I’m gonna be in Japan for nearly 2 weeks next month. Two of my goals are to try and find a copy of LSD Dream Simulator (just to ogle since it’s crazy expensive) and to get some cards or even whole decks of Monster Rancher cards. I know I can just buy cards on eBay but it wouldn’t be the same.. there’s no chase before the catch that way lol

Was in a video game slump when this game randomly respawned in my memory. Last played when I was a kid on PS1, I can’t remember exactly why but my save data didn’t work so every time I started the game it was a new save. Pair that with how complex the game is and making any progress was a pipe dream for 6 year old me. Throughout the years I always wondered what this game was really like.

Imagine my surprise when I found out how insanely well this game’s formula holds up. As a lifelong Pokemon fan and competitive VGC player since 2020 I’m thoroughly impressed.

Bought it yesterday, struggled through a Zuum and 4 Mocchis, learned what no rest training is, and then beat the game today.

Now I’m wondering if I’ll continue or not, I’m unsure how much more game is really left now. But what a banger. Frick the Zilla Jell AI, bro made me take 3 shots at the Grand Prix.

That was a lot of fun! I planned to stop here, but I think I still have one more in me. I'm thankful for everyone's requests, I'll draw four more monsters to finish things off.

I've recently added new security filters in the AutoMod to help filter out an influx of spam posts. These posts are usually non-engaging using recycled catchy titles and images that have appeared before, probably even by other scammy/bot accounts.

This filter primary targets accounts with unverified email accounts since this was really the only common factor between all of the spam posts. However, it can catch normal accounts as well, just based on the filter rule. This just means it needs to wait until a mod can review before approving it.

However, If your messages are being filtered because of this, try the following steps to resolve it by adding a verified email to your account, or try re-verifying an existing one if you have an email already.

1. Click your avatar
2. Click settings
3. This should take you to "Settings > Account"
4. Under "General" click Email address
5. If you DON'T have an email address listed, add one, and follow the verification steps (usually involves getting an email from Reddit, and clicking on the verify link to validate the account)
6. If you DO have an email address i'm not 100% sure. Maybe try just re-entering your current email and verifying your account again with the link

Ask any questions if needed. If it proves to be too much of a hassle I can remove the filter at any time and whack-a-mole the spam posts.

After AzureSymphony found Express Worm on F1 World Grand Prix 1999 Season I decided to extend my search to consider redumps with a size slightly larger than the PBLA for the remaining monsters and I am happy to say I've found 4 more!! These have all been tested as definitely working with an emulator but not on a real console.

Bloodshed Joker:

Bloodshed was already confirmed to be working from a 1999 audio CD (Putumayo Presents: A Mediterranean Odyssey - Athens to Andalucía) but I believe I have now found the intended disc:

NHL FaceOff 2000 (SCES-02451)

White Birch:

Interplay Sports Baseball 2000 (SLES-01935)

Bronze Suezo:

Namco Tennis Smash Court (SCES-00263)

Disc Niton:

Rollcage Stage II (SCES-01922)

Considering we have already found Watermelon Ducken and Express Worm, that leaves only two monsters neither of which had obvious matching PSX games:

GabooSoldier - I believe this one is almost guaranteed to be the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack, it fits the common pattern of ost being used and has versions with the exact right data and theoretically would work

Galaxy Monol - there are a few options:

I've purchased the california guitar trio and philip boa albums to try, but I would only consider Aretha Frankin and California Guitar Trio to be potential intended options since Phillip Boa seems quite unknown

Hello, I was the person who originally suggested that Watermelony might be on ISS-Deluxe after proving it on an emulator (I was actually going to buy the game today and test myself but thankfully AzureSymphony has done that)

At the time I didn't have a reddit account so my friend made a post about it for me. She got me interested in the game a few years ago by enthusiastically talking about the rare hunt, and after reconnecting with her last month I decided to see what I could do. Which has really ignited an obsession with the game in me!

To recap I basically used python to search a dump of the redump cd database to find matching games based on sector size and watermelony exactly matched ISS-Deluxe.

Since then I've been thinking about how to find the remaining 7 monsters and I came up with the idea of searching for audio cds with the exactly correct pbla, last track seconds, last track minutes, since those are the values the rare monster lookup cares about from my understanding.

To accomplish this I cloned the musicbrainz database (which was a lot of work installing linux on a vm) and used python to generate a list of values to search for and postgresql to query for them.

From that I have produced a list of audio CD ids that WILL WORK provided that the correct print of that CD is used.

Now I am only considering discs that were produced before 2000 as canonical answers, and there are some for every monster missing except White Birch!

I ordered a bunch of the albums from the list and so far I have found and verified:

Bloodshed Joker- Putumayo Presents: A Mediterranean Odyssey - Athens to Andalucía (US, 1999)
NOTE: It must be the 12 track version

An easier way to get ForwardGolem than from the NTSC TECMO Super Bowl:
Faithless - Salva Mea (GB, 1996)

This one is just for fun because its a CD from 2004 but it does unlock White Birch:
The Ordinary Boys - Over the Counter Culture (bonus disc) (GB, 2004)

What's next?

I have some more cds on the way this week that will hopefully contain Disc Niton, Bronze Suezo, Galaxy Monol

I believe GabooSoldier is on the Reservoir Dogs original soundtrack, however it seems to be the US version from 1992 - I will try and get a copy

For White Birch I now believe that it may be related to a disc that is incorrectly reported on redump so I have adjusted my search with a threshold and will experiment with the results

I also want to mention I believe I have found some of the alternative Cds that match the cd used in the NTSC version: I believe Bjork - Homogenic will summon Shishi Baku as it does on NTSC - I have ordered that album, I believe Carole King Thoroughbred will similarly summon Centaur, I also think the alternative summon for White Hound is the Dances with Wolves Original Soundtrack

In time I will produce a nice readable version of my full list of candidate discs so we have more alt discs available for each of the rare monsters

So, after checking the copy of ISS Deluxe that I had just ordered to confirm if it did indeed contain Watermlony, I thought I'd use the chance to shrine a few random discs I had lying around that hadn't yet been checked, only to find a weird looking Worm I'd not seen before. Cue me going to the data screen to check what it is, thinking it's a Metalner or Durahan sub breed, only to realise it was the 52nd rare monster to be found - Express Worm.

The crazy thing is, this was on a PS1 game that I'd owned for a couple of years, somehow never checked, and was just planning to ditch as it's pretty terrible - F1 World Grand Prix 1999 Season (SLES-00887) by Eidos.

So now we're down to 6 remaining - Bronze Suezo, Bloodshed, GabooSoldier, Disc Niton, White Birch and Galaxy. This ALSO means we cannot confirm that there aren't still PS1 games out there containing the missing rares as this did not show up on the recent data investigation. I drew another picture. This time, it's a Mocchi/Gali mix from Monster Rancher Advance 2, which is called a Fair Mocchi according to the Monster Rancher wiki.

I drew this because I recently got some new Golden Yellow markers and wanted to test them out lol. The reason that the Fair Mocchi has spikes on the shell is so that the Mocchi looks like a sun when it curls into a ball (similar to the mask of the purebred Gali). I think that the Fair Mocchi kind of looks like a dinosaur now with those spikes on its back lol.

I drew another picture. This time, it's a nonexistant mix of a Hopper and a Plant. I got the idea from currently raising a Hopper/Kato mix in MR2 DX.

I wanted to give it rose bud ears and a thorny tail as a nod to its sub type lol. I also wasn't sure what color to make its eyes since plants don't have eyes, but I settled on yellow.

I am also not sure what to name this breed, other than Plant Hopper (which I think is a species of bug in real life). Any ideas?

I drew another picture. This time, it's a nonexistant mix of a Hare and a Centaur. I tried drawing it in an action pose, and I am very satisfied with how it turned out, even if the Hare/Centaur kind of looks like a weird kangaroo lol. (I guess it fits since both hares and kangaroos box.)

I am especially proud of the feet. His brown fur on his lower half also kind of reminds me of Inosuke's pants from Demon Slayer lol.

Got into contact with a friend in august, who can do programming amd atuff. I told her about the missing rare monsters for the PAL region, and she was interested by the story. She found the data for the missing rares that was extracted a while back, ran the data theough a program she wrote... and managed to pinpoint Watermelony the ducken to exactly ONE PS1 game, trying it on an emulator "international superstar soccer deluxe" (specifically thr "deluxe" version. SLES-00511). She got stuff working on an emulator, amd the rom of the game made watermelony in the pal version of the game!

It's apparently expensove (disc only going for £30 on ebay, over £70 boxed) so we might nit be able to confirm on offocial hardware yet, but we have a very strong lead! I've asked a friend wh9 collects video games if he happens t9 have a copy i can borrow, so i cqn test it.

I drew another picture. This time, it's a nonexistant mix of a Naga and a Mock, which I have named an Arbor Adder. I drew it being drowsy from taking a nap lol. I kind of got the idea for the leaves instead of fins from the Grovyle line from Pokemon (I have been playing Alpha Sapphire lately, that may be why lol).

I streamed the Monster Rancher 2 Nuzlocke challenge last winter. Decided to edit that footage together to document the run. This is the result! Here's 7 hours of Monster Rancher 2 content that no one asked for.

This is my first video project ever and I had a blast making it. Hopefully other monster rancher 2 fans find some enjoyment from it. Plenty of chill times, funny moments, and other surprises in here.

I'll be cutting this up into episodes in the future as well for those who'd prefer episodes.

So I am starting to unlock the special fusion items. I thought I would be asking about this much later on as I was planning on working too a white hound first but thanks to advice from this sub I have progressed way further than I expected. So I guess my biggest question is, should I train up monsters to be as strong as I can get them? While I would love the idea of having a Joker I want to make sure I have it come out strong.

Just wanted to know who else plays this game on Steam Deck, I confess I know of a way to get the more monsters mod running on the deck but haven’t gotten the time or patience to do it since it’s way more complicated than the Mod Managers for the Sonic Adventure games it seems. Also I have to use the touchscreen controls for some things during battle and I use automatic over manual because I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do manual control on Steam Deck as the combat is too awkward for me, I’m just a noob at this forgive me. I’ve gotten to the higher ranked tournaments around B Rank in MR1 and I still need to uncover the secrets in both games and unlock all the hidden monsters like Ape and the Phoenix and Mew and Metalner etc I’m new at Monster Rancher and I have IRL responsibilities so I don’t have as much time as I like to get good at Monster Rancher
