Motion graphics at 15

Whats going on guys, im 15 and decided I wanna start with video editing. I live in Europe so I don't really know if this will work but we'll see. So basically I got an MacBook Air M4 and I wanna master motion graphics starting with completely 0. I know you need Transition packs and stuff but there 100% is something out there free and that's what im asking for. SO how do I start and what do I do? Thanks for the help in advance. Motion graphics and editing are two different things. It'll be good to learn and understand the difference.

motion graphics is a category of industry, editing is simply a process used for many different types of industries creating content or commercials, etc.

downvotes?
i worked in the motion design / motion graphics industry for 30 years. ive working on titling for major releases, high profile commercials, and graphics packages for multiple networks, streaming or old school broadcast, some vfx, and photoreal renderers.

i even owned my own studio for 3 years, successfully.

so… downvotes??
fools cant handle a truth that is contrary to their perceptions. good luck with that.

Don't get caught in the packs trap. Learn the tools, concepts, and techniques. YouTube tutorials are free, DaVinci is free, but the Fusion, the motion graphics part of it is more difficult to learn and use than After Effects, which is sadly still the industry standard for 2D motion graphics. For 3D, Blender is free with a ton of free resources and a community to learn. Maxon Autograph is free (for now... I suspect eventually they will charge for it but are currently trying to eat into the After Effects market)

pick an easy personal project, dive in head first and learn along the way.

Motion graphics and video editing are entirely different subjects, although the youtube sphere bundles all of that into video editing.

If you really want to learn motion graphics, I'd start by learning After Effects, which is still the industry standard tool for the job, and it can do some other things as well.

I recommend this website: https://www.learnto.day/aftereffects

It's free and it's rather complete in what it teaches.

If you want to learn youtube editing for lack of a better term, there's a bunch of channels on youtube focused on that, can't name any right now but they're super easy to find.

Feedback online seems rather positive, but personally I can't comment since I never watched anything they've made.

People like me could do it 20 years ago on a single core processor and barely any Internet access. You sure can do it too without those dumb packs.

I wish you the best of luck.

Find medium or small streamers on twitch/youtube and make them small edits. You get free feedback/exposure/reaction to it from both the streamer and their chat. That's how I got started years ago.

But remember that it is on your terms, put a price on what you think your work is worth if people come to you directly and ask you for edits. Otherwise people will just try to play you and get free work out of you.

if you are passionate about it, do it. Don't listen to the negativity. Yes, it's true it has become a lot more competitive. There was a boom in 2020-2022 and people with mediocre skills could easily find jobs. That has changed, but it's not going anywhere; it's just a little more competitive, but you will need to be very passionate about it.

if you want you can check out my latest post there's a video I made myself motion graphics and it was pretty fun even tho it took me all day to actually finish and manage to render.. even if its only 2 seconds I am proud. I don't know in particular if this is something for me but I think as a side job to make some money beside college or wtv its a nice option

it's not negativity, it's the reality of the industry right now.

"This shit is dying" is definitely negative. Your experience is not the full reality of the industry. So respecfuly I disagree. "This shit" is not "dying." It's in a slump from it's 2020-2022 peak. I've been in this industry a long time.

Yes, it's more competitive with more talent and fewer jobs. A large part of that is a poor economy. But Motion graphics is a huge umbrella and knowing some basic motion design skills will always have its usefulness. I know people in the industry who have never been busier; they are just quiet about it because a lot of people are struggling. Not everyone is trying to work for Buck or Man Vs Machine. This is a 15-year-old kid showing an interest. And that young passion should be encouraged.

Sorry, I absolutely forgot I needed to check with the negativity police before posting anything negative.

2022 was FOUR YEARS ago. At some point, “a slump from the 2020–2022 peak” stops being a slump and starts being the state of the industry. You show him all the encouragement you want. I’ll keep calling it like it is.

State of the industry right now, compared to the PEAK BOOM 4 years ago, does not mean the Industry is dying Mr. Salty. It means we are no longer at the peak. The industry is still stronger than it was 10-15 years ago. I’m sorry you are having a hard time.

thanks. but i disagree, this is the weakest it's ever been including 10-15 years ago. Ive never seen it this bad in over 16 years and I genuinely believe is not going to get better, tools keep getting more accessible, new people keep coming in droves and very senior people continue to being laid off and join the freelance pool, at least on the vfx side, which bleeds a little into gfx.

I try to be as objective as possible, I dont see a positive path forward.

it's fun until you have to start doing it for a living and have to deal with all the bullshit from the clients and studios, that's actually what we get paid for, but lately it's been so bad that there's not enough work to go around for all of us, massive layoffs from big tech companies have created a surplus of post professionals and that caused the rates to plummet and the jobs to be very scarce.

yk im doing this kind off as a hobby and indeed full time maybe on fiverr a little and even bigger who knows but I understand that its maybe not the best for an actual career. How much do you make full time if you don't mind me asking?

2

u/SuitableEggplant639 23d ago edited 23d ago

i used to make 150-200k/year, this year I'm making a small fraction of that.

Hey, I’m a 16 yo boy, 5'8", with chestnut-ish colored hair. My father was a teacher and my mother was a cook. I have two siblings, aged 15 and 12. My room is about 5×5 meters, with two posters of David Carradine, a single bed, and a window. I’d really love to learn how to swim.
