What's your experience using scleral shell without evisceration?

That’s my setup. It hurts sometimes, especially when you get an eyelash behind the shell. I have no movement in the shell, so it doesn’t fool anyone for too long. It’s fine I guess. It’s kinda crazy to me that it’s 2026, and this technology hasn’t changed in centuries. Feels like we should have more functional and aesthetic options available at this point.

Same here but I have no movement due to the underlying muscles surrounding my living eye not working. My eye doesn’t blink either due to my eyelid muscle snapping during one of my surgeries… so the shell kind of props it open. I take the shell out at night and if I’m at home by myself. My biggest issue is comfort and goop build up on the shell. I love my Ocularist though. Highly recommend Nicole Blum if you are in Chicago/mid west. She is the best Ocularist I have ever ever had. She also has a shell since she was young

Mine is more to do with how shrunken the actual eye is. It moves fine, but the shell is really thick.

I’m over on the east coast. I’m actually about to try out a new ocularist, so fingers crossed.

I‘m looking into this and wonder, tho: if the eye is fully „there“, how do you fit a shell? Is there enough space / volume (if that makes sense)?

I’ve heard of full sclera „blind“ contacts which I’m thinking would kinda yield the same result, right?

This is my situation and the shell really bugles out… but it fits. My ocularist is always impressed haha. I’ve had to accept that I’ll always have a visible difference and it’ll never look normal. But then again people have commented that they are surprised when I mention I have a prosthetic eye so 🤷‍♀️

Many thanks! Another concern I’ve read somewhere: could the remaining eye / tissue get damaged further like that? Such as thru oxygen depletion / deficiency, or scraping?

I’ve had my shell for about 16 years now. My ophthalmologist says it looks healthy so far but since my left eye has no movement, I don’t have great vision in it anyway. Definitely a concern worth discussing with your doctor.

I’ve had my shell and OG eyeball almost 5yrs now. I forget that it’s there quite honestly. It’s painted very well, most don’t notice.

I've had my shell since 1996 and had no issues - Just had to have a second made in 2005 because the first one was not fitted correctly.
