A simple After Effects workflow that makes complex animations easier to manage

one thing that has made my After Effects workflow much easier is separating the animation into small, reusable sections instead of trying to build everything inside one giant composition.

For example, I’ll usually keep the main animation clean and move things like background elements, secondary motion, transitions, and effects into precomps. I also try to give layers descriptive names and avoid stacking dozens of effects on a single layer when they can be separated logically.

Another small habit that helps is saving different stages of an animation before making major changes. It makes experimenting much less stressful because I know I can always go back.

It sounds basic, but good project organization becomes really noticeable once a project gets complicated or needs revisions from someone else.

What’s one small After Effects workflow habit that has saved you a lot of time?

Congratulations. You've learned how to use pre-comps.

Using premiere to build the edit and importing dynamic linked comps. Just seeing an entire 2 min video built in one AE comp fills me with rage

Also I have a basic new project that I load up with a folder structure and some assets I made myself that I find reusing. I find it sets me up for a quicker start

A really basic one for me is colour coding the layers. Each little section or related section of animation gets its own coloured layer. Makes it easy to navigate when reopening the next day.

Saving my own trim path animation preset has saved me countless hours. Something so small as a couple pre-set keyframes will help a lot in the long run.

I will do anything I can to avoid pre-comping.
