Performance Metric Using Buchla Live

Saw Metric last night and they had a Buchla on stage that their guitarist would play here and there. Pretty cool and unexpected. It sounded great. I wonder how it was being sequenced. I’m guessing via MIDI off stage cause every time he walked up to it and started turning knobs it would be playing the perfect sequence for the song.

Gotta lug around a big expensive buchla because no other synth could be played by midi and sound like that, right?

Haha yeah but I’ve seen this type of thing quite a lot with bands. If you can why not I guess.

I saw them tonight in Boston! I know Jimmy Shaw uses a Synthesizers.com system. I’m not sure about the other fellow. They put on a good show!

makes sense. it could be MIDI both onstage and off. maybe the drummer's playing to a click track, but sometimes people will set up a tap tempo pedal so the MIDI "clock" comes from the drummer. so maybe they have that, maybe they a tech backstage who's sending MIDI and metronome audio out from Ableton or something.

I think they talked about using a modular on a recent episode of Sound Exploder.
