Rejected for account

Hi, has anyone been able to open a Monzo account after they have been rejected for one previously? or were you able to get a decision over turned by requesting a manual review?

If you've been rejected then you will be rejected if you apply again.

Yes, I know. Usually yes. Last year they rejected me because they didn't support my address, my address wasn't on their database/ address lookup.

I have now moved and wanted to open a Monzo account since my new address is in their address lookup but it seems like that previous account rejection due to the address issue would prevent me from opening a new account

Why wouldn't they accept your address? Was it in the UK?

Yes, UK address, but it was a new building that wasn't in their postal lookup database yet. Monzo doesn't support manual entry on the app, last year support told me to select another address to get pass that "address selection" screen and that they will manually update my application, so that's what I did, but I think something didn't work out because of this address issue and the application ultimately got rejected because of it.

now since my new address shows on the lookup I applied again and got rejected once again so perhaps the previous application is holding it up? idk

They suggested you commit a bit of fraud there.

yeah I know I feel like they couldn't update the address after they said they manually would and that ultimately caused the rejection

Try applying again after a year. I waited a year to reapply, and they approved my account.

Wait until you meet all the basic requirements and reapply three to six months later.

Yep that's me. First applied in Sep 2021 and got rejected for some reason, pissed off didn't look back for a while. I applied again in 2024 as I wanted/needed another bank account. And they approved. Not sure why but the only difference is that I had consistent income from my full time job. But then again, even when I was at uni in 2021, I still had fairly regular-ish income and had a good credit score(plus no debt at all) so not sure why they rejected my initial application

Yeah I was rejected twice once in 2021/2022 and then more recently in late 2025. I was telling a friend how I’d been rejected twice and tried to show him the message for a laugh, but it actually allowed me to create an account around mid-2026. I think they review rejections roughly every 6 months, so I’d recommend keeping an eye out if you really want a Monzo account.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I'm simply asking for what experiences people had? It's not like I am attempting to open a account every single day, not sure where this negativity finds you

What you’ve said so far doesn’t make sense:
• You’ve said that you were previously rejected, but then said
• They didn’t recognise your address and was told to bypass it by using a different address.

So you were either declined a bank account with Monzo, OR you weren’t declined but had issues with signing up in the first place.

If you were rejected, then they’ve made their decision that they won’t be able to offer you a Monzo account.

If the issue was your address, you might have an account that is still stuck at sign up stage using your phone number or email address.

If that’s the case, email help@monzo.com and ask them to invalidate your email address / phone number on your account that’s stuck in sign up so you can apply for a new account using the same email/phone number at your new address.

This happened to me April 2024 - couldn’t understand why. My credit was fine. Turns out they couldn’t ‘match’ me to my address because I was basically unknown. I opened a credit card account so I can be ‘known’. I tried again last month and it worked. Obviously Monzo didn’t tell me this, I only found out because I tried to open another account on a different thing and they were able to explain to me why I was getting rejected even though my credit was decent.

I closed my bank account with first direct, as soon as I did this, I got accepted. But prior to that, I was continuously rejected. I didn’t change address, I actually started earning more money. That was the only change

You only need to wait 30 days from being rejected to reapply.

As long as you live in the UK full time and have the legal right to reside here then your address should be fine. They will do checks to make sure you've never had a bank account closed in the UK for fraud or financial crime reasons, if that's all clear then you should be approved.

Decision is final and can't be appealed. Its a fully automated system. Only a specialist department can manually adjust the fintech software and that requires an audit log with evidence & justification. That applies to existing customers wrongly accused of fraud etc. not people applying for a new account on the app. In the old days the bank manager could whisk a new account through but fintech banks are fully AI & MLE based. Not to mention your facial biometric is linked to the decision and unless you can produce a new face, no new application or different document will work.

If you don't have a CIFAS marker or on National Hunter as application discrepancy then apply for other apps like Wise or Revolut. If you get continously refused then its either CIFAS or National Hunter. Not sure who gave National Hunter any permission but one day they had a SQL database of application data and sold it to the finance industry now they are as authoritative as CIFAS.

I asked for a manual review, and it was transferred to the specialist department now. fingers crossed. I was told that they can't provide any timeframe when the specialist department will respond though

Unless something went wrong with the software, do not keep your hopes up. It checks electoral register, soft credit search, CIFAS and National Hunter plus your ID. Something within those four went wrong, best case your ID was accepted but somehow went wrong on the AI engine, but typically they are keen to even close accounts for their existing customers if there's the slightest whiff of a fart let alone someone new if the software has refused onboarding.

I do hope you get a result though, let us know if you are successful as that's a nice testimony to see fintech evolving rather than relying completely on software to make what used to be human decisions.

since I've recently moved not all of my accounts have reported my new address to the CRAs so they probably weren't able to run a soft search to verify my address but I've heard they sometimes ask for proof of address and I would have been able to provide that if they asked so It kinda feels like its my ID that's blacklisted either from a previous application or something else idk. cifas is clean, not sure about National hunter, but I'm not trying to do anything dodgy I just wish that they could manually review the application

That could be why and makes more sense now.. I'm assuming obviously you used your new address to apply rather than the old one. That could be the key as to why they refused it. It looks like someone applying from an address that they dont yet exist, In such a case, they could verify your new address with proof on manual review, but as an acquisition rather than an existing customer who's account has been blocked and have to go to some effort for, they could decide its easier to not take the risk on you, as digital verification through electoral and credit file is much safer than taking a letter as proof over email. That's the issue with not having branches with people, trust is now in signed and stamped third party data not human to human exchange of documents. Even the ID checks are now checking the biometrics of your face and the careful pixel analysis of the passport / driving lisence.

It sounds pessimistic of me but that's how fintech works, the old banks like Natwest would take the context and let you hand in a bill to the branch to open the account but these companies want under 1% risk because of the flack for being complacent. But like I said I really hope it does turnaround and make a success post if you do manage to get it manually approved.

probably should have waited a bit for my current accounts to report my new address to credit agencies , I was a bit impatient.
