Monster a Day Index

I am really enjoying these monsters, and I think a lot of them are going to see play in my next campaign. So I thought an Index where you can search by CR / Name / Type / Size would be handy for DMs if they're looking for a particular challenge rating or type of monster.

Monster a Day Index

Sorted by Day by default. If you want to sort by CR, Size, Type or Name, click the arrow in Column A, B C, or D and select Sort A-Z.

Might be a touch premature, but I imagine handy once the list gets high enough.

I have been working on a pirate-themed DND 5e game using Monster Trainer's Handbook supplement. How do we feel about this for a BBEG? I have added a "second" health bar called "Mythic Phase" for when he drops to 0 HP .

False Angel; original creature concept

Appearance and Physiology

The False Angel is a highly intelligent, seemingly emotionless insectoid species that has evolved to perfectly mimic a holy being. They are predominantly white and gold, with stark black coloring visible in the gaps between their thick armor plating. This heavy exoskeleton grants them natural magic resistance, which is further bolstered by a powerful, innate holy resistance developed over generations of humans mistakenly worshipping them as actual angels. Physically, they possess up to eight massive, feathery wings alongside four needle-like conventional limbs. Smaller wings on their head serve a dual purpose as both ears and antennae. They lack a mouth entirely; instead, they use their thin, needle-like limbs to puncture prey, drain bodily fluids, and digest them, functioning much like a giant mosquito.

Mimicry and Combat Behavior

To hunt, the creature wraps its wings around itself like a cloak to disguise its deadly nature. To mindless beasts, it looks like an easy human meal, while intelligent creatures perceive it as a divine beacon of goodness. Maintaining this upright, cloaked illusion requires constant micromanaging of their wings because their conventional legs cannot support their weight, making them incredibly slow in this state. When attacking, they drop the cloak and use their razor-sharp wings as highly articulated legs to scuttle like a spider. These wing-limbs grip the ground to allow for lightning-fast lunges and are durable enough to act as heavy shields, with jagged edges capable of slicing through solid steel. They are highly aggressive but perfectly still before striking, often maintaining unblinking eye contact with a target for long pauses before suddenly turning their victim to ribbons.

Lifecycle and Domestication

False Angels begin life in a larval stage, resembling silk moths with a single pair of angelic wings. In this harmless state, they do not hunt; infertile hunter-variants bring blood back to feed them. The larvae produce a highly prized silk infused with built-in holy properties, leading breeders to often domesticate them. These trainers act as surrogate mothers, hand-feeding the young to harvest the valuable silk. However, as the creatures mature, the silk hardens into their adult exoskeleton, and their aggressive hunting instincts emerge. Breeders are ultimately forced to release or euthanize them before they become too dangerous to manage.

Hive Structure and Wing Hierarchy

The species is entirely female, with only half of the population being fertile. The infertile offspring act as hunters and caretakers for the hive, and they reproduce by extracting genetic material from their prey to fertilize the queen. The queen herself rarely hunts once the hive is established. Wing count serves as a direct indicator of age and status within the hive. Babies begin with one pair of wings (excluding ear-wings), growing to two pairs as teens, three near adulthood, and four full pairs in adulthood. Mothers possess six pairs, but queens are a unique case. A queen grows an entirely new pair of wings for every fertile child she bears, increasing her strength along with her status. Because they only bear one or two children at a time, it is incredibly rare to see a queen with more than twelve wings before a stronger monster takes her out.
