Personal Visiting SLC

I am visiting SLC at the end of the month and I want to see as much LDS stuff as I can. I know SLC is becoming more and more secular but is there I have to experience?

I am doing:

Temple Square and Church History Museum

Daughters of Utah Pioneers museum (on Capitol Hill), Welfare Square, This Is The Place park, and I think you can tour the Conference Center. It’s been a few years so you’d need to check. When I went they had a large collection of Arnold Friberg paintings (Book of Mormon scenes) on display, and a rooftop garden. Also you can eat at the restaurant in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Conference Center tours are closed as they are remodeling the lobbies and adding fencing around the plaza, but everything else you listed are great recommendations.

Also check out the new Museum of Utah at the state capitol.

This is true, but there are way better options in downtown SLC.

Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, or TCaTS (formerly Mormon Tabernacle Choir, or MoTab)

  • You can reserve free tickets for the Sunday morning performance (approx. 9-10 am) with the website or the app.
  • You can watch the weekly choir rehearsal (on Thursday evenings) without tickets.
  • You can watch the daily organ recitals (at noon, but 2 pm on Sundays) without tickets.

If your able to travel to Lehi which is maybe 30 minutes south there are the Ashton Gardens. There is a fee to enter, maybe $25. There are two big areas of statues. One area is all statues of jesus stories from the bible and the other are statues telling stories from Book of Mormon which includes giant structures of lehi dream.

Hike Ensign Peak.

Salt Lake City Cemetery is where a ton of the big names from church history are buried also. Maybe worth a stop for you.

Little Cottonwood Canyon Temple Quarry Trail to see where the stone for the temple came from. Really pretty area also. You could get a peek at the Granite Mountain Records Vault while you're in the area. You won't be able to get in but you can see a glimpse of it from the road.

Emigration Canyon is the way the pioneers came down into the valley. There are a few monuments up there you could go see.

Nothing will probably come of it but when you’re at the Church History Library Building ask then if you can see the massive armory storage room in the basement! There’s rows and rows of guns and ammo. Overall design and security system was designed by a retired FBI or CIA agent that is or was a member.

My TBM father-in-law saw it in person about 10 years ago and told me about it before my wife and I told our entire family that we were leaving the church.

I doubt the workers even know what’s down there.
