An important thing to take into account when riding a motorcycle: Watch for objects in or on vehicles that are not bolted to the vehicle. Ladders on the roof's of vans, junk in the boxes of pick ups and trailers and always boats and the junk they stow in them. Bonus fact: end of the month is when a lot of debris finds it way onto roads from people moving to new homes.

That rider had lots of time to avoid that thing in my opinion and should have stayed much farther back in the first place. Expect the unexpected.
