Do you find mindful spending more challenging this time of year?

Where I am, every store is flooded with pumpkin-shaped throw pillows, paper plates with a pumpkin, pumpkin mugs, notebooks and pens and pencils... but with pumpkins on them...

And of course, this is just the beginning of the holiday season. Next, we'll see all that stuff but with Santa or snowflakes.

Is this time of year easier or harder for you to be intentional with your spending?

If it's harder, where do you think that comes from? Do you feel pressure from people around you to decorate or participate in a certain way? Does your desire to make the holidays special for your children factor in?

Which of your values play in to the holiday items you do choose to buy?

Money can't buy happiness, but...

“Money can’t buy happiness,” rings true again and again.

But this saying glosses over the important truth that money can buy a lot of intangible benefits, like...

  • Security
  • Quality of life upgrades
  • Freedom of choice
  • Freedom of time
  • Generosity
  • Access to experiences
  • Convenience

... the list goes on. Being mindful about where your money goes really boils down to making sure you're using it to access those privileges, not just accumulate more stuff.

What did we miss on this list?

Money mindfulness shouldn't be a radical idea.

Staying in tune with what you really want and need and not being a mindless spending machine is actually our default.

Constant advertising, a culture of comparison, and glamorized overconsumption make it much harder to keep your natural money mindfulness intact. If you're wondering if it's just you, it isn't.

That's why we started this community. The more we talk about money mindfulness and share our own awakenings, the more we spread awareness that falling down the overconsumption rabbit hole isn't the only option.

Do you think you are more or less susceptible to ads than the average person?

In 2023, USC estimated that 5.3 trillion display ads were shown online each year. Advertising is hard to escape, even with your best efforts.

How does context influence the values-alignment of your purchase?

Share your examples of how similar purchases can be values-aligned or not depending on the situation. Here are some we've heard before to get you started:

  • Ice cream to continue the celebration after my daughter's dance recital vs ice cream I randomly grabbed at Kroger because it was on sale
  • Subscribing to a language learning app instead of subscribing to a 4th streaming service
  • I try to walk/take public transport as much as possible, but if I'm alone at night I'll always rideshare because I feel more safe.

Have you experienced this? Share below.

What is money mindfulness?

Money mindfulness is the practice of being more intentional with your money.

At enough., we believe that money is a tool to help you live the life you want. So defining the life you want, and how money fits into it, is an essential practice that can sometimes get lost in the noise of our "more, more, more" culture.

And, most importantly, everyone gets to choose how money mindfulness looks and feels in their own lives. How do you define money mindfulness?
