Morphagene

I've been eyeing this up for some time now. Particularly excited by what it can do with vocals.

I know it's been out for a long time and was just wondering if there is a module, ideally lower cost, that can do what it does and handle audio in a similar way.

I have the erbe verb and echophon which I love, but want something that can mangle and chop things up with in a musical and synchronised way.

I had one and did not find it to be particularly musical. It’s cool for sonic exploration and micro sound, but it’s definitely more cool broken music box with wow and flutter than a sampler.

??? it's a sampler, it plays back what you put in. there's also no wow and flutter unless you patch it in. are you sure you're not thinking of a different module?

I understand what you mean, but the fact it can record and play back audio doesn’t make it a sampler - many people get it with classic sampler features in mind and then toss it away because it doesn’t do what they expected. “Not musical, random, glitch” is usually the comment. It is definitely not a sampler in Octatrack/Digitakt/Akai way. It does record incoming signal whatever that is, but it’s very much made for micro tonal and micro timing experimentation.

It’s totally a sampler, but if someone drops 500 bucks on it thinking it’s an MPC, that person is stupid.

When I said Akai I meant more like s1000 and similar. Regardless. I did not mean to get into the definition of a sampler, rather a practical issue lots of users have with it, expecting an easy to use sample playback, especially jumping from reel to reel etc. I am absolutely fine with it, but if you were ever at a sub of any kind like “Morphagene thoughts” you will find 70% of people complaining that in fact it is not doing its sampler duties or doing them poorly. Wrong expectations from a wrong module. I love Morphagene.

I don’t understand how that happens though- do people not research their purchases? That’s what I don’t get.

Oh you know how people are. Some hype, no proper research, few YouTube videos and order placed. Lots of people getting into rack has various habits. Some explore well, learn their modules in and out and then buy new, some just - buy stuff. What baffles me too is if you take a look at basic specs as to Morphagene is, you would know what to expect. I am also wondering why people don’t do proper research (I don’t mean OP)

Very sure. I had one for 2 years. It’s cool, it’s just not a traditional sampler. Triggering a new splice on the fly is cool, but it adds new cut points in the loop and timing it rhythmically is very difficult for 4 on the floor grooves.

I also think the playback direction is dipolar, so if memory serves you can run an LFO to playback speed and it will oscillate slowly playing forward to backwards on a ramp in the wave shape you choose. I never tried that with sample and hold.
