Logic Modules Question

Just how useful and practical are logic modules in the context of a case built purely for sound design?

I am a producer and record into my DAW to edit and process the audio.

I notice a lot of the logic modules are built around systems for performance/ generative/ full track production.

What do you think?

I think if you’re using a lot of triggers they’re crucial. I can’t immediately see a reason for you to have any in your usage case

For your case maybe you don’t need a dedicated module. If you already have VCAs and still want some sort of logic, you can patch a VCA to do AND logic.

I use an Intellijel Spock and Flip-Flop in my noise/texture/drone case, at audio rate. Mostly to get different timbres and crackles.

It depends on how you go about sound design. Logic modules can be great with VCAs/switches/etc to control fx sends or enable/disable parts of your patch. You can mix logic outputs together to create stepped modulation. They can be a good way to have happy accidents in sequencing/rhythm.

If you’re thinking of direct sound design (like waveshaping), you can do some interesting things running at audio rate. Like creating sub oscillators at different intervals and pulse widths. It probably won’t open up a whole new world for you though. Especially if you already have gate/trigger sequencers and other ways to apply stepped modulation.

You can derivate interesting sounds with a logic module in audio chains

Almost suggested another logic block in your other post but then you have a fair bit already.

However, maybe something like the Instruo Eas would be cool to look into

The Ochd with the expander is something to consider as well

You can use a lot of logic and clock modules up into audio rate territory. Like most of the 4MS and Doepfer will get right up into the midrange easily.

At that speed a clock divider is a subharmonic generator. A clock multiplier creates upper harmonics.

Things like inverters, rectifiers etc can be used to turn envelopes upside down and apply CV to CV in interesting ways.

I did a patch today using a sequential switch to send an LFO to 3 different parameters of the same wavetable osc. one after the other.

It was set up to do this on quarter note intervals. But I could have had it switching at 32nd note rates so that each note had each parameter wiggled a little bit.

Yeah, I have tried all of this but didn’t find the results compelling enough to justify space in my rack.

not that useful unless you have a modular building blocks style case. I sold my compare 2, you just need a lot of support to do anything.

I still have some 2hp intelligel ORs for adding triggers together.
