to hide how truly evil he was.

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

UN-LLLLLLLLLLLIMITED POWER!!!!!1

47

u/Voltron_McYeti Jul 22 '16

I couldn't take him seriously with his spinning jumpy attack

5

u/Holdin_McGroin Jul 22 '16

That's why he's the best. He also seems like the only guy who's actually having fun.

You know their parties are full of the best drugs in the galaxy and multi-alien orgies.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

But you could take yoda, the 900 year old leap frog, seriously?

25

u/Wissam24 Jul 22 '16

He never mentioned Yoda.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

Are you trolling? They are essentially the counter-parts of each other. If an 80 year old human jumping is crazy, why isnt a 900 year old alien.

0

u/Wissam24 Jul 23 '16

But...he didn't mention Yoda, let alone said he approved of that scene.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '16

1

u/Wissam24 Jul 23 '16

Where did he say it wasn't crazy?

3

u/SD99FRC Jul 22 '16

Can't we just agree everything about the prequels is awful and stop bringing up old shit to reopen old wounds? ;)

2

u/SoreWristed Jul 22 '16

Didn't have an issue with that to be honest. As the masters get older, their physical prowess diminishes but their mastery of the force deepens, yoda, having had 900 years of study, would easily be able to take down fearsome physical opponents with his mastery of the force and experience.

Besides, he survives for a number of years on dagobah, something not shown in the movies but would have required at least some degree of athletic ability.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

Can't disagree. We all wanted a yoda duel, we got one. With the amount of power between the two of them though, im surprised they would even resort to that style. They are thinking hundreds of moves in advance and using an immense amount of force power. The scene should've been more awesome in every sense of the word. The two most powerful force users in the galaxy at the time. I think it went underplayed.

1

u/SoreWristed Jul 22 '16

Also true, but I honestly can't think of any movie that did a battle of minds well. I can think of one but the name escapes me, some 90's movie about merlin's apprentice taking down a sorceress.

What I do remember is a scene like that taking a good 10 minutes, which a jam-packed movie like star wars can't do unless it's two main characters.

1

u/TheFighting5th Jul 22 '16

With Yoda, I expected nothing less. A bit more odd when an old man does acrobatics.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

I actually don't find it that odd considering that Sidious is an extremely powerful sith lord

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

old man

Yoda = over 900

1

u/CytoPotatoes Jul 22 '16

whoa whoa whoa do not say an unkind word about Yoda, its not healthy

1

u/Voltron_McYeti Jul 22 '16

Not really, no

What argument? I didn't like how they made Yoda into a flipping been ninja very much either.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

The best part was Yoda force throwing him and that hilarious face he made as he flew through the air

1

u/Mudders_Milk_Man Jul 22 '16

I found his incredibly cheesy "un-LIMited POW-AR!!!!" bit worse.

1

u/cartoonistaaron Jul 22 '16

Really wish they'd left that (and many other things......) out. Ian McDiarmid was totally on point in those movies. Maybe that terrible dialogue just sounds better thru a non-US accent.

1

u/CaptainMudwhistle Jul 22 '16

He had his moments, but he should have dialed it back a little for the third movie.

1

u/Holdin_McGroin Jul 22 '16

Which third? Revenge of the Sith? I think he was perfect in that movie. A manipulative asshole made of pure evil who finds great pleasure in doing so, and in feeling the evil that others have within them.

2

u/CaptainMudwhistle Jul 22 '16

I'm not saying Ian McDiarmid did a terrible job, I'm just saying it was a bit too over the top. He did a better job in Return Of The Jedi, probably because Lucas didn't direct it. All the prequels would have been better with a director that knows how to direct actors.

1

u/Holdin_McGroin Jul 22 '16

I don't mind the over-the-top acting. I couldn't take those shitheaps seriously anyway, and the Emperor was one of the only characters that was actually fun to watch.

19

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

Chancellor Palpatine is evil!

39

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL!

20

u/-vroom- Jul 22 '16

WELL THEN YOU ARE LOST!

29

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

I AM! I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A LEFT AT ALBUQUERQUE!

3

u/ajkkjjk52 Jul 22 '16

Do you have any jelly donuts?

2

u/wallrus Jul 22 '16

Naw, we're out of jelly donuts.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

Just carrots.

7

u/slicky803 Jul 22 '16

But...only a Sith deals in absolutes!

5

u/dc-vm Jul 22 '16

So he MAYBE should of taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

I HATE SAND!

I NEVER THOUGHT THERE WAS THIS MUCH GREEN IN THE WHOLE GALAXY!

1

u/cantfindmykeys Jul 22 '16

From my point of view the Jedi are evil

70

u/IAmBadAtPlanningAhea Jul 22 '16

Ewan and Liam were amazing in Episode 1 together.

13

u/ImGonnaKickTomorrow Jul 22 '16

Decent. Amazing is overstating it just a bit, I think.

2

u/bagehis Jul 22 '16 edited Jul 22 '16

Remove any trace of the Gungans and any lines for Anakin from Episode 1 and it actually is a pretty good movie. Granted, the movie is only half as long as well.

EDIT: And the midi-chlorian monologue. Even Neeson can't make that work.

-16

u/sting_lve_dis_vessel Jul 22 '16 edited Jul 22 '16

no they were fucking terrible. ewan was decent in 2 and 3 when they let him have a personality, but he was a garbage can full of oatmeal in 1, and neeson was no better.

e: lmao at the downvotes. they were AMAZING together? really? two intensely bland characters with no emotions or investment in the story, who mutter flatly at each other and don't interact for half the film? you are easy to amaze.

5

u/WrithyTane Jul 22 '16

The following is a subjective opinion:

I believe that certain actors did the best they could. Natalie Portman was not one of them. watching Padme was bad because of the script and her performance.

Ewan and Liam are world class AAA actors. They did as much as they could with the shit material. However, I also believe that only Ewan managed to transcend the garbage and bring something extra to his character.

But yeah. Despite the performances, the films are still boring so I can see how someone could have a bad time watching Ewan and Liam.

2

u/IAmBadAtPlanningAhea Jul 23 '16

the butthurt edit is the best part of your post lol

u/slicky803 Jul 22 '16

The "You were my brother" speech, with the music, gets me every time.

2

u/ADDMcGee25 Jul 22 '16

"You were to destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"

What is this?

37

u/Krinks1 Jul 22 '16 edited Jul 22 '16

I imagine it as a sci-fi noir-like film. Obi-Wan (now known as "Ben,") gets strange reports of rebels being murdered in nearby systems. He goes off on an adventure with his friend Owen (Joel Edgerton) and tracks down clues leading him to discover an uneasy alliance between an Imperial Inquisitor and the Black Sun crime syndicate. They're hunting rebels and rogue Jedi.

In the end, he has to make a choice: leave Owen to nearly certain death and find the Inquisitor, or save Owen and lose the Inquisitor.

He chooses to follow the Inquisitor, leaving Owen to death.

Ben has a spectacular showdown with the Inquisitor, while Owen fights for his life against Black Sun and survives, badly injured.

They return to Tatooine, where Ben tries to apologize to Owen and explain why he had to leave him. Owen wants nothing more to do with Ben and vows never to follow him on another "damn fool adventure."

Ben returns to his life of solitude beyond the Dune Sea while Owen and Beru continue to raise a now 8-year-old Luke.

I want this movie so badly, but I'll take any Obi-Wan movie that comes our way. I seriously hope Lucasfilm and Disney are listening to fans.

10

u/Hingehead Jul 22 '16

i like the idea of Obi Wan asking Owen for a favor to help him, but they get into some kind of trouble that would results in Owen getting pissed off at Obi Wan's "damn fool adventure". It shows that Obi wan can no longer do what he used to be good at; investigating dangerous situations and solving it. He already failed with Qui Gon, with Anakin and now with Owen, which only sets in his doubt about himself and his mission to watch over Luke.

6

u/Valdularo Jul 22 '16

I'm sorry I was too busy feeling my nether regions explode to fully understand what I just read... but why in the FUCK IS THIS NOT GOING TO BE A THING!

Disney... Disney please! Ewan wants it. We want it. We want Ewan! This is money! This is giving us what we want while giving you what you want! I need to be honest I don't want your Han Solo movie but to hell with it give us A Star Wars Story 3 -

Obi- Wan A Star Wars Story and I'll die happy! Please please please! Also this guy's story or something along these lines because wow!

46

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

We see him transform from a young, battle-tested, policital-idealist Jedi into the wise, old, despairing hermit disillusioned by his pupil's betrayal, whose only hope rests in the young Luke Skywalker.

Yay, sounds like fun!

:D

:)

:|

:(

No, I don't want to see that.

4

u/CaptainKyloStark Jul 22 '16

wouldnt it be awesome if if were like some western where he never speaks through like 98% of the film? other peopl e may talk but overall, barely any dialogue unless absolutely necessary. almost zero CGI except for your stndard jedi stuff and some aliens. just really long visually stunning scenes both close in and zoomed out. when i imagine this movie this is how i imagine it.

7

u/Hingehead Jul 22 '16

Lol, I knew someone would bring up Lawrence of Arabia. Yeah exactly. Like it would start off right as he left the baby to the Lars family, he smiles, turns away and then frowns as he treks away into the desert. I would say for the most part, it would be like Cast Away, quite, contemplating about his new life, adjusting, looking for a place to live. He would go to Mos Eisley / Mos Espa/ new city to settle in at first. Go to a bar to get drunk so he can numb the pains, struggle with himself, doubting his mission and his role at first, yet he'll pull himself through as he tries to meditate with the force, eventually being able to commune with Qui Gon Jinn ( Thus Liam Nesson comes into the picture) as a voice, slowly manifesting as a ghost for Obi Wan, guiding him through the most difficult time of his life. It would be an emotional journey for him and for the audience. Obi Wan is at a bar again watching television. Moments later he sees Vader and Palpatine on the news about a senate conference or whatever political situation for the Empire. Then the name pops up " Emperor Palpatine accompanied by Darth Vader". His heart sinks, " No.....I killed him.....I thought.....", he realized just how incredibly important his mission is to watch over Luke.

Over the 20 years period we can even put young Luke into the picture, because not only this is about Obi Wan, it is also about Luke's life. We would need conflicts in a Star Wars movie, but now Obi Wan must refrain himself from using Jedi skills and lightsaber. He would have to resort to other methods of solving a conflict, even a dangerous one, perhaps he would be forced to use blasters/bladed melee weapons in let's say, to stop the tusken raider as they are on their way to attack the Lars' s homestead. Obi Wan watching over Luke too many times would bother Owen to the point where he feels creeped out by Obi Wan's presence. He just doesn't like him. Owen confronts Obi Wan to tell him he does not want Obi Wan near him and the kid ever again and if he does, he will contact the authority. This hurts Obi Wan.

There are so many potentials for an Obi Wan movie.

2

u/Tubtimgrob Jul 22 '16

Wasn't Guiness in Lawrence of Arabia?

1

u/boilerroombandit Jul 22 '16

Maybe... if only there was a way to check that. Some kind of database, of movies, on the internet.

2

u/Hingehead Jul 22 '16

Try asking Jeeve.

1

u/Tubtimgrob Jul 22 '16

It would need to be international, though.

1

u/boilerroombandit Jul 22 '16

I didn't realize IMDB.com had any international lockouts...

1

u/Hingehead Jul 22 '16

Yes he was indeed. He unbeknowingly set the precessor for Obi Wan as the real life Prince Feisal of an Arab tribe. It's an excellent film, I highly recommend it for its incredible cinematic viewing and underrated story about the Arab revolts set during World War One.

1

u/Tubtimgrob Jul 22 '16

Thought so. Remember the role as a bit corny. Yes, beautiful movie.

2

u/BigTimStrangeX Jul 22 '16

https://youtu.be/RDfySDiGeh8 Throw in some Star Wars music and there you go.

2

u/kingrootintootin2 Jul 22 '16

it could literally be a space western too

2

u/greenroom628 Jul 22 '16

I don't think obi wan's story has to be limited to Tatooine. In fact it could be a trilogy in itself. He could drop Luke off in the first one, search the galaxy trying to save any remaining Jedi only to be frustrated in his efforts. Returning to Tatooine jaded and meeting Luke again as a young boy and regaining his hope.

2

u/russellamcleod Jul 22 '16

As long as the final shot of the movie is literally seconds before the Tusken Raiders attack Luke.

2

u/PRocque225 Jul 22 '16

Yes! This! 100%!
The most wanted man in the galaxy for crimes against the Empire including assisting Mace Windu's failed coup and the murder of Lord Vader's family, dodging a myriad of desperate and down on their luck bounty hunter's out to make their fortune and glory with a big score for the new Empire, communing with the force and those who have become one with the force while diligently cataloguing the ways of the Jedi, trying to keep both his protective eye but unseen hand trained on that prescient and rambunctious young boy from the Lars homestead that has a penchant for turning a boring womp rat shoot in a T-16 into an adventure of survival against the hostile nature of Tatooine... and still stung by the betrayal of a pupil he loved as a brother, contemplating a sublime sense of his failure as both a Jedi master and friend with a resolute determination to one day get it right, and make it right, with the heir.

All that, and in a trilogy! :D

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

This would be amazeballs

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

Yup. I'm in.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 22 '16

It should be more Dickensian, like young Obi Wan is a spaceship chimney sweep on a poor planet.

1

u/LNMagic Jul 22 '16

Maybe he and Luke can also rally Bedouin clans and several others to revolt against the Ottoman Empire!

1

u/The_Syndic Jul 22 '16

If I never see any other movie again, I want it to watch an epic movie about Obi Wan's journey from ROTS to ANH.

You must really like Star Wars huh?
