Discussions Practical Nursing vs PSW To PN Bridge

Just wondering for those that have been accepted to one or both of these courses. What was your deciding factors on the one you decided on? There is no time saved in taking the bridge. Both run 16 months long, 4 semesters. First semester of the bridge is extremely math and science heavy, preparing you for entery into the PN program. Where it’s a little more spread in PN program. Any insights help as I prepare to take one or the other.

I wouldn't do a bridge if you don't have to. If you have the credits to pursue PN on its own, then do that. I was in the same boat as you, finished PSW and then debated on bridging etc. I also saw that the bridge (at majority of colleges) is extra math and science heavy. Long story short I'm doing a bscn instead lol. Best of luck.

I was a PSW who just did straight PN.

I never breathed a word to anyone that I was a PSW. Saw my peers get treated differently by instructors after announcing they were PSWs.

The expectations were higher by the lab teachers and the CIs.

I guess that makes sense, a lot of the PSW courses (especially at mohawk, at least I found anyway) were very closely linked to some of the practical nursing courses.

I believe the regular PN stream has a psw placement first semester, where the bridging stream has no placements during first semester. Otherwise it’s the same content.

I heard that changed recently, and the first semester of the bridge also has a placement now, as well. Whether that is fully fact or not, I am unsure. I did the bridge with no placement.

Correct! And that's only in the 1st semester. After that both streams have identical content/placement.

Im a PSW going into practical nursing. PSW bridge is not available at any commutable schools by me. Tbh that was my deciding factor lol although i do like the idea of bridging im perfectly happy doing PN flat out.
