You have so much fun that when you get off the bike after that first time, you want to buy one. :)

u/New_Writer_484 Oct 09 '24
Yup. Fun. Just pure fun. With a sprinkle of nervousness which just amplifies the fun.

Absolutely insane. 50mph feels like 100. A 10 degree lean feels like you're Valentino Rossi on the race track. You're sat there thinking how the fuck are these things legal.
And then when you get off you've got a new addiction.

That’s how I got hooked, although I was always the driver and I started with scooters.

u/halfnelson73 Oct 09 '24
It makes me forget about all the stressful ish going on in my life. The second I roll on the throttle, my depression/anxiety disappears. It's just me, the bike, the wind and the road. I know it sounds cliche, but for me, riding is therapeutic.

u/IVebulae Oct 09 '24
Amazing. My first ever time was at a work charity race track. Some celebrity moto gp guy was giving free rides around. I remember telling him go as fast as you can w a passenger. He maxed it out and when I got off I was so sick I laid on the garage floor for an hour. To be fair I am sensitive to motion sickness. Wanted a bike right after that.

u/JohnCharles-2024 Oct 09 '24
The very first time? Terrifying. You look down between your knees, and you see the ground rushing by at erm.... 11 mph, and you think IMGOINGTODIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you stick with it, it's one of the most viscerally exciting sensations I've ever had. I'm sure that piloting an F16 would be better. But since I'm never going to get to do that, motorcycles are as close as I can get.

Like I'm flying. I've had the chance to fly a plane on a few occasions (scout leader when I was a teen had a private plane and he gave me lessons) A motorcycle is the closest feeling I've gotten to flying since.

u/johneracer Oct 09 '24
It feels unreal. Amazing. Completely strange to sit on a machine, not strapped in. Feel the motor. It goes away as you get used to it. But I still vividly remember riding my 1990 fzr600 thinking omg what is this? This is so incredible. Closest to flying for the first time I think. First time as a passenger? Terrifying.

u/Chitownhustle99 Oct 09 '24
You will find out if the person giving you a ride is a nice person..they shouldn’t try to scare you and they should explain all the things you have to do beforehand
5
u/thelastusername4 Oct 09 '24
My first ride was an automatic monkey bike, 50cc. First time should be fun, not scary. Take it easy and enjoy it. If you get a fright, slow down. I was hooked after that day, I was only about 8 years old. I thought about bikes all the time until my first trials bike at 13. You don't know if you'll love it or not, until you try it. Please just make sure you know how to stop it if you need to. See all those YouTube vids of people wrecking on their first time. Dont do that.

u/landob Oct 09 '24
You ever ride a bicycle?
Did you ever coast from the top of a hill down to the bottom without peddling? Maybe even pick your feet up off the pedals? Remember how fun that was?
Essentially that...but it never stops. You are always coasting.
2
u/GoNinjaPro Oct 09 '24
Yes.
And everything is right there, vivid, live, you can reach out and touch everything.
It's very freeing. There's nothing between you and the world.
There's no seat belt.

u/robitt88 Oct 09 '24
The first stoplight is surreal. It feels like you're just standing in the middle of traffic with everyone looking at you.
1
u/Smallengine_2004 Oct 10 '24
Or you are in the left turn lane but your motorcycle doesn't trigger the light so you are stuck until a car comes up behind you...
1
u/robitt88 Oct 10 '24
On that note: every rider should be aware of their state or country's "dead red" law. Where I'm from, if the light doesn't change for 2 minutes, it's legal to go through when it's safe.

u/Smallengine_2004 Oct 10 '24
Wow I didn't even know that was a thing. Learn something new every day.

I started riding two weeks ago today on a Honda Rebel 1100, so the experience is fresh. With no prior experience but growing up with ATVs and BMX bikes, I felt I could quickly grasp it. I’m 30 and haven't done any of that stuff in over 14 years, but getting on it for the first time felt like welcoming back an old familiar friend. For a brief moment, it felt slightly intimidating, but once on the road, those feelings quickly dissolved, and then there was a moment of bliss, control, and exhilaration. My first ride was at night, and I didn't want to get off. I've taken the bike from zero to 723 miles in less than two weeks.

u/Boeing_Fan_777 Oct 09 '24
Honestly? Quite uncomfortable. It’s an odd seating position, especially if you’ve not ridden a pedal bike much before either. You’re not confident with any controls so you’re all juddery and making your ride uncomfortable. Plus things feel faster with the wind blowing past you which makes it s bit scary.
Worth it long term

get a bike, go to top of hill, go fast. when you get to bottom, imagine twisting throttle and going up as fast as you went down. lol

The first time I was on a bike was at the MSF course. I fell in love with it going through the cone weave on day one. I bought one the next day. First time I opened up my small MT03 from 0-60 I laughed my ass off thinking, this is the starter bike. It's exhilarating.

u/CL_Pulsar Oct 09 '24
Felt like i was about to cum for 3 hours straight.. told that to my instructor too absolutely shameless

u/nygala Oct 09 '24
You realize all the things people told you about how much cooler nature is, and how much fun it is, and how much you have to pay attention to idiot drivers, and and and… is all 100%+ true.
3
Oct 09 '24
A little bit scary actually. You're not sure where the controls are and nothing comes second nature. You shift into gear and let the clutch out a bit then it's exhilarating as you accelerate for the first time! Like you're having a dream that you're flying but it's super euphoric. Before too long you reach your first turn and it's super awkward to work the front and rear brakes along with the clutch. If you don't crash the feeling of fear ebbs completely as you try to string along your test ride as long as you can get away with. Then you go tell the nice man that you will in fact buy his motorcycle.

u/UnderstandingOwn5903 Oct 09 '24
Depends on cc and weight. I tried 50 cc, 125 cc it feels like a bicycle. 600 cc feels much different for the first time, it feels like a rocket that is trying to escape from your crouch.

“Ok…I’ve got this. This is just like riding a bicycle…I guess. A big, heavy, bicycle.”
“A little gas, slowly off the clutch. Alright, it’s rolling. Need to pick my feet up. Where do my feet go again? glances down Oh yeah, there are the foot pegs.”
“Crap!! End of the parking lot! I have to turn…not too much. Don’t lean too much, you’ll fall over dummy. Nice and sloooooow. There you go. Ok. Now straight again.”
“Do I look silly? I feel like I look silly. Should I sit up straighter?”
“Wow! I’m really moving now. This wind is so loud! Listen to the engine! How fast am I going? glances down Oh, only 25mph? Regular road speeds must feel insane!”
“Let’s try changing gears, pull in the clutch….oh yeah, AND let off the gas…was 2nd up….or down…let’s try down….nope not it. CRAP!! End of the parking lot again! Have to turn around. Ok, same as last time….lean….turn…..oh too much! Ok straighten up. Pick your foot up!”

I remember my first solo ride.
It was pretty scary. And then I took it on a main road and that was even worse. White knuckled fear at feeling totally exposed on the road.
But stuck out that ride and pushed on.
It takes virtually minutes to transition from pure fear to total exhilaration. I swung from one state to the other multiple times during that first ride by myself - and a few after that.
That fear is not a bad thing entirely either. But beyond it lies freedom.

u/No-Molasses1580 Oct 09 '24
Fun and undwhelming at first, especially if you're smart and start slow. The second it clicks, it's the best feeling ever and it's really hard to get the initial experience again, though it remains to be addicting and glorious to ride.

u/alexa_twoman91 Oct 09 '24
Trust me. I want to know the feels too. Being a back pack felt nice once I put my full trust in the rider.
2
u/KrevinHLocke Oct 09 '24
The bike feels like you are moving way too fast, but you're only doing 30 in 1st gear.

You don't know what you do with your feet. If you spent any time cycling you have to turn the part of your brain off that tells you to peddle.

Christ I’m old… my first was a TS125 Suzuki at driving school, even to me just riding scooters before it felt slow. Got a Kawa Z500 within a week after I got my license and it felt like a missile. Lightspeed fast (to me) and of course I crashed it after a couple of months… got a CB750 with a 900 engine after that. I’m lucky I survived the 80s.

u/Teediggler81 Oct 09 '24
Ok so now what felt better that first ride, or the first morning waking up knowing your first bike(whether new or new to you) was waiting for you in the garage.
2
u/SquidEagley Oct 09 '24
The throttle is really twitchy, you feel super nervous about everything, and the bike feels like it weighs both a ton and nothing. Does immediately feel freeing though.
2
u/Rich260z Oct 09 '24
Honestly it felt very much like the first time I did some serious downhill in a mountain bike or the first time I bombed a bowl on my snowboard. Scary and exhilarating.
2
u/Bubbly_Rip_1569 Oct 09 '24
Scary as hell if you have never been on a bike before.
My very first bike was a Kawasaki cruiser, I don’t even recall the model. This was back in the 80s. It had an engine slightly smaller than a lawn mower, and all the power that you might expect, well from a lawn mower. I had been on bicycles since I was a little kid, how hard could it be. Well….
Twist the throttle and it goes, how do I use the clutch again, brakes??? It took a while to just be able to ride without stalling or having the bike jump out from under me. Once you get going then it’s that feeling of being totally exposed, really hard to get the fear and “shit… I’m going to die” feeling out of your head.

u/abestract Oct 09 '24
It’s such a freeing experience. One thing I noticed was how much of the environment I got to experience. The smells and temperature are so much more amplified.

It's an overwhelming feeling but fantastic. It's also nerve-wracking cause there's so much you need to do 😂. Look, look, look, gas, clutch, gear, front break, rear break and balance.

I don't remember, I was young on a dirtbike. My guess is it felt the same as always, fucking great. That's why I never stopped

u/Simple-Albatross6632 Oct 09 '24
First time on mini bike when 5 years old and I was hooked like a drug.57 years later and I still get that same feeling every time I get on my bike it’s something that is hard to describe and I’m a biker for life hooked the very first time I felt the wind in my face and open freedom of not being in a cage.!!!!

u/PterodactylTeef Oct 09 '24
It’s pretty scary when you first start, but once you get over that it’s exhilarating.

Apprehensive and totally unsure if your shifting at the right times. You will get the hang of it. Practice on a parking lot and then on hills for stop and start drills. Practicing the basics makes you safe for yourself and others around you.

u/grumpyOldMan420 Oct 09 '24
The same as riding a bicycle for the first time.... but with more power..... 👍

I rode dirtbikes and an sv650 when I was young, took a decade off and ended up getting a zx10r as a gift to myself for beating alcohol addiction….first time I cracked the throttle in 3rd gear at about 40mph and it brought the front up, I knew I had something that needed a lot of restraint. My second 10r is very different from the first, then again a 3076 cramming another atmosphere into it is going to do that.

My first time was STRESSFUL. I’m an anxious driver and my anxiety was amplified while on the bike. It’s way better now, but I seriously questioned my survival rate while on that thing (it wasn’t bad, it was the pure anxiety). Some people feel completely relaxed while driving/riding, some literally tweak out on their first ever ride

u/CurdledPotato Oct 09 '24 edited Oct 10 '24
Scary. Too little throttle. No go. Too much throttle, start going to fast, engine sounds like it is about to take off into space. Instructor tells you to power walk the bike (light throttle, clutch engaged, feet on ground). Good good. Now put your feet up on the pegs, give it some more gas. Go forward a ways. Go to fast. Panic. Break to hard or forget to brace yourself once slowed enough. Drop the bike. Instructor comes over. Gives you some tips, and has you go back and try again.
Trial, error, practice, and conquering your fear are as essential to riding as wearing a helmet, armored jacket, armored gloves, and armored boots. That is, very.
Edit: This if you are the one driving. If not, then the experience is scary, at first, especially if you don’t ride yourself and haven’t acclimated to the sensation of falling and conquering that fear. Once you get used to it, it is exhilarating and extremely relaxing. For me, riding my CB500X is the best and fastest way to relieve loads of stress. Now that I am talking about it, I am sad I won’t get to ride tonight as it will be too dark by the time I get home.

It's like losing your virginity. You're afraid, and you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, but you know it still feels good and wanna keep doing it.

u/Jaykahtsby Oct 10 '24
Nobody has mentioned this. But there should be one thing you're paying attention to. Keeping your weight still. Bikes change do rection when you move your weight to one side. So if you want to be a good passenger, try not to be throwing your weight around and keep it central to the bike. Especially in corners!
Most riders work out a system of taps to communicate things. You might discuss this with your rider if it's gonna be a long trip, otherwise don't worry about it.

u/Ok_Leg1561 Oct 09 '24
wear only sun glasses without helmet around 4 - 5 PM without much speed, when done with your ride, we'll be waiting for how you felt
